This is off topic but I disagree.  Juries are not presented with all the facts and are often swayed by emotion.  Lawyers play to those emotions all the time.

That is the nature of the adverseral system, it is about winning an argument, not discovering the struth.

Also, come to think of it, Obama isn't black.

He's just as black as he is white. If it's ok to refer to Obama as a black man, it should be ok to refer to him as a white man too, right?

Right??

Wrong. How he refers to himself is his choice and his decision alone: it's not up to you or anyone else to judge. Right?

I've noticed plenty of news articles that describe Michelle Obama as a "statuesque, beautiful African-American woman" but I don't think I've seen a single one that describes Sarah Palin as an "attractive Caucasian former beauty queen."

Perhaps that's because Palin isn't as attractive to journalists as Michelle Obama. The journalists, obviously, have good tastes. Do you feel personally injured by this aesthetic appreciation or something?

Seriously now, which many news articles are you referring to? I'd love to read them, having not come across them myself.

Real_Trouble -> RE: Racism = Treating Obama the exact same way Bush is treated? (10/25/2008 9:34:38 AM)

To be fair, there was also a segment on the Daily Show featuring elderly Jews from Florida watching the VP debate (I think it was entitled something like "Who Florida Will Accidentally Vote For in 2008"), and Michelle Obama was referred to as "a big horse", so I'd say it's not like people aren't being made fun of here.

I think the press actually does us a disservice with trying to be "objective", by which they mean "neutral", about things which you should not be "objective" about at times.  For instance, was objectivity a good thing regarding Nixon ordering people to commit felonies while he was the president?  No.  He was a slime ball who should have been fired.  Out of a cannon.  Possibly into the sun.

Point is, the news coverage here has been surprisingly fair, though unsurprisingly stupid, from my vantage point.  To that end, the fact that race hasn't been more of an issue is good, I think.

Or is it unamerican to actually pick a candidate based on their merits?

The reason it is racist when you refer to Obama is simply because if you say anything at all that isn't complementary about Obama it is racist. If you question his policies, you are a racist. If you question the fact that he won't say the pledge of alligence, you are racist.  If you say you are voting for someone else, you are a racist. If you don't believe he is the messiah, you are a racist. I am ready to bitch slap the next Shit for brains that tells me that I am racist because I don't want to work hard to take care of people that won't.

Sorry for my rant, I am just so sick of this crap. From my experience, most Obama supporters are like zombies, except they have no interest whatsoever in brains.  AND I SAID MOST, NOT ALL. so don't stsrt sending me hateful messages saying I am fat or stupid or whatever you rabid obamites do.

Who told you you were any of these things?

Owner59 -> RE: Racism = Treating Obama the exact same way Bush is treated? (10/25/2008 10:24:55 AM)

People were questioning Bush`s intelligence level. And for good reason.Anyone who can tell me of one smart thing the Bush has done and I`ll take that back.

The Barack monkey guy wasn`t questioning Obama`s intel.but making a racial slur.

Both insults and both using chimps, but not the same thing.

But I think you know that.

kittinSol -> RE: Racism = Treating Obama the exact same way Bush is treated? (10/25/2008 10:28:21 AM)

Basically, the OP is crying because she wants to be able to call Obama a monkey without people jumping down her throat for it.

Well personally, I think comparing GW to a monkey is a huge insult to monkeys everywhere.

The racist stuff, well I just want to turn the whole world skin pigment blind, so I ain't even gonna go there anymore.

I didn't see that at all. I saw it as a good post about how we've become so PC that we forget that before everything else, we're Americans.

I think so obsessively focusing on race is completely unproductive and that this country could spend the time we use playing the race card on other things...like the economy, or foreign policy, or energy conservation.

Aww we`ll just find other reasons and ways to hate each other.

Religion,1st world vs. 3rd,oil have-nots vs haves, the shape of a nose or even hating people who support a candidate.

Owner59 -> RE: Racism = Treating Obama the exact same way Bush is treated? (10/25/2008 10:40:17 AM)

"time we use playing the race card on other things"

Cool ,I`m waiting for the OP`s position paper on alt.energy, peace in the middle east and taxes.

As far as I can tell,Obama hasn`t been focused on race but on real-time, right-now issues.

Added, did you just agree with the OP and then say we are to focused on race  ? ! ? ? [8D]

Steponme73 -> RE: Racism = Treating Obama the exact same way Bush is treated? (10/25/2008 11:11:42 AM)

You can put the blame on the leftist media.  This helps their cause to elect "their" guy.  They are trying to brow beat the American public into believing there is a race issue, when there really isn't.  They want you to think that if you don't vote for Obama then you are a racist.  That is what media has come to....sad but true.

The only people who are obsessing over race in this election are those that wish there wasn't a black guy running for president - perversely, it's when they get called on their racism that they're the first to cry "you're playing the race card, snot fair"!!!

Are you trying to downplay the race issue? Because that's just offensive, sorry.

Good job there isnt a Jewish lesbian running is all I can think

Then we'd have to debate the viability of posters showing Die Eklige Judin and how they shouldnt be attributed to any historical circumstance and how anyone making such attributions must be a closet nazi stuck in the past

I don't know if it's possible to be truly "color blind" but it would be nice if we stopped focusing so much on it.

...ok, pop quiz. How many Black US presidents have there been? How many Caucasion?
How many CEO's of multinational companies are black? How many caucasion?
How many Supreme Court Justices have been black? How many Caucasion?
If those numbers are roughly equivilant then it is, indeed, time to be wholly colourblind.
If there is an imbalance, then racism is still alive in US society......albeit at a lower level nowadays than heretofore. To be colourblind in such a situation is to turn ones face away from an injustice.

Those who ask us to turn our face away from bigotry may need to re-evaluate that position.
