thepillowdreamer -> asperger's epidemic on collarme? (2/28/2010 5:18:12 PM)

i've noticed that a lot of members of collarme exhibit very clear signs of asperger's syndrome.

asperger's is a mild variant of autism, which is basically a social development disorder. some of the symptoms include:
  • obsession with one or two topics. true love, the perfect slave/dom, whatever. ...  ~smiles~
  • paranoia and abominable victim complex.
  • self-obsession.
  • low self-esteem.
  • extreme terseness when communicating with others, along with difficulty communicating with others in general.
  • being so on the defensive that they are offensive.
  • flashes of irrational anger. (tantrums)
  • inability to engage in regular conversation: this goes back to the obsessions.
that's just the tip of the iceberg. head to google or open up a textbook if you want more info on the subject, but dang. i've been here for less than a week and this issue's been glaring at me since day one. these people aren't going to be fixed: medication helps, a lot, and will improve their quality of life, but i'd be shocked if anyone i'm thinking of would see a doctor for diagnosis.

it's one of those issues that everyone else but the victim sees, which is sad because they're going to stay miserable.

thoughts? am i alone in this?

Miserable? [8|]

You very might well be alone in that assumption.

By the way, you should heed your own advice. There is NO medication for Asperger syndrome. In fact, it's one of the only conditions for which there is no medical treatment whatsoever. :)

this shit hole is a psychiatrists wet dream. You want to research it, it's alive and well and running rampant here.

I'll have a better idea if you name names.

Lockit -> RE: asperger's epidemic on collarme? (2/28/2010 5:30:33 PM)

Thepillowdreamer, your picture is enough to cause some brain damage.

You know, I wouldn't so blatantly go around dx'ing people. I'm sure those in the know could come back at ya with a dx of their own. Nothing like spending a short time in a place and trying to determine what illness people may have and actually making that opinion public. Then of course we do have people we know who suffer from a number of things and I would hate to imagine what they might think of your post.

from what i've read of these people's posts, and the people i volunteer with who have this, they aren't very happy...

i could be wrong, totally. not claiming to be an expert: i've just been exposed to this offline and i'm seeing a correlation.

one of the men i used to be an aide for had asperger's and took antidepressants. when he was on his meds he improved by leaps and bounds, and this is coming from somebody who thinks that it's better treated by a combination of therapy and medication. antidepressants can be pretty dicey as far as results, but again, he did great with them.

he told me that his doctor gave him the pills for his asperger's, but he could've been lying. again, i'm not an expert: just throwing my opinion out there and wanting to hear others.

You don't see your posts as insulting? To diagnose and determine that 'they' are miserable, that they should be on meds etc seems really insulting and ignorant to me.

Apologies if I come across harshly but seriously.. I don't get the point of your OP at all.

haha, sorry about that. it doesn't bother me, but if it's an eyesore or causes headaches or something i'll change it.

and i do agree with your post. i shouldn't go around diagnosing people, especially since i have a clinical anxiety disorder. glass houses, and i gotta whole bag of rocks.

i'm not being specific and i'm not specifically trying to diagnose other people. i'm going by what i read, how people react, and get kinda bummed out that they might have this disorder and they're simultaneously painting themselves into a corner and getting bullied.

i am taking into account that this is the interwebs and a lot of people who are dicks on the net are great rl, and vice versa. everything with a grain of salt and all that, which is why i'm not trying to start a witch hunt.

the pillowdreamer...

First, I would like to say welcome to the forums.

I would agree with Lockit in that your choice in avatar pic is, for me, unsettling...I actually try to scroll down a bit when trying to read your posts (which I have been enjoying) because the flash-type pic causes a headache for me.

I would like to suggest you do a search using the term Asperger and read some of the many posts written about this.  It may help you to understand why your words may not be recieved the way you might want them to be.  In fact, you'll find much like the rest of society, this little slice of online life is full of people who have "issues".

i don't see how i'm being offensive or insulting, and i'm not diagnosing anyone.

what i am saying is that i see a lot of traits of this disorder and that there's people here who'd be happier having been diagnosed and given the tools to make them happier.

"miserable" is a strong word, and i shouldn't have used it if i knew it would trigger such strong emotion, but i do believe that "unhappy" or "discontent" still apply.

a little ignorant though, sure. i was wrong about pharmaceutical therapy. if i'm wrong about something, i'd rather be corrected and not be ignorant anymore than stay ignorant on the topic i started. and god knows i don't have much of a problem making an ass of myself, so why not let people right my misconceptions? ;)

you're coming off as a little harsh. not bitchy or anything - just a little harsh. the point of my post was, again, to get other people's opinion. i have a theory and want to air it out, i guess.

RedMagic1 -> RE: asperger's epidemic on collarme? (2/28/2010 6:04:25 PM)

I imagine every woman with a profile on this site would agree with a statement like, "Holy crap, there's a lot of men here with terrible online social skills, who are defensive as hell."  What I hear people expressing to you is a concern that you jump from that to a semi-diagnosis.  It's a little like saying, "That's so gay," if you don't like something, or "That's retarded," if you think something is silly.  You can expect that people with homosexuals or mentally disabled people in their families might bristle.

Overall, I think your posts have been awesome so far, and I don't think you "meant" anything by this thread.  Hopefully, other people will see that too -- though they may try to educate you anyway![;)]

You pussy. You caved to the likes of these ill people? Put back up your original avatar. Be the man....Who da man?...You da man!!!

camille65 -> RE: asperger's epidemic on collarme? (2/28/2010 6:07:16 PM)

tbd I don't think you meant it negatively either but that is how it came across to me. Sorry if I sounded harsh but I was having trouble switching tones between the forums I'm posting in tonight!

It sounded to me like you were basically saying 'Oh poor Aspies, all so very miserable in their little confused lives where they obsess day in/day out.. heya lets medicate them!!'. You likely didn't mean for that tone but that is how I read your OP.

Jeffff -> RE: asperger's epidemic on collarme? (2/28/2010 6:10:02 PM)

pyroaquatic started a thread about his asperger's syndrome a while back and he got great support: http://www.collarchat.com/m_3039321/tm.htm

And he is a delightful young man.

I would strongly suggest that you stop assuming that people are miserable. It says more about you than them.
