Facing the Betrayers of Health Care Reform

While the majority of Americans have made it overwhelmingly clear to their representatives in Washington that they want a public option available to receive reliable health care benefits, the mighty Emperor Max Baucus, Sen. D-Montana, and his royal lords on the finance committee are finally releasing their plan to screw Americans out of their hope for genuine health care reform. Most who know Max Baucus are not surprised

Baucus has betrayed the public trust by taking huge sums of money from the Medical-Industrial Complex ($2,865,881). Other than corporate whore Arlen Specter who received a whopping $4,066,433 and two former presidential candidates, John Kerry ($8,163,141) and John McCain ($8,672,260), Max Baucus' battle to lead Blue Dog Democrats away from supporting health care reform is no longer just a secret among Washington insiders.

I agree with you 100% . I’m sick and tired of Republican games but I have to say it’s really astonishing what people will do for money. Harper is no better in Ottawa undermining Canadian healthcare.

I think eventually by the end of the year there will be a healthcare bill passed. I am very confident now. It looks like instead of being single-payer operated like Medicare, it looks like they’re going to set up some non-profit entity like a credit union or a government agency to do it instead.

It’s not easy, but somebody said anything worth having doesn’t come easy.

The media like to pretend that something's at stake when a big bill is being debated on the House or Senate floor, but the truth is that by then the game is typically already over. The real fight happens long before. And the lobbyists usually win.

5-to-3 Majority Supports The Idea Of A Public Or Government Health Plan To Compete With Private Insurance

Other polls have shown that attitudes to this proposal vary depending on the language used to describe it. Supporters are now calling it a "public option." Opponents usually call it a "government-run" plan. A new Harris Poll tries to bridge this language gap by asking the public about the proposal of a new "public, or government-sponsored, health plan." This poll finds that a modest 52% to 30% majority supports such a plan, and that the arguments in favor of it tend to generate more support than those against it.

So What?

Given that health care reform is being so hotly debated and is getting a great deal of media coverage, attitudes to this proposal for a public plan are likely to change. Furthermore, it is always possible that it may change, or even be dropped, as part of a compromise to achieve a bill that can be passed with a few Republican votes in Congress.

However, the 5-to-3 majority of the public in favor of a public plan suggests that it has the potential to help persuade some members of the public to support bills proposed by the Congress that include it.

Finance Committee Senators May Drop Employer Mandate, Public Plan

"After weeks of secretive talks, three Democrats and three Republicans on the Senate Finance Committee were edging closer to a compromise that excludes a requirement many congressional Democrats seek for large businesses to offer coverage to their workers. Nor would there be a provision for a government insurance option, despite Obama's support for such a plan, officials said."

Senate leaders "stressed that no agreement has been reached on a bipartisan measure, and said there is no guarantee of one, with numerous key issues remaining to be settled. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity, saying they were not authorized to discuss matters under private negotiations." They also said any resulting legislation would likely "provide for a nonprofit cooperative to sell insurance in competition with private industry, rather than giving the federal government a role in the marketplace. …

Have you heard about the six senators who are out to kill health care reform?

Of course, that's not how they'd phrase it. Sens. Baucus, Bingaman, Conrad, Enzi, Grassley and Snowe say they're striving for "bi-partisan compromise." But what they're actually doing is working to make sure reform won't include a public option or mandatory employer-based insurance - two key policies needed for effective reform.

There are 100 members of the Senate, but these six, inexplicably, seem to be holding all the cards when it comes to health care. So you probably won't be surprised to learn that all six have taken a huge amount of money from the health insurance industry and pharma. Take a look:

Yes, ram his bill through.  As the experts stated on Moyers' show. Obama's falling on the sword now for health care may mean that it will definitely pass in a workable form later.

I like that idea especially if everyone gets the  same health care system as congress as a matter of right.  I bet the fraudulent activities in the system would be found out quickly to fund the system.

Shona Holmes has become a central figure in the bitter debate about U.S. health-care reform.

The Waterdown, Ont., woman is featured in a TV ad telling her tale of horror – how she had a life-threatening brain tumour but would have had to wait months for treatment. So Ms. Holmes remortgaged her home and flew to the Mayo Clinic in Arizona for treatment, paying $97,000 cash for her care.

“Now, Washington wants to bring Canadian-style health care to the U.S.,” the narrator says gravely in the ad, paid for by Patients United Now, an offshoot of the Americans for Prosperity Foundation, a conservative group that promotes less government and lower taxes…………..

Ironically, for all her lauding of private insurance, someone like Ms. Holmes would find it virtually impossible to buy insurance, given her medical history.

The infamous ad claims that Canadians have long waits and are denied all manner of care because the “government says patients aren't worth it.”

On the contrary, medicare – universal state-financed health insurance – means everyone is worthy of care and entitled to care.

If nothing else, Ms. Holmes' foray into the U.S. health-care debate should remind us of how medicare, despite some shortcomings, is worth it.

Americans can only dream of having such a system to bemoan.

Well, yeah. No creditor can make you pay. The hospital can't make you pay. Your car dealer can't make you pay. Your plumber can't make you pay for unclogging your drain. It is true - none of them are allowed to take the law into their own hands. Hospital ER bills are NO different from any other bill in that respect. Subject to the same collection mechanisms as everybody else.

The only difference is that when you call a plumber the plumber is allowed to say "sorry" if he thinks that he won't be able to collect on his bill.




What part of "unable to pay" don't you understand? If you are unable to pay for emergency room services yhou dont have a bank account, a house etc. If you do, then you are able to pay and they should sue you for triple the amount for putting them through the hassle.

Actually willbuer you are making a rather large assumption here. It is entirely possible that somebody could indeed have a bank account and a house and yet be unable to pay for emergency room service. What about all those who are just barely managing to pay their mortgages? I can't get a simple estimate of what an average emergency room visit costs in the US, but the numbers I have seen run from around $300 to $3000 depending on what is done. It is very easy to be in such a tight budget that even $300 would be a hardship to cover, and very easy for $3000 to be out of reach (myself, there is no way I could pay off $3000 in less than a year). I will agree that if somebody has a job and a house, then they should be able to pay off a medical bill given enough time, however it really depends on the individual's situation and just how expensive the visit is.

Howard Dean, former doctor, governor and head of the Democratic National Committee, took a spin in the TV anchor chair last night as a guest host for Keith Olbermann on MSNBC's "Countdown."

In the first segment, Dean quizzed Rep. Chris Van Hollen of Maryland, a Democratic leader in the House, on the progress of health care reform. Dean peppered his questions with comments like, "I know the House is doing a great job on this" and "Voters were promised change they can believe in."
