Is this post a joke or a 1984 novel style rewrite of history? Exactly what "step downs" following 911, Katrina, the economy cratering or any of the multitude of miscues ended in an R "steppping down?" Perhaps the drugs are being introduced into the water system to induce amnesia and hallucinations... BTW, whose watch was it when 911 occurred? I think the R's should have learned how poorly the partisan blame game works for them considering the trash heap of a record they created. How about trying some grown up problem solving instead of pandering and enpouraging fear and divisiveness.

How about the GOP guys that cheated on their wives, to be met with "well, that's a family matter, so we're not going to respond, even though we're the "sanctity of marriage" party."  The only times I saw resignations demanded was if the man had a gay affair/encounter.

edited to add this about Trent Lott:

"The apology was not enough to keep Lott from being forced to resign his Senate leadership post, but he remained in office, and after winning his fourth term in 2006 he was elected Minority Whip by his Republican colleagues in the Senate.

In November 2007, less than a year into his six-year term in the Senate, Lott resigned his office, just in time to slip past new ethical rules that require a two-year wait after leaving the Senate before becoming a lobbyist."

Once again we see that Republicans have integrity, and when they fuck up, they step down...Unlike Democrats, who never even admit they fuck up, let alone resign because of it.

Like Newt, who resigned, or the Governor of SC? Newt resigned for the same shit Clinton got busted for, only he had the integrity to resign, unlike Clinton

Well, because it's hardly the same.

A black man who can speak stereotypically black. And?

Let's keep in mind, Muse, the comment that did Lott in was perceived to be racist.  We don't know exactly what ideas of Thurmond Trent had in mind when he said it was a shame they were never brought to fruition.  The racism was inferred.  Reid's comment is much less debateable.  A "negro dialect???"  C'mon.

I can understand about how realpolitik gets discussed when the doors are closed, but choosing to frame it in that sort of terminology says something about the man, and that something it is says is going to be roundly ignored by people who often pretend with great volume that they care about such things.

I don't think the dialect portion of Reid's statement was racist, (nor was Lott's). Many people have noted that Barry turns on the vernacular when he's addressing a predominantly black audience. the light skinned comment might be a little more borderline, but then again, its just a strategic political observation. Recognizing the role of race in an election is not racist in and of itself.

the only issue here, imo, is the Democrat double standard, but thats old news.

Btw--these were remarks made during the 2008 campaign.

Why is it just now suddenly an issue?

Republicans need issues, instead of having them.

It's hardly old news, Muse, and it's disingenous of you to pretend otherwise.  The book revealing the comment is just being released.  Would you take the same tack if this was a revelation about McCain refering to Obama by a racial slur during the campaign?

Newt hung out until the others of his party pressured him, for the good of the party, not the good of the country. Hard to get even the common street dooflus to accept your tought love on family values when you are sucking off people in the Minneapolis airport, all the while railing against homosexuality and trying to introduce legislation to outlaw some of it. Old gingrich did not go happy into that goodnight.

And when the Democratic Party Leaders call for Reid to resign, he will then be in exactly the same condition as all the buttplugers that resigned in the GOP.

Thanks for playing. You don't have equivalence in circumstance yet.

Ron

didnt McCain more than once characterize an erstwhile enemy in some rather rascist fashion, and when is he stepping down, after doing it even right up thru his presidentail run?

It's a funny thing, Ron.  I generally feel a mite discomforted when friends or aquantances use the "n" word, and I'll almost always say something to them in response.  The exception to that rule is an old co-worker who was shot in the head at point blank range by a black guy he thought was a friend.  He gets away with it.  I extend the same consideration to a guy who was tortured while imprisoned when it comes to the use of the "g" word.  Hell, I'm all encompassing with it.  Anybody who was waterboarded at Gitmo can call me whatever he wants, too.

So then Harry should have to resign his Senate leadership post and the senate dems can reward him for being a racist with the minority leadership if they ever lose the majority again while he is still in the senate. That would be equal treatment. Step down, Harry.

Obama has nominated so many ex-lobbyists that the lobbying rules are a joke anyway.

Sometimes I get the feeling people are just waiting for something...anything to be said, then despite how ignorant and uneducated it makes them look, they'll still point a finger.  There happens to be a very real term for "a negro dialect".  Its not even meant as a racist thing. Its just a.....thing. It's actually called AAVE.  The acronym stands for African American Vernacular English.  Or some may know it as Ebonics.  Its not an insult to a black person to be told he speaks that way, guys.  And to boot, Reid apologized for what isn't really a trait that is insulting to a black person.  To acknowledge it exists is just what it is.

"Many AAVE speakers contrast the variety with something they refer to as "Talking Proper". At the same time these same speakers may also express clearly positive attitudes towards AAVE on other occasions and may also remark on the inappropriateness of using standard English in certain situations. While the situation in this case is made more extreme by the context of racial and ethnic conflict, inequality and prejudice in the United States, it is not unique. Such ambivalent and multivalent attitudes towards nonstandard varieties of a language have been documented for a great many communities around the world and in the United States."

Really? You want to stick with that story?
Newt resigned over a shady book deal that was actually a campaign contribution.

He never admitted to cheating on his wife (while at the same time howling for Clinton's scalp) until years later, when he had nothing to step down from.

Newt resigned calling his colleagues (republicans) cannibals, he was pissed off at them voting to censure him for ethics violations, lying in his testimony, and subsequently turning over his shit to the IRS. But thanks for playing and for most of you---goddam, those were some great stories, I almost even knowing this, fuckin near half-believed a couple of you.

Yeah!  Like Mark Sanford!!  Perfect example of Republican integrity.  All that stepping down and stuff.  Oh?  He didn't step down?  Really?

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2009/06/24/sanford-was-harsh-critic_n_220325.html

More than anything else, Sanford -- after initially cautioning the press to withhold judgment until all the facts in the Clinton case were known -- became deeply skeptical of the president's motives. He was one of only five members of the House of Representatives (and one of two Republicans -- Ron Paul being the other) to vote against expressing support for U.S. troops in combat after Clinton ordered bombing raids in Iraq. Sanford reasoned that the president was trying to distract attention from his marital issues. And toward the end of the saga, he insisted that Clinton could not operate with any effectiveness because he'd been untruthful.
"The issue of lying is probably the biggest harm, if you will, to the system of Democratic government, representatives government, because it undermines trust," he told CNN. "And if you undermine trust in our system, you undermine everything."

If you follow the game, you had to know this was coming.

GOP Chief:  Reid should step down

A new book about the 2008 campaign is quoting Senator Harry Reid as saying of then candidate Obama, "no Negro dialect, unless he wanted to have one."

Anybody remember Senator Trent Lott being forced from his leadership position over a statement that wasn't nearly as directly racist?

Can we say "double standard?"

On ABC's Sunday show George Will was visibly agitated about the conversation about Reid's comments particularly as stated by Liz Cheney.  Suddenly he interupted them all holding the entire transcript asking what was really wrong with what Reid said.  He was particulaly mad  at Cheney and I wish I could have heard a side statement he made to her in that her head spun around.  Will was mad.  Those vomiting nonsense can join Cheney.  Reasonable men can join Will.

Someone also made the comment that Reid has carried the administration's water as a good trooper for so long that he will probably be allowed in the back door even if what he said was out of line

No, no no...you are thinking of Larry Craig, who was arrested while trying to pick up blowjobs in a toilet stall in the airport, and stepped down...

wait...he didn't either?

maybe it was David Vitter, who was busted having affairs with call girls and he stepped down- whats that? He returned to Congress and got a STANDING OVATION?

well, hells bells....who are we talking about then?
