I find it interesting that it is the men who feel it isn't something to be concerned with.  How many of you have been raped?  We women... know how often one can be vulnerable and see things a bit differently I think.  For us it can be a reality... for you men... less likely once you are grown and haven't known such vulnerablities.

I think you are on to something here.

1 in 3 women will be raped at least once in their lifetime here in the US. Men simply do not think of that... it is not imprinted on them how easy they can become a victim. Men generally are not targeted for that.. so it is "no big deal" to them.

So yes women need to be safe out there, and not just run off with strangers. However this does not mean be a victim.. or be so afraid that you do not live your life.

Being careful is always smart.

I guess I'm one of those women in agreement with Domiguy.

One hears about dangers every single day in the news but that's because the media needs to hype up their stories or they won't have any news to report.

It's overhyped.

Even with what I have lived through and my brother... I do what I want to do.  I will not live in fear!  But... I live armed and dangerous! lol  You won't find me meeting someone in a motel that is for sure!  On my turff always...

And Mike... darlin... hehe... know the one you're with!  You would of course always be safe with me!  (Said the spider to the fly)

Not buying what you are selling here.

Zillions of people hook up. Few are killed.

There are zillions of kids in the U.S. ...Few are abducted.

Yeah, there are Ted Bundy's out there and yeah chicks like Natalie Holloway get offed everynow and again.

Big deal.  Crime is reported at such a rampant rate it seems that danger is lurking behind every door.  It's simply not true.  Murder rates are down.  And what is even more ridiculous is that the murder rate is actually the number of murders committed and is not weighed against population increases.

Of course if you are a black woman or a black child you really have very little to worry about...I can't recall ever  seeing a story in the national news about anyone black disappearing or being kidnapped. Therefore, I can only imagine that it never takes place.  Black people are so lucky.

Hook up, go on one night stands, fuck strangers (use protection).  The chances of it biting you in the ass to the point of your demise in almost nonexistant.

domiguy - I'd like to marry you and have your babies.

It's a scary world sometimes but mostly it's fun and life is for living, not for hiding.

Thing is, people who are in this life and are attacked are much less likely to be taken seriously by official type people.  I know of one incidence where a young woman was attacked, beaten, and raped in her apartment.  When the police arrived, they saw her play implements and their attitude changed.  Card carrying members of BDSM clubs are also at risk.
I am not saying Domiguy is wrong, in fact there are few incidents overall. I am saying though, you are a lot less likely to be taken seriously if you are found to be .............one of us.

It bears remembering, that a large number of women are raped by men they know, and thought they could trust because they know them.

Similarly with murder.

WHOA.  STOP.  Wait a minute.

Usually I'll just read people spout off on things they know nothing about and move on.  BUT:

1 in 3 women will be raped at least once in their lifetime here in the US.

I was not only a K-9 officer~ being a female officer I was sent on all of the domestic abuse, and rape calls. I also was a volunteer at the local womens crisis center.

I have seen enough rape vicitims to know we all should be careful. Dont give up your life.. but dont make bad choices.

I couldn't find my links... but I was thinking 2 out of 5, but couldn't remember if it was domestic abuse or sexual abuse or what.  I know it is high.  What is it... every seven seconds a woman is abused?  It's crazy.  I did years of research on all of this and now can't remember shit!

Yes there are serial rapists and serial killers out there. But the odds are much higher that you will be killed in a car crash then of falling victim to a stranger bad guy. So how many of you have given up ever again getting in a car even though the fatality rates are so high?

I thought so.

We don't think about death by automobile when we run out for a quart of milk despite the likelihood. We do overestimate the risk of meeting someone. And yes, I talked to him for a month online, met without a safe call, played on the second date and am still with him 6 years later. And we didn't cam nor did we see pictures of each other. Just talked a hell of a lot about everything under the sun.

Edit: to add stranger. Because as has been said, we are in more danger from people we know than those we don't.

So in fact the hysterical statistics you use are wrong.

The statistic is 1/3 American women will be sexually assaulted in their lifetimes.  NOT "raped".   You totally misstated that to make your point.

And the definition of "sexual assault" used in that study was "verbal or physical intimidation or harassment."   Also, by the way, the study was "predictive" in that it is prefaced "based on current (1998) trends..."

In fact, the accurate statistic is "Chances that an American woman will be the victim of a rape or an attempted rape in her lifetime: 1 in 12"   Harper's Weekly, quoting a US Dept. Of Justice study in 1998.

Now even 1/12 is unacceptable.  My point is not to minimize rape, but to tamp down deliberate or ignorant hysteria.   Make your arguments but please, don't lie.

E

And by the way, those of you who misuse statistics so freely (and some of you do it intentionally -- shame shame!  The rest should have paid attention in 8th grade math class):    51% of American women are raped in their homes.  Therefore, women should not be allowed to own homes.        Disprove this, please.

Actually the first paragraph said raped or sexually assaulted. 1 in 3.  So if somewhere else it defines it differently... okay.. but to say someone is lying wouldn't quite fit here.

Let's t past the rape issue...the orginal thought was how easy it would be for the Bundy types to blend into this group.

With the mantra of "Don't judge" anyone, it's all good and fetishes being so varied.... how would you know until it's too late?  That's what I'm getting at.  So perhaps we can discuss HOW we would know?  I do believe that we are far more vulnerable than the status quo.

There may not be a way to know.  My brother was quoted many times that Bonin seemed like a nice guy... just an every day kind of guy.  Another of his victims knew him because he shopped at the store he worked in and was very friendly with him... had known him for like a year and one day needed a ride home and there was Bonin offering it.  I do believe that Bundy was the same.
