Vendor tells of alerting NYC Police to car bomb - Yahoo News

I guess we should be grateful for incompetence, huh?

Interesting event, Rich.

Can't wait to find out the details: TEA party sympathizers or AQ?

Wow.  There is no question whatsoever that this was a bombing attempt, unlike some of the suspicious things investigated.

AQ would have done a better job.  The wiring was described as amateurish, and the idea of leaving the engine running and hazard lights flashing is ridiculous - just draws attention.  And an SUV could have had a lot more destruction within it than just three propane tanks and ten gallons of gas.

It took several hours after the initial smoke, for the robot to retrieve the stuff?  Thank God that the bombers didn't know how to set something off that gave no warning.

From the article on Yahoo news fed from the AP:

Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano said on NBC's "Meet the Press" that officials are treating the incident as a potential terrorist attack. The mayor said earlier Sunday, "We have no idea who did this or why" but said it's not surprising the city is a frequent target of terrorism.

Nice way to feed into public panic Janet! What happened to withholding a statement until they have further evidence? Or is this a way for HS to justify their existence?

Edited to add - I'm glad no one was hurt.

Probably a very angry person, Firm, one way or another.

The New York Daily News had a very timely editorial yesterday morning.

those dirty fucking muslims!

I think we should exterminate them

The clear and present danger of homegrown Islamist terrorism grows weekly. Plots are coming at New York and America from every which way and at increasing speed. Hard on the heels of Najibullah Zazi's subway bomb try, the Manhattan U.S. attorney has indicted two Brooklyn men, U.S. citizens, for allegedly conspiring to abet Al Qaeda's communication needs and its capacity to detonate explosives. Count the arrests of Wesam el-Hanafi and

I'll be watching this case with extreme skepticism including any arraignment and all of the testimony. I don't necessarily believe any of the speculation so far and I am afraid it will take a lot more for me to...believe the govt.

It may just be that we needed something more in NY to keep the 'war on terrorism' alive.

Look....

Everyone knows its those evil fucking muslims that are behind everything wrong with the world today.

Its on the news every day.

How does that go again?  News you can trust?

Americans always forget who the enemy is and who deserves to be exterminated.

If we dont have fear we cant have war and without war the average dumb shit citizen could actually demand and get respect in the courts for his constitutional rights.

The executive gold fringe flag would come down.

Hmmmm...............let's see.

We have two five gallon containers of gasoline, propane tanks, and a wiring system to detonate it all.

I'm sure you're right, she's jumping to conclusions.

I mean really, how do you stretch having these harmless materials in an unattended vehicle parked in a crowded area to think it might be an attempted terrorist attack?

I like how they are treating it as a "potential" terrorist incident.  Next time some woman is assaulted in the city I hope the treat it as a "potential" assault incident.

Just to answer the question, it's conceivable that it was just some idiot wanting to kill a person or destroy a business for personal reasons.  Granted, it's overkill, but as I said... they could be an idiot.

I can understand caution in deciding this is a terrorist attack.  Terrorism is, afterall, the calculated use of violence (or the threat of violence) against civilians in order to attain goals that are political or religious or ideological in nature.  This may not be the case, and we won't know until we either find out who did it and why, or someone claims responsibility and says why it was done.
