Sorry, Rich--I don't have your super mind-reading powers.

I have to rely on logical possibilities. You could be right. Or the candidate could suck. Or both.

But not worth discussing when you already know every thought that hits your synapses is automatically perfection. It must be a great burden.

Humankind thanks you for your benevolence. I'll just have to muddle along on considering the possibilities until the day I too have superhuman powers.

Music, that too but it was a lot of things!

Apparently one of them was the Republicans weren't just sitting on their hands while Democrats figured they had it won already!

If the Democrats really want to tell themselves that this had nothing to do with their terrible health care bill and the arrogance of the Democratic Congress and of Barack Obama, holding secret meetings and making backroom deals with union lobbyists etc.,  I wouldn't mind at all.

Sigh.

Rich made a sweeping statement. I pointed out the candidate could have sucked.

If you like her, great. Sorry to offend. Or it could be as you state.

I'm slow. I like to draw causal links before I reach conclusions.

Back to your party.

The Obama administration will blame it on an ineffective candidate. Instead they should look in the mirror. They caused this loss. not Martha Coakley.

I think you guys are all reading this wrong. I think at the ground level there is a long-simmering resentment against the Washington establishment. I think this is what catapulted Obama into the White House based on his promise of Change and his appearance as an outsider and a reformer - not because of a sudden love for the Democratic Party but because of a rejection of "Washington insiders". Now that apparently that isn't going to pan out and it appears that the government is just running on "business as usual" that resentment is flaring back up again - and that is reflected in the election of Brown in Massachusetts - not because of a sudden fervor for Republicanism (however you want to define it) but as a rejection of the establishment - who are now mostly Democrats.

The bailouts, the favoritism shown to Wall Street insiders who contribute massive amounts to political campaigns, the drive to pass a healthcare bill which was massively unpopular against the wishes of their constituents are all coming together to keep the anti-establishment fever high. If the Republicans retake Congress and things continue with "business as usual", I expect people will finally start to seriously look for a new party - although if enough seats switch parties enough times, we'll have a Congress of entirely new faces in any event.

The party or the candidate who can actually deliver "change" instead of talking about it will probably be able to get a strangehold on the government for some time.

(Oh! And as a total aside - I find it fascinating that the Republicans have become the party of the "common man" and the Democrats have become the party of the "elite". Remarkable how things change.)

You could be right.

Did you find her a strong candidate yourself?

Obama's already blaming it on Bush, isn't he?

I'm sure they'll find a way to blame Bush for it too.

Wow. Just wow.
Coakley ran a horrible campaign, but still... states don't get more blue.  And Obama personally tried to help out.
The GOP will try to paint this as the country reacting to Obama and/or health care.  I suspect it is more of an anti-incumbent mood.

Obama tried to help in two other races recently. Both of those were losers, too.

The incumbent is dead.

Spin this however *you* wish DS but this is a staunchly liberal state that has not seen a GOP candidate win in the Senate since when... like 1972? It's a statement - just not the statement you want it to be. No "anti-incumbent" sentiment. They'd have elected Ted for another 30 years had he lived that long.

Finally some common sense from the electorate... and in all places MASSACHUSETTS! Who would have ever thought.

C'mon, Muse.  Don't make me get remedial on your ass.  I'm your campaign manager, remember?

We are looking at at over 50%, in crappy weather, in a single issue special election on the heels of a three-day weekend.  Granted, miss-spelling the name of your own state on a mailer is pretty fucking incompetent, but that doesn't motivate people like this.

And the margin of victory will keep the Dems from pulling any shenanigans. Good job Brown.

There are a lot of democrats shitting their pants tonight. Brown is gonna be like a rock star come mid term election time. Every GOP candiate in the country will be inviting him to campaign for them.

Congratulations, Massachusetts, for electing an irresponsible, homophobic, racist, reactionary, lying, ex-nude model, teabagging supporter of violence against women and politicians with whom he disagrees.

Winner's speech live now - he is a very high calibre candidate, absolutely no question. Coakley comes nowhere near. The better man won. Interesting speech though - "independent voters".

Since you lifted that word for word from Keith Obermann don't you think you should have given him credit?

They were both repugnant on multiple levels.  A person shouldn't have to choose a candidate based upon which one makes them want to vomit the least.

Well, now we'll find out if the democrats really have the balls to go all in and ram it through with reconciliation.

Never happen. There are so many rules surrounding reconciliation and all of the things that can be removed. Basically if it does not make money or spend money any language is fair game for the chopping block. Their only hope is for the House to approve the current Senate measure. And there are lots of Dems who don't like it and will be sacred shitless to vote for it after the election result tonight. In the end these people only look after themselves and their continued seat in their respective body of Congress.

Not always, but in this particular instance, that's about as accurate as you could get.
