can't relate much to xmas since 2004...for me its just another day at work...only part i miss on it is a certain food granny used to prepare for xmas (and i have never had her patience to do it...a potato receipt which takes ages)...reg materialism i dont quite know how my parents did it but neither my brother nor me were ever much into stuff.when my brother was in canada for a year at a pupil exchange she wanted to spoil him with a diesel jeans...that backfired as he used a black edding pen and a scissor to remove the signs of that brand...at present my nephew is not even a year and lives in another country so no wants there yet...enjoy being an aunty out of babysitter-reach :o) so no xmas here apart from a few pressies to friends. i enjoy more to celebrate nikolaus on 06/12 (have to use 7th this year though) on placement as i'm sure that many in my team won't know that :o)

just realised, never answered the question.

the way you are handling this is great. i did similar.

i also added in that santa only bought a couple of pressies due to time limits etc, and mum and family bought the rest.

(mum was occasionally not rolling in money!!!)

i took more notice of the things he's mentioned over the year, not what the TV ads etc were throwing at him.

And yes im horrible, 50% of everything bought was educational. didnt do the clothes thing though, as they are neccesities, not presents. unless a dress up costume for play.

I do remember my parents bringing us one year to a store and allowing us to each pick the one gift we wanted. I got a stuffed dog that must have been three feet long. He was my best friend for the next 10 years or so, even came to college with me.

It's amazing, the clothes thing. As a kid, clothes suck as gifts. But as an adult, the greatest gift in the world is a nice sweater or some socks. Especially socks. Just something no one thinks to buy, but, brand new socks are lovely. :)

I miss, last year and am going to miss this year, the little hand made ornaments my mom made every year. I never realized how wonderful they really were, and how much a part of christmas they had become over 30 some years.

That reminds me though, I need to get off my lazy ass and get to work on the quilt I've been wanting to make for christmas for someone. Laziness is a bane... >.<

For those on a realy tight budget.

The present my son gushed about most. I had a large cardboard box, painted it white, drew circles for the hob and cut appropriate sections and turned it into a cooker/oven. The plastic pots and pans were very cheap.

Ther said child is now 21 and loves cooking.

HAHAHA! Oh my god! When I was a kid, I LOVED the huge boxes, for like stoves and refrigerators and stuff. Those were the best! It was a fort, a house, a rocket, a cave, a space station, anything I wanted it to be.

God, now I know what I want for christmas! I want a refrigerator box!

My dad used to get them for us also. Aside from what you've mentioned, the big slabs of cardboard, when waxed really well with mom's canning wax, make GREAT sleds!
