i know this is a bit delayed as a reply but i need to interject something that it seems that many people missed.
this movie is about discovery.. for both of them, learning to accept who they are.
the Dom at first had problems accepting what He was.. therein is where the apparant mental illness is.. but that viewpoint doesn't look at the progression of both characters.. T/they have been brought up in a vanilla society with certain expectations on what proper behaviour is.. not fitting into that little mold makes both of T/them feel that there is something wrong with who T/they are. but at the end both have accepted who they are and what they need in a relationship, they have come to terms that they aren't sick, just different.. as a tale of progression and discovery in the lifestyle i thought this movie was wonderful

Another James Spader film I highly recommend is Sex, Lies & Videotape.  It's not about BDSM, but the intellectual and erotic tension may inspire sexually adventurous souls.  Plus if he turned you on in Secretary, here's your chance to see Spader younger, with longer hair and portraying a cuddlier yet nonetheless complex character.

jali,
i have to agree with you that "secretary" really bothered me. I felt the James Spader chararcter was a very poor example of a dominant. I didn't feel the movie showed much about how their relationship grew because neither party could be open and honest about what they were feeling. Plus this movie was made for the general public and i happened to watch this movie with some vanilla friends. They all said the same thing, that people involved in that kinky shit are just fucked up. I have seen the movie a few times, and it didn't grow on me anymore than when i watched it the first time.

I felt kind of ashamed of liking that movie (from a feminist perspective) but I did.  I imagined myself in the male dom's place and the secretary was a cross-dressed friend.  The fantasies it fueled were wonderful. LOL.

I loved this movie from the first time I watched it. At first watching yes I felt there were some "issues" with the characters "mental status", and it portraying them as weak. Yet I watched it a second time that same evening. And in  subsequent viewings,  the complexities of both characters become more evident.  The ins and outs, of day to day living almost and dealing with who you are and acceptance of who you are.

As with any film that might lead you to think, it requires more than just one viewing, look deeper into the characters, with more than a superficial glance, think most of us would find at least one if not more nuances to ouselves within them

I'm sorry I cannot agree. I respect your opinion but "T/they" are portrayed as social misfits with mental maladies. This movie does very little to make those involved in BDSM more accepted by the mainstream of society (especially in the United States).

Did it occur to anyone that Gray might have been a bit screwed up because he was in transition from sub to Dom?  I'm thinking specifically of the female lawyer to came in, verbally abused Gray a bit and then dismissed Le' with a disdainful, "submissive."

I wouldn't lay any money on that interpretation but it struck me that way last time I watched it.

Any time Hollywood addresses BDSM, the characters are in some way, dysfunctional.  That pisses me off!

As I posted before, it's important to realize that we are talking about story-telling, and in all story-telling the characters have to have dysfunctions, or issues that they are forced to face and overcome.

A movie where two sane, and normal, people with no problems, get together and fall in love would have no plot, no tension, no appeal.

This is just how fiction works.

Two adult characters building a consensual, bdsm relationship couldn't be given problems to overcome other than emotional dysfunctions?

Yup, one suspects the other of being a serial killer (Torquemada Killer)-- Business failure/nonconsensual behavior/nonconsensual voyarism/murder/poly v nonpoly (Murder at Roissy)

Of course they can...and eventually I believe that will happen. The history of gay characters in movies and tv is a good example of how that eventually progressed. Sadly, it appears that the general viewing public finds it easier to accept alternative lifestyles if they can feel some superiority and empathy for them. Over time, as they become used to seeing it, they accept it better.

I guess I''m just glad that unlike movies like 91/2 Weeks this couple got to be happy and keep their D/s natures. They also unabashedly used the word submissive. That's a huge step forward.

John, do I recall you saying this book is out of print? I was down at Powell's Books in Portland 2 weeks ago, and it's a huge bookstore. I looked for Loving Dominant and Murder but they had neither. Granted, they had very little non-fiction bdsm at all.

I know LD is not out of print, (bought a copy for my ex, last year), but is Murder?

It's on the "not to be republished list."  Even Greenery may have a few copies left and some large bookstores may have a substantial stock, but once those are gone it's history.

Loving Dominant, on the other hand, is a kinky energizer bunny.  As the second oldest how-to for the hetero BDSMer, it just keeps selling and selling.  I'm hoping Libby will be still getting royalties after I'm polution drifting in the Gulf Stream.
