I love her too, today when I first saw the video I watched it 5 times, made the UMs watch it, put it on my facebook page and sent it to a 1/2 dozen friends!

I've never seen (or heard) anything like this in my entire 50 years.

This woman is a pure gift.

(I'm still stunned).

Me too...

there's one Aria in particular I'd like to hear her sing T_T Can't remember the name for the life of me, but I remember how it goes *sigh*

It *was* a truly good performance, especially given what type of one it was. Intense vocal training will do a lot to just make her better... but, really (especially if she starts singing more popular-style music), she doesn't need it to succeed with a voice like that... and I'd buy her CDs.

Considering I don't spend money on CDs anymore (I'd rather just pop up a youtube playlist)... well, that's saying something.

I wonder how those 'pretty' women at the beginning who were rolling their eyes at her felt after she began to sing!

(I really wish they had shown that girls face.)

~~

Isn't that just a story...wow. I love it....

Other posters have pointed out that Susan's performance wasn't perfect, and (somewhat to my relief) I'm not musically adept enough to know.

Yet I don't think perfection (or the lack of it) is the point. What moves me, and I suspect many others, is that Susan was singing for all of us--ordinary folks leading ordinary lives, not especially glamorous, trusting one's gift in the face of derision, wondering what it would be like to get that big break and nail it.

That's why I feel like sending her flowers.

Toward the end of The Bridge of San Luis Rey, there's moment when an esteemed abbess learns that a noblewoman she'd always looked down on was a brilliant writer:

Madre Maria dared not say aloud how great her astonishment was that such words (words that since then the whole world has murmured over with joy) could spring in the heart of [the noblewoman]. "Now learn," she commanded herself, "learn at last that anywhere you may expect grace."

Oh for crying out loud...  Can't somebody just say the obvious?  She's about as homely as they come, and in our society, we are so prejudiced against ugly people that the assumption is they can't be good for anything.

Not really my kind of music, and the whole vibrato thing is just annoying to me, but she did have a very nice voice.

I thought it was very moving and she has a wonderful and very powerful voice, but I don't think she's over the top fantastic.  She slipped out of key at least once that I could tell and the crowd was too loud to really be able to give it a good listen.

Everyone expected her to be a complete flop and to make a fool of herself, so even if she had been just mediocre it would have been a pleasant surprise and a moving moment.  I'm not saying she isn't very good,  and the whole thing brought me to tears too.  But I think the whole emotional aspect of the "unattractive old fool who overcame mockery and skepticism to take the crowd by their heartstrings" is making her seem better than she actually is on a technical level.

Imagine just hearing her on a recording, sight unseen, no crowd laughing at her first etc.  How phenominal would she seem then?  She's very good, she's not fanfuckintastic.

For crying out loud... we all know she's not Kathleen Ferrier. It's obvious that she's not the greatest singer on the surface of this earth. But as a piece of feel-good pop culture, it's cool, and she can carry a tune - which is more than can be said about the majority of the nimrods who go on these talent shows.

You should see my music collection.  For raw talent... the woman was amazing and has a strong voice that will be trained better.  Care to wager the odds of her income becoming very strong because of one performance? lol  That alone is talent.  To move people to such depths that you are spoken about all over the net and world... is also amazing.  Is she the best in the world... no... but she is up there in the whole picture.

Nice touch making a point by slamming others! lol  Welcome to the boards.

I checked out Eva Cassidy.  And wow.  I had never heard of her.  Without knowing who it was, I heard her sing Fields of Gold when Michelle Kwan skated to it at the (06??) Olympics.  I had never liked that song when Sting did it, but I fell in love with the Eva rendition and never knew who it was.  Beautiful stuff there.

Eva does or did a lot of renditions and goes from folk, pop to jazzy blues and hauntingly beautiful songs of all types.  I heard one song and had to search for the other's.  I didn't know of youtube back then.  Sometimes you will think she is going to take it slow and easy and then, bam... that voice goes right through you!

It just goes to show you that looks can be deceiving.
They thought because she wasn't "pretty" that she had no
talent, boy were they wrong. She has more talent than
all 3 of the judges put together.

I have to say that she's better than the majority of the nimrods who people pay to go see in concert. *smiles*
