Wait until after I had gotten a good night's sleep, and taken care of an early and busy, Saturday morning schedule, Vince. Funny how things work out though. This way, I get a look at character on display.

The question, I believe was whether a crusade was being advocated, as a solution to the incompatibility of Western/Christian and Islamic values. I think only someone looking for the most extreme interpretation possible would see it that way. There are all sorts of problems with her idea of converting them to Christianity, but I think the animus to Ms. Hirsi Ali is that she flies in the face of those who wish to impose a worldview of moral equivalence.

It`s not slander if it`s true.......remember that.....

Sure ,what they both did was wrong but are far from morally equivalent.

Of course you didn`t agree and have gone down hill ever since.

The entire concept is sooooo clash of civilizations and soooo 2001. It reminds me of Laura Bush bemoaning poor Afghani women and their lack of nail polish... we have to free their fingertips (talk about minimizing the plight of the poverty stricken elderly, children and women in that country... and our bombs didn't liberate their tummys)


No one was ever freed by bombs and occupation. And NO, I don't wanna be involved with that... The entire point is that if we were weal and twue feminists we would bag on multiculturalism, and I think that was what attracted Rich to posting this article, we lefties are abandoning women in their hour of need because Western Civ. is so good for us! Well, like I said, it isn't necessarily all that good for even us.

I take issue with the hypocrisy of it all... There are laws surrounding FGM in many Muslim countries, just because it is against the law doesn't mean it will not happen.... just like beating women in this country happens ALL THE TIME (in every group, Christian Republicans beat their wives and molest their daughters as much as anyone else)

That may be true. I have known mean Muslim men; even a good man I have known had some meanness in him. However, such assertions, though possibly true, are unscientific if not corroborated by sociological and psychological research. And if so, then how much meanness is due to genetics, how much to being religious nuts and how much to sociological conditions?

On the other hand I have met some very nice Muslim and Jewish women that were not mean at all.

You are not very good at this. More and more, Julia, all this education you like brag about seems like a great big waste of the taxpayer's dollar.

Try again. Weren't you bragging recently that you were trying to set aside your own sacred things, in order to better understand those of others? I realize that would involve actually behaving in a way you claim to behave, so it might be damn near impossible for you, but nobody said grad school was easy, did they?

Rich, both Islam and Christianity have a long, bloody history of proselytism and imperialism. That is the moral equivalence that hovers over Ms Ali's "final solution" to the "clash of civilizations." An alternative would be for both to acknowledge their historical sins and build bridges which Ms Ali and especially Mr Steyn abhor. It is better to have the camel inside the tent pissing out than outside the tent pissing in.

Additionally, you have to overcome this point made by juliaoceania before either you or Steyn can be taken seriously here:

"This seems a goodly attempt by the author of this article to cast "feminism" and the "left" and "multiculturalism" in a negative light, and yet I see no quotes from these so called feminists and leftists to support his contention that we do not support feminism in that part of the world.... typical"

Steyn says: "Ayaan Hirsi Ali’s great cause is women’s liberation. Unfortunately for her, the women she wants to liberate are Muslim, so she gets minimal support and indeed a ton of hostility from Western feminists..."

Just empty rhetoric and propaganda without supporting notation.

It isn't their statements which condemn them, Vince. It is their collective silent shrug. Julia knows this perfectly well of course, but you have to understand that Julia is a self-obsessed hypocrite who is consistently blind to the contradictions between the values she claims to possess, and her behavior in the forums. Just the other day, she was self-righteously declaring that,

The question at the heart of this thread, and in others I've kicked off on the same theme, is the indifference to the conditions of women's rights under Islam, among people I would expect to give a shit. It's something I've wondered about for years. At one point, I thought it was a based on a belief that trying to make a difference when the opportunity arose would somehow be seen as supporting the Bush II policies that opened the door. My theory was that with a Democrat administration in charge of the war, we would see a gradual, growing change, a discussion of what we might be able to do, a celebrity or two jumping on the bandwagon. Maybe an awareness ribbon.

Instead, the indifference remains. The stories, the incidents, wash up on the beach of the collective awareness, then are carried back away by the next tide. These aren't matters that are far away and beyond our influence. How many are even aware that the American Academy of Pediatrics recently changed from condemnation of FGM to "recommending it's members decline to perform" such surgeries? That is right here at home.

Answer me this, Vince. 20 years ago, when you saw an "End Apartheid" bumper sticker, did you leap to the conclusion that it was a call for the US to invade South Africa?
