Ok, I work at Walmart and just got home from my day in hell. I do not consider myself a low life or a red neck. Just someone trying to make a living. I don't make that much, but that has no effect on how I treat people who come in shopping. Our store is not 24 hours. Our manage thought it would be a nice gesture to open the store at 3 am so people wouldnt have to stand out in the cold waiting to get in for the sale at 5. So much for good deeds. It comes down to people being greedy, selfish and showing no respect for others. We have no control over how much merchandise we receive. We got 4 of the blu-ray players that were on sale. People perched next to the wrapped areas where they were at. When the wrap was cut at 5 am, 2 grown men and a woman were fighting over these things. The employee who was cutting the wrap told the customers if they didn't stop acting like children, she was going to take the players away and give them to someone else. It is terrible that people act so childishly. Don't blame me for their stupidity just because Walmart gives me my paycheck.

If you were standing at the front of the line and the door opened, you would be pushed into the store by the hundreds behind you, therefore, being forced into the stampede. True, no one forced the people at the back of the line to stampede, but those in front, didn't have a chance or a choice. It's called forward inertia. Who is at fault? Those in the front of the line, or those who pushed them into the store? Even if the folks in front saw the man get trampled, would they have been able to stop to see if he was OK? Probably not. For the same reasons stated above.

Ok, more serious note: I bet any money that Wal-mart will NOT take responsability for any of this. They don't care about thier employees. Never have.. Never will. As long as THEY make a buck, they don't care. And by they, I don't mean the instore managers or anything like that, I mean Corperate.

However, I'm not placing blame on them so much in this case. I think that it is the people's fault that trampled the poor guy. I think that Anyone that stepped over him while He lay there dying should somehow get in some kind of trouble too. It's rediculous! I stoped going shopping on Black Friday. This is the first time in 4 years that I didn't have to go. And I'm soooo Thankful.. I was even doiing the snoopy dance. People are inconsiderate, and just down right don't care. And my ex was one of them. I hated that. I would rather do my shopping AFTER christmas. Things are cheaper, and there's less of a rush.

But I know that if this would have been my Sweets, SOMEONE wold be paying royally! I'd make sure of it.

Companies put a lot of money into experts that know how to get inside consumers' heads. Ultimately, each individual is responsible for their actions. Companies also have culpability when they just go too ever loving far. Don't be so naive as to think these folks don't know exactly the climate they are creating. There are a lot of folks who want to give their families a nice holiday, but are also short on cash. There is so much emotion attached to an empty tree, especially where children are involved. Add to that a bunch of folks that just want a bargain because it's there and it is a recipe for disaster. None of this excuses folks' behavior. It is, however, predictable and therefore must be accounted for and curbed.

There is also the matter of trying to figure out who was intentionally stomping the man, who was too negligent to notice what they were doing, and those who never wanted to step on him, but was caught in the wave just as much as he was (with lesser consequences, granted). There were innocent people involved even in the "mob". I certainally would like to think that I would not have to spend years in prison for being at the wrong place at the wrong time.

As someone with a family member or two that was at the mercy of such crowds as employeed just like this man, I am scared for them every single Black Friday because of all the insanity. One family member recounts stories of intentional understocking with a memo handed out prior to the day showing what is to be offered WHEN they run out of sale items, not if (most of these items are of lesser quality and cost more than the sale item). He recounts people raising fists to hit him because the item they wanted is gone (like it's his fault). He is also responsible for opening the doors and has nearly been trampled several times. I hate the people for being such vicious, bloodsucking demons. I also hate the company for putting him in harm's way like that every single year with the atrocity of it all mounting each time. I don't let ANYONE off the hook for something such as this. One day it could be a loved one of mine that is a victim to the corporate greed and mindless, ravenous consumer mob.

If you read throughout, you will see I have a great deal of respect, sympathy, and even empathy for the employees of such places. When I say Walmart, I mean the highest levels in the organizations and, yes, they do intentionally understock. You and your coworker and your managers have my deepest heartfelt sympathies. Have a bubble bath and a nice cocoa and get some rest sweetie!

Couldn't agree more. Wonder why it is so hard for people to connect "cheap Chinese shit" at Wallyworld with "ain't no jobs". Duh.
I just renewed my Costco membership. Damn good company.

Nobody is blaming you AngelGeena. I just think all stores should handle the way they do this better. Pass out numbers. I have seen only allowing 10 customers in a time. There are various ways to handle it.

It is the responsiblity of the people in the crowd but i think stores should try and do something safer to manage it (to the smallest degree that they can). I think stores shouldn't have this get there early or the deals are gone advertising. Nobody can handle a huge crowd safely as some have put in the comments to this thread (sports event) etc.

Do i shop at Wal Mart? Yes, i do and i have had very helpful people there. Kudos to them! Sadly, you get to see the worst in people such as fireman and police. The behaviors are shocking and I am sure you could tell us a story or two about the behaviors of others. I really feel bad for people in retail they really get the brunt of people's anger! There are others also as stated above and Nurses, Doctors and many others.

I was at Wally World this morning to get some tension headache meds .... they release the knots in my neck for some reason. Anyway, there were scads of rude people there but there were also polit, annoyed people like myself. Only once did I see anything that looked like it was going to be a problem and it involved some jerkoff blocking one of the aisles and trying to keep anyone from going around him.
And, I saw hotties, hoochies, toothless rednecks and milfs while I was there. I do wish that we had the alternative of a costco here. As Hippie says, "cheap chinese junk equals ain't no jobs."

Absolutely agreed.... Of course, then again, maybe a person who puts on their Walmart uniform is supposed to be accepting the risk of bodily harm and death in order to make a living........Don't think so!

Walmart had a Pre Black Friday sale for 20 laptops for $300 that nobody really knew about.

General Reply -

Both the store and the shoppers could end up in court whether civil or criminal. (I do not know the particulars of NY state.) At the very least a wrongful death suit and negligence charges are likely to be filed.

If a store attracts these kinds of crowds with their sales then management should hire security guards to maintain order and keep everyone from jumping their place in line.

I almost never go inside a mall between Thanksgiving and Christmas and have never thought that waiting in the freezing cold for the stores to open on Black Friday would be a fun way to spend a day.
