The French state has form for being more enthusiastic than others when it comes to involvement in people's lives - from taxing revenue to the hilt during the 17th/18th centuries to this modern day manifestation of what amounts to the same principle.

It's no more than putting people in their place and the state imposing its authority - which when it comes to what people can or can't wear is tyrannical. The fact that some people may not understand or like Islamic culture isn't a good enough reason to infringe upon people's civil liberties.

I'm anti-religion so I agree with Sarkozy.
ALL outward or public displays of (any) religion should be banned. Churches, synogogues, mosques shouldn't even be allowed to have signs in front of their buildings.
If you look at the history of religions over the last 2,000 years they should be classified as *criminal organizatons.*
Wars, rapes, murders, wholesale theft, deceipt, prejudice, corruption, the Italian and Irish Mafias have nothing over them!
Even members of the Mafias go to the Catholic Church! I can just imagine their "prayers"; "Dear God, give me the strength to wack that no good fuck Guido for not paying the vig on his gambling tab for the LAST TWO FUCKIN' YEARS!!!" "In Jesus' name!"
"Dear God, Kevin here, please sanction the upcomming hit on Billy-that no good fuckin' RAT BASTARD- Kelliher." "He fuckin' deserves it!" "In Jesus' name!"
I could never figure out why the Pilgrims would want to bring that shit with them to this country after being fucked with by other religions in England.
"The opiate of the masses." (sic)

It's nothing to do with religion; it's about freedom of expression and the state imposing its will.

You're not so anti-government dictat after all then Popeye.

Isn't this also happening in this country ? I think it was in Wisconsin where a woman tried to get a photo taken for her drivers license wearing a burka. They refused, she sued and she lost. Cops have a right to see who is behind the veil...
