Just to answer the question, it's conceivable that it was just some idiot wanting to kill a person or destroy a business for personal reasons.  Granted, it's overkill, but as I said... they could be an idiot.

I agree, but it is still an attempted act of terrorism regardless of who was behind it and what their motivations were.

I like how they are treating it as a "potential" terrorist incident.  Next time some woman is assaulted in the city I hope the treat it as a "potential" assault incident.

Why would you wish that?

From the article on Yahoo news fed from the AP:

Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano said on NBC's "Meet the Press" that officials are treating the incident as a potential terrorist attack. The mayor said earlier Sunday, "We have no idea who did this or why" but said it's not surprising the city is a frequent target of terrorism.

Nice way to feed into public panic Janet! What happened to withholding a statement until they have further evidence? Or is this a way for HS to justify their existence?

Edited to add - I'm glad no one was hurt.

- LA

Didnt the NY Governor make that statement first?

We have two five gallon containers of gasoline, propane tanks, and a wiring system to detonate it all.

I'm sure you're right, she's jumping to conclusions.

I mean really, how do you stretch having these harmless materials in an unattended vehicle parked in a crowded area to think it might be an attempted terrorist attack?

rml,
I agree!

After all, we've been apologizing and downplaying the strength and abilities of the US for over a year. Everyone can see how this has strengthened the country and empowered the people who are, although poorly misrepresented by the agenda based media like FOX news, in full support of this Administration and the direction the country is headed. Everyone is happy, enjoying life, anxiously awaiting their life long free health care. We love the world the world loves us - we love ourselves! We are living the 'CHANGE!".

This must just be somebody leaving his cell charger on too long and it shorted out, while stopping for a Ferrara's pastry in Times Square; coming home from getting stuff to prepare for some peace festival, climaxed by a big bonfire lit group sing along. The propane was for the gas BBQ grills used for the vegan hot-dogs.

Who doesn't love the USA!?

I would be relieved if it was AQ. If they are down to this kinda thing that would be nice.

Yes, I saw the edit but it really doesn't change anything unless you are making the distinction that one angry person does not fit the definition of terrorism because he is not part of a group that promotes a cause by use of violence.

Hope was a wrong choice of words (I forgot I live in a very PC world, where everyone takes everything literally because they can’t argue the points, so they have to lower themselves to attacks and insults); it should have been when unfortunately and unavoidably it happens next.

Don't get snotty, dude. I saw it on the damn Yahoo home page. It isn't her fault Kink.com doesn't offer a news ticker.

Wow, that is actually a good business idea for them.  You would not believe how many people are on it during work.  They give you an option to follow stocks and bang they are literally the most popular news site on the web.  Damn I got to copywrite this idea, which might be the best money maker since adsense.

Could be, but not from the source I read. I looked at 5 sources when this first broke. I haven't gone back since. I'll look tomorrow when all the hoopla and stupid accusations stop flying.

I don't believe group support is required for terrorism.  What I do agree is required, however, is the intent to attain goals that are political or religious or ideological in nature.  Otherwise, the act would simply be one of criminal nature.

Now, do I believe this particular instance is simply a criminal act and not one of terrorism?  Not really.  In fact I strongly suspect that it was an act of terrorism.  But just because I have a hunch, that doesn't make it fact.

In this, I agree with LadyAngelika that prudence on the part of government representatives might appear to be called for.  It would seem that fanning the flames of fear by declaring this a potential terrorist attack only serves to further the goals of the terrorist.

There is going to be an update news conference on this in a few minutes on Fox. So far I can't see another news agency that is saying anything, but they may have it too.

Update, CNN is talking about it now and saying the news conference will be within the next hour. Fox said any minute. lol
