I have had the black outs for many years.     I chalked it up to be part of the spinal cord injury.  4 disks.  Each disk goes to a motor function or organ.  Early on- it all made sense.

But these days it does not.  Mainly  because the pain is manageable.

225mg is the full dose.   I went down to 150.  when I seen that worked- I then slowly went down to 75.

Thats where I am at right now.   Even if I stay at 75 before dropping to 37.5, so be it.

With Chronic injuries- the body doesnt work the way it is supposed to.  In short- a person just has to get used to it.  The traditional medical establishment is good at some things. But not so good at other things.

I learned that to get anywhere with DRs- one has to see the right DR and ask the right questions and let DR know that I will participate in my treatment.

So maybe I went too fast from 150 to 75.    Based on the Psychiatrist being so disgusted when I was late- I cant really tell him, I want off of all meds.

Im not sure what to do.     Even still- all these meds are a chemical soup.  The least amount of them is 5.

In a way- I would rather be blacked out then endless DR visits.

When I get alarmed would be if I can function.   It is hard to put into words.  At 45, too, the body doesnt work as it did at age 20.  That is life.

Maybe I should not have asked.      When I asked the Dr about memory loss- he thought I should take vitamens.   Glunk.

Have you considered watching many episodes of that TV show, House, and trying to self-diagnose?

I love the show but it makes me cringe.  Those people always go through the grinder, so to speak.  But I guess that is reality.

Not seen the programme but any money all the people are rushing around busy busy and there are thousands of sq feet of windows in the hospital (light and bright). My local A+E is an ex military hospital  and grim isn't a worse enough word for it (dark and dingy). Plus the making you walk around the houses to get where you are going never gets a mention, it seems in those TV programmes all the departments you need are right beside the entrance?

I think most hospitals in the UK must suffer from sick building syndrome and with a bit more thought in their design who knows what the beneficial psychological effects on recovery they could have. Plus they are inherently too hard to clean, too many uneven surfaces.

Pa:

I guess the question you have to ask yourself is : How is all this self diagnosing and self medicating working for you ?
< call me Dr. Phil >

You pick something you *believe* it may be and work with an assumption. Then if that doesn't work, you look for another possibility and run with that. You'e not solving anything. You are making busy work.  I know from reading your other posts, that you will not get an accurate diagnosis and follow treatment, so I wouldn't waste my breath.

All I can tell you is that you are harming yourself. Period. It's not age, disc injury, water, nor'easters or any other voodoo. It's a problem within your body that needs examing. Perhaps one or some of those things are contributors, but they aren't the problem now. Damage has occured somewhere and now the body is harmed further. Due to neglect. yes, neglect. No, the body isn't what it was at 20 years old. But at 45, even with chronic injuries, it should be running a little smoother than yours is. Blackouts and what you describe are not a result of normal aging process.

If blackouts are preferable to correcting the problem then so be it. You have every right to determine your own health.

So i'm reading that you've basically decided to start weaning yourself off of the Effexor without the doctor's go-ahead. Just because he got mad at you for being late to an appointment?

90% or more of doctors are arrogant pricks with a God complex (like, ohh, all of the doctors i work with) but i mean, they are trained. We're not.

It just seems like you're playing a very dangerous game with your health because of your doctor pitching a fit about tardiness. If you don't like him, switch and get a second opinion and maybe third. But don't just keep adjusting your meds on your own because you decided that you didn't want to be on them.

Are you sure it's not a plot by the Illuminati to cause your blackouts with their orbital mind control lasers so they can steal your cache of gold and silver?  Have you tried asking Lyndon LaRouche or Jeff Rense what they think?  They seem to have all the answers.

Recurring blackouts and violent emesis are signs of serious problems.  It's got nothing to do with the food in your colon, the weather or who is playing 3rd base for the Toledo Mudhens.  Go to a doctor already.

Yep I have this alcohol imbalance in my brain, which leads to the lack of euphoria those with natural alcohol levels of the brain feel.

This reminds me of that film with Mel Gibson who drives a taxi cab and then finds out he is a government contract killer with suppressed memories.

i wonder if this is what everyone is referring to on another post about: "Have you ever noticed how other people's stupidity can make your head hurt?" i like one of those bumper cars stuck in the curve of the track where i just keep ramming up against it, mashing the pedal wanting to make some sort of headway with you about how imperative it is that you see someone about this, but still i remain stuck. Going nowhere.

*throws her arms up*

That's all the advice i got for now...of course it's also the advice of everyone else. i hope you will heed it. We don't want anything to happen to you but what you're doing now is just plain crazy, and irresponsible, and unsafe, and unhealthy. Jeeze, at least call an advice nurse or go to urgent care - though with the whole blackout and vomiting i'd recomment a taxi or someone driving you - and talk to them.

I read up on it- and KNOW it must be done slowly. Maybe I went to fast from 150 to 75.

If you went from taking 150 to taking 75 in one shot then yes you went too fast....which *could* be the reason you're feeling this way BUT only a doctor will know for sure. kazza knows you hate doctors but it's your best shot for dealing with this before it gets worse.

Effexor is the toughest SSRI to come off of. You need to call the doctor and find out how to safely taper off. I'd imagine you're doing it way too fast.

And if it's not that, get thee to a neurologist for a brain scan. The term TIA is coming to mind.

Effexor tough to kick? Ha! You should try skipping a single dose of Cymbalta!  Now that's a good time!  Nightmares, headaches, insane irritability.  Party central!

PA: Find yourself a REAL pshrynk.  The one you've been seeing is a douchebag.  And find a psychologist you can talk to about all the crap you've been through.  That will help more than you can imagine.  And treat yourself to a full massage once in a while.

In 20-some years I've had 6 different pshrynks but only 1 therapist.  I haven't always listened to her advice but she has always listened to me.

This really isn't something you can mess around with.  Don't let one dipshit with a degree screw things up for you.  This is important stuff.  Go find your homeonaturo healing mystic, but fer Dog's sake find a doc you can work with on the meds.

Best of luck to ya,

~Dave

PA, since you have multiple issues: your spine, ADD and a history of a depressive disorder I would recommend considering switching over to a neuropsychiatrist.

They would probably be able to direct you to the right professionals to find the source of your blackouts.

http://neurotraumaregistry.com/Index.cfm?file=neuropsychiatristdef.htm

http://www.ucomparehealthcare.com/drs/pennsylvania/neuropsychiatrists/

As for your grandmother not needing to be under a doctor's care.
She doesn't have the same symptoms as you do and if she did, I am sure you would hope she would see a doctor.
