I have no problem finding women who want to crawl into bed with me but finding ones who I want to talk to in the morning is a much more difficult proposition.  Finding ones I would want to be marooned on a desert island with?  Priceless!

gumshoe -> RE: Finding smart or well-read subs.. (11/18/2008 12:38:54 PM)

Define 'smart'. Some of the biggest idiots I've ever met had a university education.

Getting an education really means learning how to think; to be sceptical, not to jump to conclusions, to use logic to argue well and so on. Its proficiency is developed through its everyday practice in the real world.

Smart thinking is most effectively learned at the school of hard knocks, not the more cosy environment of a university.

Enough understanding of science that you can laugh at most Farside cartoons.

I think I love you.....

(in the purely platonic sense, as two intellects discoursing, with no disrespect to Master or BSB....blah, blah, blah, Ginger, blah, blah) [8|]

Osmosis, Amoebas!

I was once at the Smithsonian when they had a retrospective on Larson's work.  There are still some I don't get, which is why I said "most".  I am very grateful that BSB has a such a "smart" but more importantly such a good person as a friend.

LMAO! That was one of my favorites! I still say it on occasion and people look at me thinking I'm nuts (they're right, but for the wrong reason).

I love Farside... (and Kliban)

I don't suppose anyone knows how to go about this? With the brain being the biggest sex organ I do need someone I can talk with outside the bedroom as well.

Have you tried reading the adverts in the dating sections of broadsheet newspapers?  Readers of these newspapers will more than likely be able to hold their own, and don't assume they're not submissive on the grounds that they're not in the 'lifestyle'. The Guardian and Independent newspapers, no use to you of course seeing as you're the small matter of thousands of miles away, are furtile ground for hidden gems. Presumably you have something similar in the US.

Failing that, I'd try reading the boards and watching how a poster carries herself. I think you have more than enough to go at 'round these parts; the question is: are you smart enough for them?

SimplyMichael -> RE: Finding smart or well-read subs.. (11/19/2008 6:45:24 AM)

Sadly, the US has nothing that is the equivalent of the Guardian, in fact the Guardian breaks many US stories long before our so called "free press" pulls their head out of their ass and reports things  Sad but all too true.

LadyConstanze -> RE: Finding smart or well-read subs.. (11/19/2008 8:43:12 AM)

The NY Times isn't too bad (at least how I remember it), might be worth a try, after all he's not after breaking news

The OP  is Canadian so I would suggest the Toronto Star  ...not sure what papers would be similiar out of the Vancouver area

msgingerroot -> RE: Finding smart or well-read subs.. (11/22/2008 8:16:32 AM)

You also gotta remember that you're dealing with a sort of Venn diagram situation here. IE, of all potential partners there is a subset of ones that are well-read, and there is a subset of ones that share/complement your kinky inclinations, and a smaller group that are both. Each time you add a qualifier you reduce the number of candidates. So be patient.

Me, I'd much rather have a partner I related to intellectually than one who shared my kink. Fortunately by dint of patience and good fortune I did find both.

Agreed.... and basic social skills are a great indicator of a person whose intellect is in check with reality and the people around them.  How hard is it to know how and where to find like minded folks?

lovingpet

I've found the very smartest people (in general!) to be severely lacking in basic social skills, yet still fascinating to talk to.  I would think social skills would be much easier to instill in a submissive than intelligence, but I'm not a dominant, so perhaps I am wrong in this.

A good clue to if they have outside interests (not necessarily meaning intelligent or not), is that they are not on CollarMe 24/7.

OMG, maybe I don't have any outside interests...hehe

Well-read doesn't always mean smart. I've seen many English majors who read "everything they were supposed to" but had no clue what any of it meant.

That's because they make you read such dreadful stuff....War and Peace?   Seriously?  I read it but I've blocked it from my mind forever (at least I hope so).

eastcoastgal -> RE: Finding smart or well-read subs.. (12/12/2008 3:46:50 PM)

Look in med schools....we have to be masochistic to go thru with it!

bdaile -> RE: Finding smart or well-read subs.. (12/12/2008 8:13:14 PM)

[sm=ofcourse.gif] Um, talk to them??? LOL, I think that's pretty obvious! There are just as many intelligent subs as there are intelligent doms....wait, maybe that's not the best example [:D]

Seriously, have a conversation. Think of something interesting to say and ask for their input. It really isn't all that difficult.

LOL, i just got an image in my head of a woman dressed as the naughty school girl, chained to a desk, ordered to read "A Tale of Two Cities" !

That is hot and also my favorite classic!
