This is good news BoiJen. Thanks for sharing it.

And I really wish people knew what they were talking about before saying asinine stuff about the Middle East. Seriously. It's like the watch 15 minutes on CNN while sitting in their all American Lay-z-Boy with the remote control and their Budweiser and all of a sudden they're bloody experts?

How amazingly tolerant of you. I like this "new Sanity." I presume you feel the same way about these Saudi head-chopper-offers, too?

quote:

BERLIN, June 18 -- Islamic radicals in Saudi Arabia on Friday beheaded an American contractor whom they kidnapped six days earlier, and in a defiant statement on the Internet pledged more attacks on Americans. Hours later, Saudi security forces reported they had shot dead the leader of the group that asserted responsibility for the abduction.

Johnson was the third American in less than two weeks to meet a violent death in Riyadh. His kidnapping, the first of a Westerner in Saudi Arabia, and the manner of his killing marked a new kind of assault on the American presence in the oil-producing kingdom. "The infidel got his fair treatment," the group said in a statement.

These guys are OK too, then, right? Same thing with these guys? Just "human beings who could possibly use a little enlightenment?"

Who are we to judge, right?

Sanity I refuse to beleive you are this dense....One need not think of himself as "god-like" to condemm the beheading of a television fortune teller.
You are actually trying to defend your stance on this by claiming to be enlightened enough to accept that others are different an dhave a right to those differences defys both common sense and good old fashioned decency.
My god man they intend to cut the fucking man's head off....as in dead dead dead!

I don't think there's anything to be recommended in Muslim's beheading each other. But to look down our noses at how "barbaric" the Saudis are, compared to us enlightened folk, is sanctimonious nonsense when after basking in the cheap thrill of feeling morally uplifted by our outrage and convinced of our superiority, we're just going to turn back to the business of getting through the day and do nothing.

So since we are neither willing nor ready to personally do anything about it(what are you suggessting a personal boycot of oil and its derivatives?) we should not voice our opinions concerning the obvious barbaric practice of beheading. And how does our labeling such an act as barbaric equate to "looking down our noses" or being sanctimonious.
I feel niether sanctimonious, superior nor morally uplifted......repulsed would be a much more accurate description of my emotion at this prospect and I apologise to no one for feeling that emotion.

Right on, Mike. These savages kidnapped a citizen of another country who was a guest in their country, and in a few hours they're going to chop his head off to keep themselves safe from sorcery. You're damned right I look down my nose at that, you're damned right I feel superior to that way of thinking, and I'm damned proud of it. If you can't render a judgment on something that barbaric without being sanctimonious, then nobody is ever qualified to offer an opinion on anything anyone else ever does, anywhere or in any context.

As for not doing anything about it - well, it seems our options are somewhat limited. Them being in Saudi Arabia, and us being here. But what I am going to do is make sure that this event is featured prominently in my next letter to my Senator, in which i will urge him to keep it in mind in the future when making foreign policy decisions regarding Saudi Arabia, and to consider publicly condemning the action on the floor of the US Senate.

Will it do any good? Probably not. But that won't stop me from bringing it up again in the next letter I send him, and periodically in the future as well. I'm going to make it my mission to keep the Saudis' barbarity on Senator Franken's radar for the foreseeable future, and with a little luck, it may eventually have some small effect on the dysfunctional relationship between that primitive monarchy and the United States. If it doesn't, it doesn't, but there's only so much we can do, and that's all I can think of at the moment.

Just take extra care not to appear sanctimonious in your condemnation Panda.....seems one can't be too careful about such things these days.

I'll let Senator Franken do the sanctimonious thang. He's better at it than I am, the scathing little prick.

The reason I stand by my affirmation that they're our friends is that we're in a position to exchange ideas with them.

They're human beings and they're here to stay so we might as well try to get along with them, and if we exchange ideas with them and turn them on to things like science and porn eventually they'll come around.

This is weirdly similar to something I wrote in the 'Science and Morality' thread.

Maybe I'm a conservative after all.

Aha!

I hardly believe you two. You falsely equivocate. All I have to do is look, whether it's down my nose, straight up into the sky or if I can even open my eyes at all...to behead a person because their religious beliefs and because one just may happen to travel to your country, is the dark ages all over again and the modern brutal height of conceit...a murderous and yes, barbaric conceit.

As for being sanctimonious, morally superior...you got it. We in the modern world otherwise known as western civilization, in its great experiment in freedom including of the mind, settle our differences with intellect and compromise...not by chopping each other's heads off.

FYI...is it any fucking wonder that the last human being sold as chattel on earth was, you guessed it kinkroids...Saudi Arabia, 1969, over a century after the 'infidel' [sic] quit such sanctimony.

Right on, Mike.

No comparison.

The operative phrase in my post was, "and do nothing." You're doing something.

Big difference.
