A habit can be burka like. They are both dress like garments worn by religious orders. The small head covering habits are similar to the head scarfes and such to recognize hijab. The difference is in style and religion.

Here in the US there are many states that have laws against someone wearing a mask, or face covering that makes their features undistinguishable. I wonder how those laws would apply to this, or if the Constitution protects that? I know the KKK tried to use the Constitutional right of expression, but it was defeated, so they had to wear open face "hoods".

On this occasion the French are  not making the religious issue, so, no.

You're right though, Orion. If there's such a noise made about Islamic dress, Catholic nuns should be disrobed too. And Buddish monks, with their unquestionably suspicious long flowy orange robes  . Mustapha Kemal would send his sbires over to force the veils off the heads of Turkish women. Looks as though Sarkozy wants to send the CRS to do the same thing.

Sarkozy is not being hysterical, he's being French, I doubt the vast majority of the French will see this as hysterical either.

I'm French and I assure you that Sarkozy is a rabble-rouser. That's how he got elected. He is also a hysterical politician with a little man complex.

Point is ... he got elected. (He must have a very large "rabble" to "rouse") As to any psychological issues he may have, show proof?

France has a long history of intolerance with regards to its 'minorities'. It's very easy to appeal to a certain segment of the French population

And my point was ...he's being French. Thankyou for confirming that France has a long history of conducting it's affairs in this way (well before Sarkozy). I don't doubt it will continue to do likewise well after this law is tabled. The "certain segment" to which you refer ... possibly the majority of voters?

I have removed the word "Muslim" in quoting you because I have already twice indicated clearly that I do not see this as a religious issue ... I'm happy to debate the issues of female suppression and debasement that you choose to ignore but if you want a religious debate, you should seek it elsewhere.

Not really Orion, a Burka is a mans garment and a habit is not. (notice the total lack of religious content in this post before you respond)

You're on about the Burqa then? ... Which is a female garment.

No wonder we are getting crossed wires, linguistic difficulties?

Slightly different spelling, because of the language, but about the same. yes I know  burka is a man's garment from some military garb (Russian or something I believe), but the word is sometimes spelled the same for the Islamic garb for females.

edited to add: Even some dictionaries have both spellings in the definition:

bur·qa or bur·ka
play_w2("B0560950")

(brk)
n.
A loose, usually black or light blue robe that is worn by Muslim women, especially in Afghanistan, and that covers the body from head to toe.

Speak for yourself, I can't interpret that response so it's clear to me there's a language problem.

All I can find is US slang for "nothing" ???

Jonnie, man, your sense of humour has deserted you.

Hmmm .... not sure what about total lack of religious content means in the US ... seems to me that there's avoidance of the fact that the French culture and laws promote the inclusion of people there, Lets ignore that part of the debate and bang on about religion instead? ... err nope, not me, not one bit of Sarkozy's soapbox has a damned thing to do with religion in this case as far as I can see.

The man has been making oblique comments about Muslims for decades: it's part of his political spiel. I'm surprised you're not seeing where he's coming from (ie. trying to steal the NF's voters again).

Then again, since you probably (hopefully for you) don't understand French, you haven't had the misfortune of getting what he's saying live and direct.

Oh dear ... did someone operate the "infinite improbability drive" ? (The probability factor needs to be recalculated)

Nobody's taking the piss out of your sense of humour. But it's obvious that you need to regain it pronto  .
