As far as the main topic goes though, I grew up in a not exactly priveledged environment as well.  Now, I'm sure I had my times of "Oh I want, I want, I want.", but, I tried not to.  I understand quite well what Christmas is all about, both historically, mythologically and what it's all about in my mind.  I'm not going to get into all of that right here, because I don't feel like sounding preachy.  And I'm not even meaning in a religious manner.  "Religious" is not on the top 1000 list of words anyone would call me I don't think.

I will say, though, that I agree.  It's not about gifts, at least not the kind that can be bought and sold or even made.  It's about the gifts you can't necessarily put on a shelf, or often even truly see for the gifts that they really are.  And I seem to surround myself with people of a like mind, whether they're that way when we first meet, or if they sort of gravitate toward that during the season and being around me.  In the end, it all culminates to a wonderful and beautiful thing.  A deeper understanding of others, the world around us, what's truly important and finally, ourselves.  Hopefully, a deeper love for one another is the final result.

I think here in about 30 minutes... 430ish mountain I'm going to hop online and stream some xmas musics.  Not the normal stuff though, some fun, alternative stuff that most people probably haven't heard before.  I'll even end it up after about 9 hours with the audio from How The Grinch Stole Christmas (the animated version).  My stream address is in my journal, so, yeah... grab that and give a listen if y'all want. Or just ask. :)

Status: offline 		As far as presents went in our family...over the years...when we were younger, Christmas and our birthdays were the two times a year that we got something that we really, really wanted.  I got my stereo one year...top of the line for that time.  My sister, believe it or not, got the Weebles Tree House when she was 16!  Still has it too...with the box!  And there was always the inevitable socks and underwear, but I can remember how I loved getting clothes for Christmas!  But my best memories about Christmas was the day...getting together with all my cousins, aunts and uncles, getting to pig out on candy and goodies....all the black olives you could eat! Oh yeaaaaah!

When I had my son, I was a working single mom, didn't have a lot of money, but I always tried to do the same for him...get him the one thing he wanted.  Grandma and Grandpa, now.....OY!  My mom STILL goes hog wild at Christmas!  Of course, all the grandkids are grown now, but my one niece just had the first great grandbaby, so it's "LOOK OUT MASTERCARD!  Here we go again!"  I now give my son money at Christmas.....as does my mom for all the kids...it's just easier that way, everyone gets what they need or want, no having to return stuff.

But Christmas is even more now about getting together with the family.  I try to make it home every couple of years for it, because it's the one thing that I do miss about Christmas.  My son is the same way......we both HATE how the stores put all the Christmas stuff out in July....the whole commercial thing really SUCKS!  It's never been about the presents for either one of us.  Several years ago, all the adults agreed to a $20 limit on presents for each other, and we'd draw names for it on Thanksgiving, and the idea was to spend the money on the kids.  My mom's idea, actually.....of course, getting HER to adhere to the rule was next to impossible!  She just loves to see the kids faces when they open up presents.  Even now, she still sends me money every Christmas.......I don't cash the checks, and save the cards it comes in.  We've all tried to tell her it's not necessary.....I get more results talking to KB!

I learned long ago that the only present I want is the people I love being around me and seeing them smiling.  I have the same problem your mom has it seems, soul.  It's a great problem to have though.  I wouldn't trade it for the world.

Status: offline 		Speaking of which I'm stuck trying to get The Man something. I was wondering if he might find this funny. It's a hitch cover for the pick up. He's talked about getting it those mudflaps. Or they have one that says "git r done"

I like the family get togeather, and I like the way my mother keeps it stress free.  There is no freak out or guilt trips if people choose to have dinner somewhere else.  Cannot make it until later . . . no worries, there will be plenty!  No one is required to bring anything.  Well. . . I am required to bring Butterhead and the other half. . . but you know what I mean.  The kids get a day off from setting the table and doing the dishes (I LOVED that part growing up).  You want to watch TV, play a video game, read a book, take a nap. . . go for it.  Board games get brought out, multiple coversations go on, people can do as they please. 

I like watching people open their presents and seeing their happiness.  Or their laughter on some of the sillier things. 

There is the search for the pickle.  And then further searches for it! 

There is the looking at the new ornaments for the year. 

Friends are always welcome.

One of our traditions was the first present under the tree.  It was wrapped but had NO name on it.  It still gets placed under there.  The point was that if someone should show up, and there was NO gift for them, there it would be.  That way no one would ever be left out.  Before anyone else had a present under the tree, a person who had nothing would have their present under the tree.

And I love the tradition of the spare present.  One of ours around here is having teddy bears on the tree for decoration and for the exact same reason.  Because who doesn't love a teddy bear for christmas?

My thoughts on the issue even if I'm not a parent is that when they are of age explain the spirit of christmas to the child and what it means to your family. I would also instill that there are families and children out there that will have no christmas (homeless, abandoned, abused maybe not in those words but you get the idea) and in the spirit of things we should keep our wants small, but also we should pick out a gift at the store for a child ( of my child's age) that won't be having christmas. Since everyone usually gives toys for christmas to kids the other thing I thought about having my kids do (when I have them) is to go through old toys that they don't play with anymore and either A. get rid of those toys( donate them to a shelter etc) or to B. If they got 5 new toys for christmas then donate 5 old toys.

There is a pickle ornament on the tree.  On Christmas day, once everyone has arrived, my dad attaches money to the pickle.  Usually about 50 dollars.  The the pickle ornament is hidden some where on the tree.  And the search begins!

The person that finds the pickle, gets to keep the money.  However, they must put some of it back on the pickle for someone else to find.  Then they get to hide the pickle and the search can begin again.

And so it goes! 

In the end, everyone gets something.

It is a fun and games kind of thing. 

However, mini dill pickles are put out as snack stuff with the olives and fresh veggies!  I love mini-dill-pickles!
