Are you for real Smutmonger ? What happened, did some nasty Christians send you a card or put  lights in their window. Or did a  marauding gang of Catholics kidnap you and take you to midnight mass ?

Give me a fucking break. I live in a condo. I have two Sri Lankan neighbors and three Indian neighbors, all Buddhist. They decorate their homes, patios and little garden areas with lights on  Visakah Puja.  On Duwali their patio and little yards are decorated with little lit up lanterns.

It's beautiful. I am a Christian, am I offended at their open display of their beliefs ? Hell no

Do you ever go to a chinese resturant ? next time you do.. take a good look around. Many have a little statue of Buddha, you will notice litle offerings of food all around him sometimes accompanied by bows. That is a Budhist Ritual to feed Buddha. I forget what it is called. Do you get offended seeing that when you are out having a bite of Chinese ?

I worked in a Kosher Jewish Hospital. Come Passover, the entire kitchen areas and cafeterias were changed around and the only food allowed was the Kosher Passover foods. Did I care ? Did I put up a stink that I couldn't get a slice of toast for breakfast ? Did the non Jewish patients ever whine and moan like you are doing ? No

One of my best friends is Sri Lankan and Buddhist. When my Dad died, she came to the wake and funeral in her traditional white mourning clothing and placed a little thing on his casket that was Buddhist. She asked me to wear a necklace that she had worn to her mothers funeral, a Buddhist symbol. I am a Christian, pretty devout one at that. I took absolutely no offense to it. It touched my heart actually.

You don't like Christmas or Easter ? If you can't tolerate people celebrating something that is special to them, then take a little vacation... or better yet.. get a grip and do some soul searching. What harm has come to you from a Nativity, a Christmas card or the flipping Easter Bunny at your local mall. What intrusion has it had on your life ? What horrendous ills have you suffered from visualizing symbols of religious holidays ?

God Bless !

Well mbmbn, I was once forced to attend Easter mass at the local catholic church. My brother's then girlfriend was catholic and down from Scotland for Easter, and no one else would go with her to a strange church in a strange town.

I was incensed.

I'm only worried about that in relation to the tiny proportion of Americans who have it in their power to bring down all holy shit on the world.

Yeah really, given the kind of God some of them believe in. But as far as that goes, fuck, why do we even call it a belief in God? They believe in the Bible. That's their "God".

The problem simply exists in realizing that you are a minority in the midst of a pervasive culture based almost entirely on popularity. I just find it interesting. And at christmas time,annoying-since there is no place to avoid it. No other religion is as "in your face" seasonally as Christianity.

Or as focused on recruiting.

I've had more than on christain drag me off to thier church on some flimsy pretext as well. I guess they thought that the "awesome spirit of fellowship" was going to mystically and miraculously convert me on the spot.

I seem to lack the god gene however-they found me rather cold and distant after that. I forgot about them.

Youre right in that they do seem to be everywhere! I dont know whether its just me though, whether I attract them or what? I wont be shooting any though, not only did that not work out well the first time round, I'd also be minus at least a dozen friends and acquaintances too.

Glad you got the joke; I came out of that church much the way I went in, in that I was half soaked in the first place, but I did smell like a new age shop too.

Nowt wrong with normal everyday catholics, they are just the same as every other, but the thing that is at the head of their church is a bit suspect, always was, and I suppose always will be, a law unto themselves, not so much God's law, but a law that allows them to do just what they want to do. In fact is the thing at the head of the catholic church worthy of it's followers. John Paul was ok, but this new guy, ex hitler youth, there is something creepy about him.

Like I said, get a grip. You are giving it the power to annoy you. Do the Minnorahs bother you too when you are in a Jewish area at Hannukah ?  How's about those nasty ole flags with Dreidels on them that line the streetlight poles of Jewish communities and hang outside the Temples at Hannakah ? Maybe I just live in a more diverse area than you, but I see an awful lot of public celebrations of religious holidays and I like it. I like the beauty of each celebration. I like learning what each thing means.

Or as focused on recruiting.

Just say no. Close the door in their face. Throw away any mailings you get. Do not respond to solicitive phone calls. Simple again.

I don't like telemarketers and they are much more pevasive and intrusive on my/your daily life than any Christain group might be. I hang up on them. Simple.

Ok, OK, my friend. In the interest of your financial security in these tough economic times, we won't shoot her. Just a warning shot: flesh wound to the leg. OK ? I'm trying to be a good Christian here. I hope you appreciate my efforts.

edited to add: Funny enough, except for my immediate family, the rest of them are Catholic. That's how I know about the marauding herds.

I dont feel I have the right to either approve or disaprove on how  their "god(insert favourite deity here)" comes into their lives.
Just dont be telling me I should be using said deity in mine.

Personally, I like what St Augustine had to say "Work like everything depends on you.  Pray like everything depends on God."

To sit back and think God is going to do everything or even to sit back and think The Government is going to do everything or even to sit back and think Someone Else is going to do everything is just a coward's approach to life, in my opinion.

Maybe this answers why we can't get anything done in this country.

After all, it's not really our responsibility.

My beliefs in God came later in life, so it’s not a case of having someone else shoving their beliefs down my throat and eventually accepting them.

I’ve had people trying to get me to follow their beliefs many times throughout my life, only a few of those had anything to do with a superior being; other then themselves.

Yesterday was the two year anniversary of my seeing ‘the city’. I could have been more logical and not listened to the urge I had to order takeout, since my usual stance on splurging is “No, we can’t afford it”, but then, I might have missed seeing the city. It wasn’t the only time in my life that listening to, out of the ordinary ‘urges’, has offered unlikely opportunities.

The belief that something ‘higher’ is guiding ones actions, is not a call for inaction, unless it is perceived that staying put is the course to take. God is not the only one/thing, people like to blame for their choices.

Wise man says; "If you are moving, and getting nowhere, perhaps you are running in circles".

Alright, actually, that was me; just now.

Kim

I do not know how I would answer those questions had I been polled...

I guess I would first ask the researchers "which "god" are they talking about....

I believe there is something larger than me "out there". I do not want to label it. If  we are created in the image of the creator, and we can create ourselves, this makes us "gods" of sorts... gods that are connected to each other and this larger thing that is "out there".

That being said, yeah, I kinda think that this "thing"that is out there, and that  we are all connected to can help us in our daily decision making. I believe that we get guidance from it. I believe it intervenes in our life, but only to the extent that we allow it to.

I also believe that I create my own reality... my belief system has this concept completely embedded within it. In all my thoughts and actions I am creating my reality every moment of every day

My issue with the opening post is the ridiculing of belief systems that you do not subscribe to...this comment....

...rather condescending and closed minded of you... you want tolerance from others and yet refuse to offer any of your own... not even an attempt to understand how other people believe or feel or how they interpret the world.. which says more about you than the content of their beliefs....

Hey though - she was pretty.....

More seriously, its the one and only time I've been in a church and it was full to bursting. Also the one and only time when what was going on was of any interest to me as a heathen observer. The protestant churches are empty and the services stripped bare, rendering them rather odd as a religious celebration of anything much, and more like mourning.

Most of them are indeed, relatively faithful. They just don't seem too bright. It seems odd that the creator of volcanoes and oceans would have a personal interest in the un-natural and destructive things we do the the planet he/she/it created.
Someone is broke and runs out of gas in the middle of nowhere. A $5 bill blows across their path, it was "god" that did it. Really?

You say this like it's something new. As far as I know it's been like that for a long time, and yet we have managed to get things done.
