Defensive, no. Condescending, yes. And for good reason.

If you're wound up too, share the defensive label. It's neither what was meant nor said.

You're an educated guy. Take a closer look.

Ok.

Treasure: How many government offices have you been to where you see employees standing around, gossiping, doing their nails, etc. with long lines of people waiting to be seen?

MM: None. Maybe people in Kentucky are different. Couldn't say.

Possible interpretations:

1.  You've never been to Kentucky ("Couldn't say"), yet you wish to imply to Treasure that the "employees standing around" are restricted to only her experience, and only in Kentucky.

Problems:
Treasure isn't from Kentucky.  She spent 13 months there at my behest, and hasn't lived there for a few years now.

Treasure has been very politically active, in the past, at the local level.  Not in Kentucky, however.

Some of Treasure's jobs over the years have been focused in fields in which she has had great interaction with civil servants.

You admit to having no experience with Kentucky civil servants.

Your words seem to claim that you've never had any experience with civil servants doing less than providing the absolute best of service to you, or anyone you are acquainted with.

2.  hmmm ... any other interpretation of your comments seem to escape me.

Help me out here?

Firm

PS. ahhh, I have it!

You are a teaching professional, and therefore include yourself in the category of "civil servant", therefore you are the one being defensive!

Ok, now I've got it!  No need to reply, after all.

No, George actually believed that.

And he was right.

As to the lobby question -- well, the corporations have to lobby because a government run by the people could actually mess things up (for the corporations).

well I stand by what I preach that your pens have more power than guns and the answers lie in the law.

The answers are there but they are damn hard to find.

I was reading some US code the other day and in one sentence they used 2 forms of law and addressed 3 classes all at the same time.

The funny part is that I have on several occasions posted federal law and rulings recorded in corpus juris secumdum and what do the people here say?

its a conspiracy theory?????????????

so with that lack of knowledge how does anyone expect to change anything?

FOR THE BETTER?

Wow. You're an idiot.

Despite your unjustified leaps in "logic," the entire intention is that the girl's post is an exaggerated stereotype based on popular myth rather than reality.

Now, your girl is a smug, defensive creature who never lets anything go (unless she goes to get you to handle it), so it's not hard to see something like "Really? I see _______ all the time." Hence, adding that I'm not going to try to debate the world through her experience where she lives, but that here, it's just not the case. In fact, there's been a successful concerted effort here for the past several years to improve people's experience at the state level--the DMV, amazingly to those of us who remember how it was, runs quite well, with short lines and excellent service.

From that, she jumps to an imagined dig at Kentucky. And now you, though you can be quite balanced, have blinders on when there's a bug up your ass.

Your gratuitous insult (and silly--civil servant?) added aside, that's the reality. Get your defensive knickers in a knot if you've nothing better to do, but you're defending yourself and your girl against nothing but your own mental creations.

That seems to be happening with some frequency on various threads, incidentally.

Maybe the Jihadists are onto something and the death of every man woman and child in America would solve a lot of the world's problems? It'd sort the illegal immigration issue right out in a hurry, for a start, and would reduce global oil consumption a fair bit. No more shitty Metallica records either...

Wow, it is refreshing to see a post where you are being honest in your hatred towards all Americans.  Personally I think if we could just get rid of the haters in the world, everyone else would be a lot happier.

LOL...nobody is blocked, I was just trying to get to sleep (which clearly didn't work). But wouldn't you rather be Canadians? I mean nobody in the world really dislikes us, and we have free health care...and we are all so polite, have better beer, and have french girls!!!
Better beer? You obviously have never sipped a North Coast Old Stock Ale, or a Dogfish Head 90 minute India Pale Ale, or a Lagunitas Brown Shugga, or an Oskar Blues Ten FIDY Russian Imperial Stout.

I'd pit American Craft Beers up against any beers in the world, and it's not Ami chauvinism talking. Weihenstephener Hefe-Weissbier is the best wheat beer on the planet, bar none, and it's from Munich.

And you might have "French" girls, but WE have California Girls.

Dogfish IPA fucking rocks. I love it :) Best beer ever with steamed lobster.

Treasure and KY, I think what you're describing is true proportionalism, which allows single- or several-cause parties (instead of comprehensive platform parties) a real chance to compete, and folks vote for the party (read "cause") rather than the politician. That's the way most of the world runs the show, and you end up with a lot more diverse legislative bodies. The problem is that it only tends to push the gridlock up to a different level of the political process, where you have weak coalition governments that don't due too much, since doing much of anything would splinter the coalition.

Just wanted to add a little something. If I can come up with a real solution I'll definitely share.

Personally, I'd require able-bodied welfare recipients to earn their welfare with service of some type.

Welfare doesn't have to be the dole; after all, most of us earn our keep in some way or other, as needed in the market, and education helps us accomplish that.

Your turn.

I was thinking about something today. Rather than closing down all these factories and putting scads of people on unemployment where they will sit forever because the skillset they have is no longer of use in our economy - I might try something like this:

Take, say GM. Pick three factories that are shutting down. Say that they are now a new company. Take one of the product lines that has been discontinued, like Oldsmobile or Pontiac. Say this new company now owns those designs and has the right to manufacture those cars and develop new designs from them. Take the former workforce and tell them they now constitute the owners of the new company. The newly issued stock will be divided up amongst them. They can then hold a meeting, elect a Board of Directors and appoint managers. The company is now theirs. Since the company is owner operated, they are not obligated to be unionized but can be if they so desire.

Take a big hunk of that bailout money and tell them operating expenses for the company are covered for the next, oh, say three years.

It's up to them how wages are set, what benefits are provided, how the company is run, and so on. Their fate is in their own hands. If they make a go of it, they'll be far better off than they would if they'd just kept their old jobs. If it doesn't work out - well they were employed for three more years and would end up on unemployment anyways.

If they manage to come up with a way to make affordable quality cars that people want to buy - then it's a win-win for everyone all around.

Treasure this is a fantastic thread!

In the past (though not very well thought out, so never aired to discuss), I've often wondered to myself.  What if we did away with parties altogether and thought of causes (or had goals) you wanted to see accomplished or tackled.  What if the politician chose the causes he believes in and will fight for, regardless of what party affiliation he has, and people voted, not for the man, but for the cause.  In the end, avging out all the causes one man will fight for and all the things people would like to see tackled would determine who would be most suited to be elected.

Yay!  That's the idea Louve.  And I like yours.  I've never agreed with any one party's platform.  And third party candidates really don't stand a chance.  This would level the playing field greatly!
