There. Inform yoursel: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Political_correctness.

This extract from the intro: "Some commentators have argued that the term "political correctness" is a straw man used by conservatives in the 1990s in order to challenge leftist social change, especially with respect to issues of race, religion and gender." is particularly apt to your case :-) .

Yeah, some have argued that.  So what?

From the same article:

According to Andrews, using "inclusive" and "neutral" language is based upon the idea that "language represents thought, and may even control thought"; per the Sapir–Whorf hypothesis, a language's grammatical categories shape the speaker's ideas and actions, although Andrews says that moderate conceptions of the relation between language and thought are sufficient to support the "reasonable deduction" of "cultural change via linguistic change".

From this perspective, PC is clearly an attempt to shape people’s thoughts by forcing them to use or not use certain words, phrases, etc.  To which my response is:

FUCK POLITICAL CORRECTNESS!  FUCK ALL FORMS OF THOUGHT CONTROL!  LONG LIVE FREEDOM!

It late, I’m going to bed now.

Have a good night, sweetbuns.

Edited to add the smiley just in case anyone doesn't get the joke.

Not calling people racial slurs or retard or whatever is not political correctness.  It is simple civility born of decency.  Political correctness is ideological tyranny masquerading as civility.

What? You’re against Affirmative Action?  Then you are a racist and nobody should listen to you, so shut the fuck up!  Anybody else out there against Affirmative Action?  Then you better shut the fuck up too or we’ll smear you as a racist.

Janeane Garofalo’s calling everyone at the Tea Party Protests racists is an excellent example of Political Correctness.  The whole point of her tirade is to intimidate people whose viewpoints she doesn’t like into keeping their mouths shut.

Marc, well said.
Except for the Janeane Garofalo bit. She couldn't intimidate my fuckin' cat "Bubba."
"MeeeeeeeOWWWWWWWlickmybigtomcatnutsJaneane,ooooooooI'mreallyfuckingscaredofyourmarykayass, Meoooooow!"
I like it when they say the *magic woid*; "offensive"
"I find that very offensive!"
"Oh yeah, well I think your mother swallowed a better person the day before you were conceived!"
"Well I never!"
The Three Stooges used to throw pies at people like that.
Now the retards listen to them! Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha!

Indeed.  I've often wondered where some people get the notion that they have a right to go through life without ever being offended.

I love it.  I'm adding it to my list of favorite slams.  Another favorite of mine: "ten million sperm and you were the swiftest?"

Okay, now I really am going to bed.

Tops my list of books that everyone should read and occasionally re-read.

Don't sweat it.  As annoying as they can be at times, the world needs the Randall P. MacMurphy's of the world (another book on that list).  Who else is going to put bugs up the butts of all those Nurse Ratchets' out there?

Speaking of which, did Domiguy get booted again?  I haven't seen him around in a while.

(clipped)
Racial slurs have nothing to do with pc.  To put someone down over race, religion, or creed is to show your own ignorance and that you are a waste of oxygen that a human being could be breathing.   I do not suffer the use of such terms around me without letting the user know that he is lower than snail cum.

So maybe it's a matter of definitions.  To me, this is precisely the concern of good faith political correctness.  If you are aware that some words for a certain race are considered hateful and some are not, and you avoid the racial slurs and use the neutral words, you are being "Politically Correct."  Maybe it's the word "political," that makes everyone equate being PC with being hypocritical and disingenuous.  Because people in this thread keep talking about politically correct as synonymous with "fake," and politically incorrect as synonymous with genuine and candid.

Take this example:  Let's say, as continues to happen over time, a certain group of people who often experience discrimination, decide as a group that they prefer to be referred to by a certain term.  I don't know why that term, exactly; I don't have to know.  I don't lead their lives, I don't know their issues.  If that's what they prefer, and you just let me know, and don't beat me over the head for not knowing, why wouldn't I respect that?  I guess the anti-PC thing to do would be to proudly refuse to indulge their wishes.  As if I know better than they whether it makes any difference how people refer to them.  But that would be disrespectful and make me kind of a jerk, wouldn't it - if *not* being PC is more important to me than their feelings and experience.

I'm starting to wonder whether the anti-PC brigade belongs to an older generation. Are anti-PC peeps the same kind of individuals who were terrified that the Pill was going to bring about the destruction of the universe?

In short: is one anti-PC because one is a reactionary old fart  ? Give up your ages, people, it's for a survey. Let's tackle that one heads-on

True, but that's not how PC works.  It works in numbers.  All those people pointing fingers at you, hissing, and calling you racist, sexist, whatever... that's the power of PC.

Sounds like age-ism to me.  And for your information, the term is "chronologically endowed."

No, the term is statistical analysis - and I am glad that you agree with my premise that those that are anti PC tend to be of more advanced years. I can imagine that with one foot in the grave, societal change must be tough to envisage - most destabilising, isn't it  ?

You should have used  "chronologically gifted" instead of older.

Also "old fart"  ..now there's a PC term if I ever heard one.

That's the wonderful thing with political correctness. One can choose to be deliberately unPC: very useful in one's rhetorical arsenal.

If one believes in political correctness then chooses not to be, I wouldn't say that's a wonderful thing at all.
I'd say it's being quite hypocritical.

I prefer to not use any terms other than "man," "woman," ""lady," or "gentleman" when referring to other people.  I will occassionally fall back on asshat, fuktard, moron, douchebag, and a few others when they fit the situation.  I don't care if you prefer to be called "Martian American" or "Viking American."  You still fit in the category of human at our initial meeting and will be treated as such until YOU give me reason to treat you otherwise.  I don't have to use anyone's "special words" to treat them like a human.  Amazingly enough, being treated as a human being has never offended anyone that I have met.  In fact, it has earned me the honor from many I know as being "colorless."

Political correctness involves changing your way of speaking foe every  group that you are around.  You can watch how speech patternschange for pc people when they are addressing different groups.  That is the epitome of "fake."
If one speaks honestly and in a proper manner(as my mom and grandma taught me) speech patterns and terms need not change no matter who you are addressing.  It also makes it much more of a contrast when you turn on a deserving jerkoff and tell him that he is a sack of worm spit that needs to shut up and quit lowering the IQ of the room.

"PC" is taking the whole thing too far.  Good manners fall somewhere between the standards so many of you have layed out.  Political correctness is an extreme attempt to never offend anyone.  People who spend so much effort trying to not offend everyone around them will always come off as milksops.  People who strive to be "anti-PC" all the time will be seen as boorish and crude.  Those who know when to speak up and be rude and when to be respectful are usually seen as polite and pleasant to be around.  They are also considered to be more honest and upfront when it comes to first impressions.

Marc, it doesn't work at all with me.
Whenever they start that shit I just give it right back to them; "Hey! Asshole! I find that extremely *offensive* now knock it the fuck off!"
"What the hell's wrong with you anyway?" Are you Anally- Retentive or something?
Do you remember that scene from "The Sopranos" when Tony's driving his daughter up to Maine to check out a college and she asks him about "Italians" and the "Mafia?"
He says; "That's a fuckin' stereotype and it's "*offensive!" LOLOL
Then while they're up in Maine he spots a guy who's hiding out up there in the witness protection program and "Whacks" him! lol!

Having one`s patriotism or love/support of our troops questioned because you criticize president bush is also political correctness. And a deadly form at that.

Conservatives use the term as a code for liberal in order to avoid defending their ideas or shabby behavior.

And like with most intellectually lazy folks, hypocrisy, double standards and short memories are essential.
