How about we try mandatory classes for parents to learn how to keep guns securely away from children?

If stories like that one don't wake them up? No. Not good enough. We need to monitor people with children. It's not just guns. Kids die from all kinds of accidents in the home. A class on gun safety isn't enough. We need to make sure that our society's children are safe. If we don't, we are failing them by our inaction. Do I have your vote?

Heh. Actually, I think there's a lot of things people should learn in school that they don't, and that's probably the best place to cover home safety in general, weapons, poisons, fire hazards, everything, and I would support a requirement that those things be part of the curriculum. The problem I see with a mandatory gun safety course for parents is the government ending up with a record of damn near everybody who owns a gun.

Too, the overwhelming majority of people who own guns do know gun safety. That's why the rate of gun accidents is so low considering the number of guns in private hands in this country. Parents like the one's you've cited are candidates for a fucking Darwin Award. And like the poor, the incredibly stupid will always be with us.

Termyn8or -> RE: Defended my home (12/9/2009 11:47:40 PM)

Not enough yum. Let's put all the pregnant Women in an institution and control their diet and keep them away from drugs. Mother and child stay at the facility for five years after birth and Parenting is "assisted" by experts. Before leaving after that term the intended family home is inspected and must be devoid of any danger. That means using plastic silverware just like jail. There also must be an effective security system in place with bars on the windows and doors. All outside excursions must be approved by a board of counsellors.

At the entrances to the living area all visitors must present picture ID at the camera mounted near the entrances and will not gain admittance without a background check. The family is inspected daily to make sure they are properly nourished and cared for. Also, cameras are installed in every room with a high speed digital interface to the home office to make sure the guidelines are met at all times. The police stop by to strip search every visitor.

The Parents are stripped of all money and liquid assets and given a card with which they can only make approved purchases. Parents caught with regular currency or any unapproved form of credit will be incarcerated.

But then they already were. Sorry about your rights, there is something more important. We need able bodied soldiers in the future so this is for the good of all. As for the cost ? Just print more money. Gonna need it anyway with 120,000,000 more police and other officials. Plus it will probably cost 100 billion to have all the new regulations written, perhaps as few as 200,000 of them.

The final solution. ( where have I read those words before ? )

That would be included, of course. Along with the proper use of car seats, keeping medications and poisons out of children's reach, "kid proofing" one's home, bicycle and skateboard safety, proper food preparation, food allergy education, and all the other things that can be done to prevent accidental child fatalities. If you are really worried about kids, don't the things that kill FAR more of them than guns matter? Why not do it all in one fell swoop?

Maybe, not sure why, but what do you thinik might it have helped Orion?

As Lady Pact so succinctly pointed out - what he did seems to have  worked just fine.

Yes it did...except for the parents of the kid.

Butch

It is My personal opinion that the parents of the kid should be placing blame exactly where it belongs.  The 'kid' is 19 years old, which means he is an adult, and fully responsible for his own actions.  Even if there were outside influences encouraging him to break into a home (somewhere in this thread, someone mentioned it *may* have been a gang initiation) there wasn't a soul in that room but him and Orion when he was told to show his hands.  It would have been easy enough for him to do that.

Do I think those parents are grieving that their son has been wounded?  Yes, I do.  At the same time, as a parent Myself, I always taught Mine that they were responsible for their own actions, and those actions certainly can have cause and effect.

Thank you, LP! It always amazes me how an armed, legally adult criminal always winds up being a "kid" when whatever idiotic, illegal thing they are doing gets them hurt or killed. IMO, when you pick up a gun and break into someone's home to commit a crime, you've left "kidhood" behind for good.

NeedToUseYou -> RE: Defended my home (12/10/2009 12:18:56 AM)

ode to the immortal thread.

Oh, thread the wealth of knowledge you contain.
Yet, no end in sight of the mortal disdain.
We yapper, and yammer to no sure end.
The words, the words we must surely defend..

To hear one protest, I've nothing left to speak.
yet they return professing just for a peak.
In time their tongue control the hands.
A litany of words condemns their stand.

Another jumps forward with  sage advice.
Identical thoughts written surely will not suffice

So, Beautiful Glorious Thread live on!
You will exist well after I'm gone.
To be a word, in the book immortal
Is surely worth this mortal toil.

Caught that, did you? And here I thought it might have been too subtle. I'm sure there's a misogynistic comment to made here, but I don't want to lose my stunning subtlety.

I don't even know how to respond to that.

You are seriously trying to say that someone who leaves an unattended, loaded gun on a table and their 3 year old child blows a hole through his forehead with it  is "just another accident" comparable to falling off a bicycle or a skateboard?

kittinSol -> RE: Defended my home (12/10/2009 1:48:41 AM)

People that want guns lying around on the kitchen table should have their tubes tied (at their own expense, of course) [8|] .

The words "just another accident" are not in her post. She said "accidental child fatalities." And there's nothing said or implied about "falling off" anything, either. Do you pull this kind of crap deliberately, or do you have some kind of disability that we need to take into account?

Oh for God's sake!!!!!!!!!!!

Now we are going to break this down into semantic arguments?

You understood her meaning and you understood my meaning, so let's not play games.

If you you have a point then make it.

She neither said nor implied that a child shooting himself was in any way "comparable" to falling off a skateboard. Either your reading comprehension is seriously impaired, which I extend you the courtesy of doubting, or the question mark is rhetorical and you are deliberately misrepresenting what someone said in order to ridicule them. It's a nasty tactic, and people who use it share that quality.

Is that clear enough for you?

No.

This was in response to my link about a 3 year-old shooting himself with an unattended, loaded weapon placed carelessly on an end table.

So tell me again, how is there no implied connection or an implied defense of the actions that resulted in this child's death?

kittinSol -> RE: Defended my home (12/10/2009 2:41:04 AM)

Just like the death penalty, the fun of guns comes with a few minor inconveniences, such as the risk that innocents can die from them - anyway, if a child shoots himself accidentally, it's because he wasn't intelligent enough to handle the thing and he should die anyway. It's a jungle out there. Right? Right?
