Hmmm. . . you DO kinda look like Kris Kringle in that special that had the burghermeisters in it.  What was that called?

That would be "Santa Claus Is Coming To Town".  I love the old Rankin Bass specials.

I used to tell my daughter that Santas sleigh was only so big and he had lots of children to give gifts too. She would pick out 4 things and she knew Santa would bring what he could in his sleigh.

I was lucky my daughter never went running out of control up and down the aisles screaming like a banshee. But then again all I had to do was give her that "look" and she behaved herself, she knew Mommy had a paddle at home.

Thank my parents. Holly has the right idea. It is up to her to guide the LO's thinking and behaviour when it comes to christmas and gift giving and receiving.

The best thing that can be done, and she does this over and over, is to lead by example. "Things & Stuff" come and go. The important things stay with you, shape you, and influence you, and can never be taken away.

When we come to dark places in our lives, it will be these memories that will sustain us and make our lives and the lives of those we interact with better.

YAY Holly! You get the Kuddos!

I will say, though, that I agree. It's not about gifts, at least not the kind that can be bought and sold or even made. It's about the gifts you can't necessarily put on a shelf, or often even truly see for the gifts that they really are. And I seem to surround myself with people of a like mind, whether they're that way when we first meet, or if they sort of gravitate toward that during the season and being around me. In the end, it all culminates to a wonderful and beautiful thing. A deeper understanding of others, the world around us, what's truly important and finally, ourselves. Hopefully, a deeper love for one another is the final result.

Happy Holidays everyone, whatever you may celebrate, celebrate it with love.
well said, BK!!

so true. The things a child can create with a simple cardboard box...just amazing!! I love to just sit and listen to his chatter as he turns it into a spaceship, or a submarine...

One of our traditions was the first present under the tree. It was wrapped but had NO name on it. It still gets placed under there. The point was that if someone should show up, and there was NO gift for them, there it would be. That way no one would ever be left out. Before anyone else had a present under the tree, a person who had nothing would have their present under the tree.

When the boys were almost 5, in the middle of November i came across them circling TONS of stuff in ToysRus Catalog and i asked them what they were doing?  And they both looked at me in utter exasperation lol saying, that they wanted to pick out all the cool toys for the kids who didn't get any before everyone else got it.  We were always very big on toys for tots and angel trees and the boys were always helping me and their dad pick out stuff for those kids and people.  Come to find out from their dad, a couple days before they had asked him how much money they had "earned" doing their stuff  for their charity accounts (we set these up with their regular accounts and gave them an allowance in two parts -- half to them and half into their charity account for the charities we participated with and we usually put more money in there for them).

So yes we had the i wants not obnoxiously but hey they were kids and Christmas was an exciting time, they knew they wouldn't get everything on their list but importantly, their i wants to this day are usually I want to give before its the i want for myself.

I think its simply how you approach it and teach them what's important at Christmas.  While its fun getting presents, its even more fun helping those less fortunate kids and families. There were a few elderly people in our neighborhood who didn't have family who visited them or took care of them or their families were far away so families in our neighborhood would make sure they were taken care of throughout the year and part of the celebrations of holidays throughout the year and during Christmas, had their trees and help in decorating with friends etc. spent the days and such when we all celebrated etc.  The boys LOVED doing this and was usually the instigators lol or the "remembers" to get Mr. so and so or Ms So and so to come over to help bake cookies or for dinner etc, to help wrap pressies even to decorate our own tree and home.  So it was always nice knowing they would continue the tradition of taking care of those who didn't have anyone in our neighborhoods.

Much of what they learned was simply because they were PART of what we all did.  I don't remember actively telling them they can only ask for so much etc, because it just seemed their focus was more on others than themselves.  So maybe you can also simply put their focus on something other than their OWN presents and they learn the meaning of Christmas through being a part of what you do for others etc and your traditions.

angel
