The plan here is to tell the kid the story of why gifts are given to begin with...the three Wise Men came bearing one gift each for the Christ Child, and thus was the gift-giving tradition started. Therefore..the LoudOne can request three gifts only, one for each Wise Man. This is my way of keeping the "I wants" at bay and the meaning of the holiday in the forefront. It goes without saying he will receive a sleigh full of gifts, but the limit is on what he asks for.

Hi Holly
I havent read the whole thread, so I do not know if this has been covered.
I understand that it's general practice and heartwarming to explain the christian version of christmas, but is it correct to do so?  Would it not be more appropriate to explain the origins of Santa and leave out the whole wise man thing - which is only the commercial version of christmas?

In kinder folklore, Santas(Odins) presents were a barter gift for grain and fodder for Odins horse (which flying reindeer come from).  In less kinder folklore, naughty children were captured and taken away whilst good children were allowed to stay with their families.

For the more western approach, St Nicholas (who Santa is also based upon)was supposedly a kind man who help give gifts to the poor - and notorious for doing so 'secretly'.

My children have always understood that christmas isn't about getting anything, but by helping and giving to others.  And if they get something, then they should accept with grace and thanks.

I totally wanted to live on the Land of the Misfit Toys. I felt like (even as a kid) that I was a weirdo. I loved the polka dot elephant. And who wouldn't want a gun that shot jam? And frankly, Charlie in the Box. Come on! How could you NOT love the Land of the Misfit Toys.

Funny thing, that little show really taught me a lot. Or maybe I'm just immature.

I think that it, like the other specials I grew up with, were INTENDED to teach a lot.  They were far more profound than Barney pushing the green agenda.

Who could forget, The Year Without a Santa Claus, and the song about who Santa really is?
