This is very simple, if not politically correct.  Having a different set of rules, standards, and expectations for particular groups, based on race, is racist.  It might be the opposite face of racism from the KKKlowns, but the idea that we must be extra sensitive is just as bad.

One standard.  If some now want to be offended about a goofy-eared (potential) president getting compared to a chimp, they shouldn't have set the bar so fucking low.

That's pretty much how I feel. I just wasn't raised to consider race an issue, and I've never understood why anyone would. I'm learning a lot from this thread, but not much that I like. The logic behind insisting that we have to take someone's race into consideration in order not to be racist is just beyond me.

Tulip, the sad truly sad part is they will never get it because they don't want to or they are racist and don't have the balls to admit it. I mean seriously, she supports Palin? Come on, when you say you pick that complete and utter moron over Barack Obama and is isn't racism, I just don't believe it.

For those of you that didn't realize the significance of "monkey" as a derogatory racist statement because it would never occur to you to be so vile....maybe you should see how the other half lives, and why it might make people like myself(  and if you're half black...nobody calls you white, trust me) a bit "uncomfortable" when people try to insinuate any relation to monkeys.  *rolls eyes...but not in the "Buckwheat" "Sambo" style so popular in the 30's*

Well, i know some people are very dedicated to their chosen parties....and race doesn't have much to do with it, to be fair.

Aynne88 -> RE: Racism = Treating Obama the exact same way Bush is treated? (10/25/2008 9:03:58 PM)

Well now all you black people, did you hear that? Elisabella has decreed not only do we as whites get to decide for Obama if he is white or black, but if we find her calling his appearance relating to a cartoon monkey as offensive we are in fact the racists. I think my corneas just burned out reading that post. Just wow....[8|]
She understands that it hurt your feelings when you were called monekys but let it go, just let it go.  All better now?

I've noticed plenty of news articles that describe Michelle Obama as a "statuesque, beautiful African-American woman" but I don't think I've seen a single one that describes Sarah Palin as an "attractive Caucasian former beauty queen."

Perhaps that's because Palin isn't as attractive to journalists as Michelle Obama. The journalists, obviously, have good tastes. Do you feel personally injured by this aesthetic appreciation or something?

Seriously now, which many news articles are you referring to? I'd love to read them, having not come across them myself.

Way to miss the point.

Lots of news articles reference Palin's attractiveness and the fact that she was a former beauty queen. Lots of news articles discussing Mrs. Obama say she is statuesque (nearly 6ft) and attractive.

The words to focus on were "African-American" and "Caucasian." I haven't seen a single article that points out Palin's race. I've seen quite a few articles, even those with accompanying pictures, that feel the need to point out that Mrs. Obama is either "black" or "African-American."

The question is, why?

Also for those of you who are saying it's OK to judge based on record but not on appearance, I would agree...except that's the very reason I included the "Bush or Chimp" link. The first paragraph for that site says "This is a little project I decided to start once I realized how much George W. Bush looks like a chimpanzee."

So he made a little project because a president LOOKS like a chimp, and it's fine.

But some other guy made a little project because a presidential candidate LOOKS like a cartoon monkey, and all of a sudden it's OMG HE ONLY THINKS THAT BCUZ HES RACIST! Because of course black men don't have individual features that distinguish them, and some of them look like a cartoon monkey's. Barack Obama has unique features and that's what the t-shirt was playing on.

I understand that there is a long legacy of calling black people "monkeys" but to be honest, it's a choice to carry on to that baggage. You can let the past burden you or you can make a conscious choice to LET IT GO. Mr. Obama is running for the Presidency of the US. That's a pretty important job, and a lot of people are going to judge you on what you do with it. And you know what, they might not want to tiptoe around certain words in fear of being considered racist.

He has big monkey ears and the same hairline and smile as a cartoon monkey. Not all black men look like that cartoon monkey. It's a distinct look, and the comparison is the fault of Mr. Obama's genetics (both his white ones and his black ones) that gave him those ears and features. And it's my personal opinion that if you see Mr. Obama as just a "black man" and not an individual man with individual features, then you're the one judging by race. For better or worse, that makes you racist.

Tulip generally I agree with that but when the extremes are so extreme, and yes, based on reading some of her prior posts, I made a judgment. I stand by it.  Sarah Palin is so ridiculous I can't even believe we have to discuss her, but only for ten more days!!!![:)] Victory is imminent.

There`s also guilt by omission.

Being a fair,un-biased person doesn`t excuse one from ignoring bigotry,racism or discrimination.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I imagine the recent episode by the Pittsburgh College Republican, making up a story about being sexually attacked ,robbed and mutilated by a black man Obama supporter went right over the head of most people.
Not black people,who know a long history of being accused and considered guilty of crimes they didn`t commit.
There was the mom who drowned her sons and told police a black man took them.
I also recall a guy in Boston who killed his pregnant wife(and shot himself) and told police a black man did it.The BPD pretty much suspended the law in searching for the non-existent black assailant.
Just because you`re not affected by prejudice or perpetrating it,doesn`t mean it doesn`t exist.Not by a long shot,as the sad and sorry College Republican has demonstrated.
The way FoxNews and the cons grabbed on to that story with such hunger was typical and scary at the same time.
The only bright side of the episode was that the Pittsburg PD didn`t automatically believe her.The backwards "B" on her face helped.
Apparently there was a survey done in which one question in was if race was a factor in the upcoming election. If recollection serves, mid 50% of whites say yes. Mid-low 80% of blacks said yes. Anyways, I cannot find it anymore but thought I'd share what I recalled for those who are titillated by such things.
        Then we have the Tawana Brawley's and Tenny Pierce's, on the flip side of the coin, O59.  As long as people will blindly insist they don't exist, or don't matter, we get nowhere.
Yeah, and they are not sure about charging her because they think that she is a nut who needs institutionalized care.
I thought that your party was for better health care?
Shouldn't she get it?
After all, she did carve into her own face, and the DMV IV says that is a mental illness.
Yup, it must be racism. After all why else would a pro-life capitalist with libertarian leanings refuse to vote for a pro-choice, pro-affirmative action socialist who believes in government sponsored wealth redistribution?
Are you fucking kidding me here?
Sure, I'm guessing Obama has a higher IQ than Palin. He's likely better educated. But they aren't running for MENSA membership here. Policies matter more than IQ in my opinion. I'd rather vote for the average intelligence guy who shares my values than the genius who supports everything I stand against.
And yes, by your post here, I do think that you have racist tendencies. You believe the only thing about Obama that people could possibly dislike is his skin color. FYI I would possibly if not likely vote for Colin Powell, and I would definitely vote for Larry Elder if he ever entered politics.
I seriously can't believe those words came out of your mouth. And you might be interested in knowing that Palin isn't running against Obama. McCain is running against Obama. I'm picking McCain over Obama, and Palin over Biden. Cuz, you know, Palin isn't running for the Presidency. Just thought you might like to know.
Thanks Elisabella,
As a degreed New England liberal in a relationship with a non-white, yay you for calling me a racist, you go! Seriosuly, you think I am fucking kidding you? Hardly. I have been politiacally active ( key word: active ) since 18 and I don't miss a vote whether it is for country Sherrif or The Potus. All one has to do is wander over to the Gor boards and read your posts, you don't like Obama and I have every single reason to wonder if it is not like so many other comments I have read over there, my favorite was Maahsatti's insistence on his "muslim" religion. Luckily the always fair Thadius called her out on that, but it is pretty apparent you are not going to vote for him, but wait, you cannot vote anyway correct? Aren't you an expat now? Or no, you moved but can send in an overseas ballot right? Doesn't matter, really. The brilliant kittensol who actually understands American and global politics better than most Americans can't vote in this election either and her opinions are always thought provoking.
So policy matters more? Do you like her creationist beliefs? That is a reassuring, a woman running
the country that has preachers praying to keep the witches away and believes Iraq is a mission from God. How about her having her house built for next to nothing by awarding a huge sports arena contract to the builder? Did you like hare strong arming the local sherrif's department and library as well? Or not being to name one fucking newspaper she reads? Or dragging her brood of children around at the taxpayer's expense to places they were not invited? Or not naming ONE McCain accomplishment when under pressure? Was Katie to mean to Sarah? Or is racism?
When her P to her VP is in his 70's and in poor health you are damn right I do not want a creationist anti-choice bimbo that thinks becasue she can see Russia and never had a passport until last year running my country. I had to deal with George fucking moron Bush for 8 years, and his old man before that, thank God Clinton cleaned that mess up and left this country in a glorious state of affairs, but oops, he got a blow job, how so puritanical and embarrassing this place can be, so now have people runnning around calling Obama a muslim, and questioning his patriotism because he won't wear a 99 cent piece of jingoistic lapel crap probably sold by walmart and made in taiwan.
Why is it so many want the "avergae intelligence guy" your words dear, as the leader of the this country? Haven't 8 years of C student alkie illiterate Bush taught us to well aim a bit higher? I want my leaders to not be Joe Six Pack, but brilliant, educated, free thinking, surrounding themselves with the best and brightest minds the country has to offer. If you want Miss Wasilla 1984 and an embittered confused old man, I wonder why. Joe Six Pack might be a great guy, so is Joe the Plumber probably, but I don't need them making foreign policy, although in all honesty, I bet they have a better grasp that Sarah Palin.
You would vote for Colin Powell? Well Elisabella you might want to know he endorses Obama too. After reading the hundreds of posts regarding Obama's church, his "muslim" heritage, his race, blah blah blah ad nauseum, yes I am suspect of anyone that can find McCain ( the new Bush, part 3) and Caribou ( I don't know what I read ) Barbie as a more viable choice, I wonder. Oh and yes, being in relationships with non caucausains, two to be exact, for my entire adult life I have seen the ugly face of racism disguised many many ways. Never have I been called one, but hey it made me giggle with my coffee.
Edited to go back to your comment educating me that "cuz like you know Palin isn't running for President".  Gee thanks Elisabella, cuz like, unlike Palin, I did not need to go to 5 different colleges to get my degree, so thanks, but I don't need political education from you. If however *you* have any questions, feel free to ask.
