Sanity -> Biden: We 'Misread the Economy' (7/6/2009 6:45:01 AM)

Blames the economy on Bush - even though Congressional Democrats arguably share some portion of responsibility:

quote:

Big admission from Vice President Joe Biden today.

"The truth is, we and everyone else misread the economy," Biden told me during our exclusive "This Week" interview in Iraq.

Biden acknowledged administration officials were too optimistic earlier this year when they predicted the unemployment rate would peak at 8 percent as part of their effort to sell the stimulus package. The national unemployment rate has ballooned to 9.5 percent in June -- the worst in 26 years.

"The truth is, there was a misreading of just how bad an economy we inherited," said Biden, who is leading the administration's effort to implement it's $787 billion economic stimulus plan.

"Now, that doesn't -- I'm not -- it's now our responsibility. So the second question becomes, did the economic package we put in place, including the Recovery Act, is it the right package given the circumstances we're in? And we believe it is the right package given the circumstances we're in," he told me.
The vice president argued more time is needed for the stimulus to work.

I realize that this can't possibly be as urgent or as interesting as all the bashing Palin, but this is more, but still, Biden's charge that the current economy is all Bush's fault begs the question: What are you guys doing better than Bush did, Joe, so far as the economy is concerned?

For starters, recognizing there is a problem, recognizing they underestimated the scope of the problem, and taking responsibility for it, unlike this guy:

You have three auto companies serving the same US Market. Two have been managed into bankruptcy, one managed to avoid it. You decide to "invest" a few hundred million dollars into the problem - do you help the success or reward the failure?

Corollary question - you 'inherit' you family's business. You father's antiquated policies put the business on the brink. There's a policy in place attempting to prop up divisions that aren't serving the market and are causing the family business to bleed cash. The divisions used to be the family's biggest money makers and have a LOT of distant family basing their livelihood on them. Do you not only follow your dead father's policy of rewarding failure, or since you have total control and support, pull the plug and use the available resources somewhere else?

Okay - trick questions based upon the current results - but after you do so were you wrong or did you "misread"? Well, I guess you can also blame your dead father and get the religiously 'faith based' supporters to forget it was your decision, made while you had the power to make different ones, which brought us where we are today.

Don't "Misread" this post - there is no political party nor one politician who has the confidence or ability to say they were "wrong". I'm simply pointing out - no "CHANGE!".

I would saythat it is arguable:

Step 1 -- policies for the past several years have placed the U.S. in a structural mess

Step 2 -- to "solve" the problem, political opponents blame each other

Step 3 -- the public doesn't want to hear anything about the sacrifices that will be necessary to fix it

Consequence -- the economy is in a mess.

What's to misread?

As much as I appreciate all of your diligence and your unabashed enthusiasm for the task you have set for yourself.Namely being the number one poster in opposition to the new administration(in volume,if not relevance or content). Please point me to all the opposition threads you started pointing out the multitude of mistakes the Bush Administration made ,economically speaking during their 8 years in office.
As for the subject of the thread, please point out all the genius's who correctly "read" the economy...and predicted just how bad these employment numbers were going to be.
By the way if you have some extra time on your hands...while compiling the first extensive list of your Bush economic criticisms....perhaps you will tell us all how you stood in opposition to all of Bush's failed foreign policy decisions(chief amongst these the decision to go looking for WMD in Iraq)...I'll check back later for these oh so lengthy lists.

Do you enjoy the sound of crickets chirping? [:D]

At times....yes...at other times damm annoying. [:D]

Sanity -> RE: Biden: We 'Misread the Economy' (7/6/2009 10:57:16 AM)

What policies. I am assuming that you are suggesting that deficit spending is one policy which is to blame - and I would agree with that. So my question to you is, what is the current administration doing or planning to do to correct that?

No Sanity, first you prove your fair and balanced here....you point out how you have applied the same critical eye to the party on the right.....and than I will engage you in this discussion....Otherwise,this and all other threads started by you are nothing more than the ramblings and whining of one who's party has fell out of favor.
And before you try to turn this around...I have voted Republican and I have voted Democrat....I once even threw my vote away by Voting for a loon(Perot).

Want to hear "crickets chirping"?

Ask an Obamite how any of the current trends and Administration policies point to a positive result?

Specifically for anyone other than a public union employee, bureaucrat, or entitlement seeking failure that is.

Surprised that VP Biden pointed to the blame to a failed US educational system for the Administration's representation that they were incapable of reading. Maybe if their reading skills weren't encumbered by a PC based curriculum, their reading/comprehension skills would be capable of predicting the consequences of there direct actions.

I'm concerned - What are they going to do if no other celebrities die and/or no other Republican cheats on his wife or resigns from office. "They" being the, incorrectly labeled, news services who do their best not to report the failure to affect "CHANGE!" by this Adminsitration?

How about we....oh I don't know....just wait and see the result? I mean those on the right really shouldn't care if Obama's policies fail since so many came out months ago saying they HOPED he would fail. Let's forget of course that he *IS* the president now and if he fails, the country is worse off. No, we'll forget about that just like those who went on camera and said they hoped he failed.

As for what results Obama's policies are having or will have.....I've already begun seeing news pieces about things slowly turning around. This country ain't a sports car. It won't turn on a dime. But things are changing.

slvemike4u -> RE: Biden: We 'Misread the Economy' (7/6/2009 11:16:59 AM)

Well Merc given the propensity for cheating from heretofore moralistic Republicans and the actuarial certainty of celebrity deaths this is not a scenario the current Administration need fear.

mike,

Are you new here?

(1) I'm hardly the harsh critic of the current policies you describe. Send me THOSE threads.

(2) You somehow missed my 8 year criticism of Bush?

Or use your wait time to catch up on old threads.

I AM saying that neither politicians nor public want any taste of actually addressing our economic woes, and they haven't for years. Meanwhile the shit piles higher. Not rocket science.

And not gonna be fixed quickly, by ANY policy. We may even have to start taking **shudder** the long term view instead of the short term gain while ignoring the cost.

Think there's a mess now? Wait 'till those baby boomers--the majority of whom haven't saved--hit retirement and try to live off social security alone. Wait 'till they file their Medicaid claims. Where's that money coming from?

No worries, though. There'll be plenty of blame. That's what's important, it seems.
