If you had seen the rest of the programme you would understand why the judges must have thought "what now?" when she came on stage. There were some pretty awful acts that night on before her (a witch doing a dreadful "act" who cursed the judges when they rejected her and a 60 year old guy whose idea of "dancing like Gene Kelly was to raise his arms in the air and sway a bit, to name but 2). It is not a programme we watch at home but we were with my parents on Sunday and they had watched the programme the previous evening and suggested we watch it again.

It will be interesting to see how much Susan is changed before the next show. Will someone have "glammed" her up before then? But whatever, an absolutely stunning voice. Imagine keeping that hidden away for 47 years!

Oh, the things that happen to those who win something like America's Got Talent.  Winning a million dollars, as well as a show in Las Vegas, is surely something that will change an amateur performer's life forever.  At the beginning of this month, opera singer Neal E. Boyd was named the winner after a nationwide vote, and since then he has gone leaps and bounds.

The performer had a show last week at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, and it was a well-attended affair, with around 5,000 people paying to watch him.  Outside of shows, the Missouri native is talking with managers and record labels, pretty much leaving no time for himself.  He almost didn't make it, even, to ceremonies that his alma mater, Southeast Missouri State University, organized in his honor. “My schedule, and the new people in my life, the handlers, are really, are taking advantage of the moment, and it's important that they do, or it could all go away real quick, as quick as it came,” Boyd said.  Thankfully, he was given a chance to take a little breather and attend the said ceremony.  He said he was supposed to meet with a record label, but fortunately they gave him a week-long break so he can spend time with his family.

“This weekend I get to ... touch base again,” he said.  “I get to see Mom, I get to see my brother and his kids.  The main thing really was specifically to get back for SEMO's Homecoming.”

The speech communication graduate is slated to receive a Distinguished Service Award, an honor given to SEMO alumni who have made an impact in the region, and to the United States as a whole.  Boyd is intent to use the event to thank all those who supported him during his America's Got Talent run.  If possible, he'd even like to make a public appearance in his hometown, Sikeston. However, he won't be able to perform for them. As Boyd pointed out, contractual obligations prevent him from doing just that.

I wonder whether this had a positive influence on her voice? Carmelite nuns sound equally beautiful: perhaps the carnal touch of man isn't all that beneficial to a woman's vocal chords  ? Stay a virgin, Susan: tell Simon to fuck off, no matter how puppy-like his eyes get.

And that sigh?  It was like he was in heaven.  It was nice seeing him like that!  I'm not sure I have ever seen him respond like that. lol

So, I have to do it.  I have to be the cynical, downer Debbie.  She has a lovely voice.  Best voice I have ever heard?  Nope.  She pushed too hard on the high notes, went out of tune, forced her vibrato which annoys the fuck out of me, and created a massive amount of tension in her jaw, also pushing her out of tune.  I enjoyed her performance, and applaud her courage.  With some training I think she could be a terrific performer.  However, I wonder if the judges didn't do a disservice to her by not pointing out the flaws in her performance.  I think it says more that everyone thought she would suck, and when she didn't, they acted as if it were perfect just because she surprised them.  I think when the novelty wears off, she is going to face much criticism, and I feel bad for her for it. 

I'm for rooting for the underdog as much as the next guy.  I hope she goes far, and if she is the best, wins.  But, I don't think she should win just because she has a "nice" voice and is not a normal looking superstar.  As sad as it is, that show is not about talent.  It is about marketability.

It came as no surprise to me that everyone in the audience - and the judges - were all completely floored and stunned.  (edited to add:)Yes, it's about marketability - which is why people scoff when someone isn't Thin, Young, and Pretty - because that's what SELLS, and True TALENT be damned.
 
I've been involved in music my entire life.  I'm a bard even now.  And I know how she probably felt at being that well recieved After they heard her voice, especially following so many dark and scoffing looks Before she sang.  It's something that all of us have had to face who aren't considered one of the Pretty People, yet we still get on stage or in front of an audience.  I still face it every time I get up in front of an audience that has anyone in it who hasn't already heard me perform.
 
Susan's voice is stunning - and trust me, while it's not Exceptionally trained, I can tell she has had Some sort of training in her past.  Her breathing techniques are far too close to a professional level for her Not to have had Some sort of training - even if it was a public school music teacher when she was much younger, or a church choir director who gave her pointers.  She's got a well developed range that is significantly more expanded than what the average person is born with - and it's been well exercised by her, even if only in the privacy of her own home for her own enjoyment.  I can think of a few dozen pieces of music that I'd enjoy hearing her perform - most of which are not Easy pieces by any stretch of the imagination, but with what I've seen of her so far, would likely not present her with any significant difficulty.
