I recently drove down the German autobahn at 110mph.

Whats the fastest you've ever driven a car? (NB not a motorbike, and being a passenger at high speed doesnt count)

I have a sort of rule to know how fast any car I have will go.  Ya know, just in case...

Had a '94 3/4-ton Suburban w/7.4l v-8. The speedo went to 110 but the engine shut down at 89 :(
Probably not a good idea to have 3 tons of steel, glass, and plastic barrelling along at 90mph...

Mommy Van 1.0 was a 2001 Dodge Grand Caravan.  On it's 1st trip home from Burning Man I got up to 110 and it just would go any faster.  Of course it was full of camping gear.

Mommy Van 2.0 is a 2005 Grand Caravan.  I've taken it to 110 then backed off.  It didn't have much more to give anyway.

The morning after I bought my gently-used '99 Sebring convertible I had to zip down to the office.  On the way home I was passed by a very sweet '71 Monte Carlo.  In order to get a 2nd look I topped out at 120.  The driver of the Chevy was a cop on his way from (or to?) work.  He just smiled and gave me a thumbs-up.

Anything over 85 is a bit of a rush, not only because it's pretty damned fast, but the price of the ticket is gonna really hurt!

I have a Dodge Stratus.  I've had it to 115, which was such a rush!  I need to drive the Northeast extension of the turnpike more often.  LOL

When I was much younger and a lot more stupid, back in the early '70s, I had a '66 Dodge Charger with a high performance 383.  The suspension was so stiff that it didn't even ride like a car until you were going at least 80.  One night I was following a friend home on the Interstate.  There was almost no other traffic than the two of us so I pulled up along side of him (he had a nearly new Buick Skylark with a 350) and we started "goosing" each other...stepping on the gas for a couple of seconds, then backing off a bit while the other did the same thing.  Before long we were going 115 and I later found out that was his top speed.  I stayed beside him for a ways and thought he was just quitting the game, so I floored the Charger.  In a very short time I found myself going 145, going uphill, and still accelerating!  At that point I decided I'd best back off since I had just put on two heavy treaded, recapped snow tires that afternoon and was afraid I'd throw a cap, which at that speed could be sheer dissaster.

OK, I may have to DQ myself, because I lived in Europe for a little over a decade-and-a-half, and, while there I have owned/driven many of what Americans consider high-performance cars (in no particular order):
BMW 323  - Fastest driven - 128mph
BMW 518 - Fastest Driven - 75mph (this was the "family" car.  never drove in this one w/o GF and/or her kids in it)
BMW 535 - Fastest Driven - 150mph-ish
BMW 735 - Fastest Driven - 145mph
BMW 2500 - Fastest Driven - 120mph (it was over 20 years old, when I bought it from a salvage yard and nursed it back to health)
Alfa Romeo Alfetta (Quadrifoglio) - Fastest Driven - 135 (not to shabby for a N/A 2.0L 16V DOHC 4-banger)
Porsche 924 - Fastest Driven - 135 (it was my "commuter-car" at the time)
Opel Calibra Turbo - Fastest Driven - 175mph!!!(280kph indicated)  2.0L, 16V, DOHC, Turbo-Charged, 6-speed, AWD 205P.S. wunderkar.  Bone-stock!  Daily-driver (bought it after the Porsche's engine caught fire).  Still the best car I've ever owned.  Including my current Audi A8, although the A8 is faster, and the top speed should be roughly equal (I've never puch the 8 to WOT, since it is a U.S.-spec car) based on power/weight calculations.

To answer your question, about 175mph, give or take, pretty much any time I wanted, from 1997 - 2000, then I came back to America

If I'm on open road like the turnpike, I usually do about 75-80.  I've never driven faster than 85 or so.  I don't have the balls for the autobahn, no way.

GT - absolutely no chance whatever of me ever getting on a motorbike, ever ever ever ever ever! If Al Quaeda were coming down the street and there was only a bike to leave on, I'd stay and take my chances etc etc I saw my dad and my brother get mangled on so many occasions, through no fault of theirs I'm afraid.

175mph? a new record!

I sympathise with the curtailment of your speedfreakish petrolheadery - getting back to UK and being restricted to 70mph was sooooo boring!
