Due to many and extensive business travels I have been away from the boards for awhile and the "old Timer" posters know my threads are normally controversial and this one is sure to be.
In looking down the subject lists I see the absence of many regulars posters and a ton of new folks so this may be even more active than I anticipate.

In the past when Cyber comes up there is always alot of negative comments re; it not real, its fake; I need to touch skin etc, etc.
It is granted that there are many, most I suspect, that simply cannot get their mind to bend around the concept; but those that can are fortunate as a fill in until realtime can happen.

For my part when I mentor new folks coming into the path, I encouage it as a means of determining personality traits, sexual proclivities and a glimpse into real time with that other side of the slash.

What sayeth you pro or con and why?

I agree. While undoubtedly it's not "the same" and My urge to cyber has diminished with My uptake of real flesh experiences, it was still a good way to start, a way in which I safely worked out some of My limits as both Domme and sub, by mentally exploring things in a very vivid way. I also made mistakes as a Domme which were able to be worked out, rectified and I learned from them without physically harming anyone which was a good thing!

At the moment I have a sub male who is on the other side of the country whom I have met and played with in the flesh once, will probably do so again soon when We get there, but with whom I am enjoying a bit of online play. It fills the gap, imperfectly perhaps, but better than nothing. And I recall some very deep, intimate moments in cyber where the feelings were quite overwhelming, perhaps even moreso being entirely mental without the flesh getting in the way. (You know, the aching joint that nags you and gets in the way of entirely floating off into space).

So I don't knock cyber, but I do encourage folks to move into meatlife from it eventually, don't get locked behind the computer screen and never come out.

I agree with you, CP, regarding using it as a preliminary to RL.  Just make sure that they turn off the puter and get to RL.

As I have discussed before, my introduction to all of this began in a sex chat room while I was exploring other areas of my sexuality (really in a more academic sense honestly).  As I ran into new things, I explored them further through research and some self experimentation.  I soon got the reputation of being a person that everyone wanted to play with, but no one really felt able to handle.  I was moving in a different direction than many on the site and eventually, as real time took over, I slipped away from the heavy online play.

It was fun while it lasted and I learned a lot.  I tended to attract, as I do here, pretty intensive and real down to earth people.  I was able to explore things mentally that I probably would have never entertained at all if presented with them in real time and grew to have a fondness for them.  I think it has had a permanent effect on my limits and allows me an avenue to explore things that scare me or that I don't understand.  I also got to witness the rise and fall of many relationships as well as watch the overall patterns of several different people.  I learned a lot about what works and what doesn't.  I learned what value I placed on such relationships and symbols such as collars.  I never accepted one in all my time there (close to two years).  I still haven't been collared real time either, though that time may be drawing to a close now.

I still say I will take flesh and blood over words on a screen any day, but there was a certain level of emotional and mental connection that I really did enjoy.  It is something that I now utilize because my partners and I cannot see each other with the frequency we would like.  Still we are able to grow and bond through the use of lengthy and emotionally heavy scenes online.  I think we learn a great deal about each other in these senarios and it allows us to take the time to really focus on all the internal workings that happen.  It makes my reactions in real time less surprising and more managable.

All in all, I don't think there is anything inherently wrong with cyber.  I will not say one relationship is superior over another.  It depends on the purpose of it.  I will say that my preference is for face to face real time.  I prefer cyber with one that I have that real time with and as something to look forward to.  I would encourage those that do purely cyber to consider coming out from behind the computer at some point and getting to know what it is like real time.  I understand that there are some circumstances that make it not possible for some.  Still, I remember what it was to have wanted and fantasized for so long online and then to finally get to experience for real.  It was simply amazing!

People can be down on cyber if they choose. It got Carol and I to where we are now. So I'm personally pretty happy with it.

When I first got on the internet (1996), my ex- was in Japan for a year and we were not active in other relationships during that time, so no nookie for either of us.
I was quite the cyber slut during that timeframe, spending hours chatting (Sometimes carrying on 4 and 5 conversations at a time; only messed up once, lol!).  Imo, it's interactive masturbation.
I also, at a later time, was involved in a relationship with a long-term friend.  We were hundreds of miles apart and cybering was a part of our interaction.  What he and I did was nothing like the random cybering of my first ventures onto the 'net; because of our context and the feelings and the knowledge for and about one another, we had some exquisite cyber interludes.
The 2 types I noted above, imo, very different: one with no 'meat' or substnace, the other utilizing science to diminish the miles between loved ones.  :>

Oddly enough, from our talks last week, MP is now encouraging cyber for our love life.  I just haven't found someone to participate in the practice the turns Me on.

For me, it's all about the personal relationship, and that means being together physically. Unless a cyber interaction is just a stage in a relationship, a step along the path toward coming together in real life, it can never be more than a friendship to me.

I cannot and do not do cyber without the physical relationship there. I'll flirt with my boy about clothespins on his balls as we talk online, but I know that Wednesday morning at 10 am he'll be here to make it happen. Otherwise, it's me making the mental effort and a sub wanking. Not fun.

i had a cyber-relationship for a little while that was very intense and it ended suddenly.  i was crushed & i said never again.  Now Sir and i do IM, but only because Wwe also have a realtime relationship where i know i will see Him in Person every weekend.  Without the realtime relationship i would never have a cyber-relationship again.  Mind you, it doesn't include cyber-sex but it does include a lot of flirting, "talking" (typing) about anything & everything, and teasing.

There's only a difference when we make the difference the main concern.
So i'm getting to know someone in another continent at the moment. Yahoo is more convenient than an eleven hour flight. He'll taste the same no matter how i het to know him first.

Imo the idea of using cyber as a means for "newbies" to get some kind of "glimpse" is setting them up for false expectations.

Getting to know someone online is great. You can find out initial base information about them such as their likes and dislikes but to use it as a setup for realtime imo is going to find them disappointed or shocked when they finally meet someone for real life.

MaamJay,

Very well said and your clearly one of those that can in fact allow your mental abilities to to make the substitution until the opportunities arrrives to put into action what has been presented screen wise.
Thanks for your input.

DS,

And for some it will never leave the screen due to circumstances of life ..... Last year I mentored afem that is/was locked into a emotionless marriage, I do not get into who is at fault and just deal with what it is.
She could not end the marriage but her mind was screaming for attention. She found it on the screen and last time she said hi, all was well with her having found a "D" that could handle her restrictions so all way well.

Thanks for your thoughts DS.

Prinsexx,

Hell yes it is an "old timers" questions and also a new timer question as so much emphasis is placed on immediate meet, breet, and beat that it mode is under used in my opinion.
