I also know as case in point that applying for any type of benefit (in Canada at least) that if you have savings or any asset beyond what they consider the "norm", you will have to live off that until it's gone. Even if that includes having to sell your vehicle, sell the house you own (if you do), or "spend" any savings you have (bank account, bonds, whatever). Why do I know this? Because it happened to me but I was lucky (or not so lucky) that it'd been beyond the time period and that my vehicle was considered old enough not to count as an asset.

I know that a lot of places won't hire because of over-qualification. I've been in that situation myself.

Now kevin may consider himself overqualified BUT he's also the one who said he didn't want to start over and something about lousy wages. My deceased brother in law was a mover an shaker in parliamentary circles. That being said he stated quite clearly that should said job be lost he would gladly have accepted any position regardless of income to help support his family. Nothing was beneath him. I may not have liked him much at times, but I knew he had nothing but my sister and niece's best interests at heart.

They make you sell your house and your car before you can get any assistance? Wow, that is really fucked up. Maybe brain should be focusing his energy on that, instead of worrying so much about what the US does. It sounds like you guys could use some help. So tell me, after the gov makes you sell your house and car and you are living on the street...does the assistance include housing?

Well, I am glad they don't think that way here. I have been paying into unemployment all my life and would be very pissed off, if I had gone to collect and they told me "sorry, you saved too much money while you were working, live on that"

If you have over a certain amount in savings... I don't know the exact figure but its something like 14- 16 thousand in savings, you cannot claim benefit (as they call it here).  You can claim for and may be entitled to housing assistance (basically they help top up your rent) tax credits (if you have children) and council tax assistance.  If you are disabled, you might be entitled to a certain amount of disability credit, depending on your means.  It's not all negative.

But Kevin states he isn't entitled to benefit - that is a very specific 'welfare' payment.  He has not stated about other benefits he may or may not get.  He has repeatedly stated he has health issues so it could be that the payments he gets for that are what he is defining as income - only he can answer why and what.

Ok, that sounds a little better. If I had 14-16 thou in the bank, hopefully, I wouldn't need assistance.

Your right I dont. But all I can go by is your profile. Why on earth would you put London UK on your profile if you reside in Ireland. That makes no sense and I cant credit that you would do such a thing
kevin

Oh good grief Kevin!  You really cannot be this dense and say that you have honours in History and what was it , English?

Look babe... You cannot claim to know whether a person is or is not contributing to any particular countries taxes or economy when you have NO idea what investments they may have or where they have lived in the past or where they may work.

Apart from anything else - are you are are you not in Northern Ireland?

I agree boi.  Which is why there is a bit of confusing here over what Kevin is actually saying.  First he doesn't have an income - then he does... then it's he isn't on benefit - which hen changes to ... he's not entitled because he has savings...then it's... he is unemployed - then it changes to well actually, he is on work experience... well no actually... hes volunteering... nothing really makes much sense.

So how much savings can you have?  Cost of living is significantly different in comparrison so people need to take that into account.  You'll get a significant amount of different 'perks' being unemployed - like dental and medical being free.  If you had money/savings, why on earth didnt you put it into retraining?

Roughly 3-4 grand but when I applied last August I had about 10 grand which is above the minimum requirement needed to claim what is known now as job seekers benefit . And now that I have work experience I am excluded until my work experience finishes and my money runs out.

Not a bad idea. But not in the way you might be thinking.  I could buy a building suitable for dungeon space and then rent it out to pros. I could also rent it to local groups for meetings and demos. Then my savings would turn into income and I would be working in a dungeon, doing things I enjoy. Lots of hot women wandering around. Now if I just had the money in savings

It seems you're allergic to any work that entails actually doing, well, work.  Good luck finding someone willing to hire you after your "work experience" is over.  Your particular type of "allergy" is pretty easy to spot, especially when your CV has as many gaping chasms as yours.
