I wouldn't have let either of my two do what she did at 16 - but that is because they were no more ready for that sort of responsibility than fly to the moon , but obviously, this kids parents thought she could succeed.

annnd they were wrong.

And many adults have perished at sea. Who should we blame in this case? Or maybe none of us should leave our house?

I know I'm being a little facetious, but we should not live in fear.

When I was 7 and my little brother 5, my mom put us on a plane to go visit my aunt. It was a 4 hour flight. At the time, my parents could board the plane to make sure we were seated safely and when we got to our destination, a flight attendant escorted us to my aunt.

Those were very different times, granted, and airlines were not deadly afraid to be liable for our safety, but my mom always said she would have never done this is she wasn't convinced that at the age of 7 I would have never, ever talked to a stranger or let my little brother out of my sight.

She did however protect us fiercely in other ways though. We didn't have junk food in the house ;-)

Good parents know what they can let their kids do or not.

Holly what the heck are you talking about.  Her life was not in iniment (sp) death danger.  Yeah she had some rough and probably scary moments but she wasn't a stupid kid who set out thinking it would always be smooth sailing.  She had food and heat and she had the smarts that got her to the indian ocean, she had her experience of sailing all her life and her safety nets worked.

Talk about reaching for the drama switch.

If I was this girls parents I would be proud of how she handled herself in this situation. I would be proud of what she accomplished.

My ex and I let our daughter go to a Muse concert with some friends. We simply played taxie and left. Recently I went to NY for the weekend and my oldest watched her brother who is only a couple yrs younger than her. Yes I let my teenagers stay home alone for an entire weekend. She was totally responsible. She infact has her babysitting license and her CPR and 1st aid certification. She wants her driving permit, her father and I agree she is not ready for that responsibility, she is to easily distracted. However, there comes a point we have to trust in the skills we have taught our children, we have to trust in them, their judgment, their abilities. We have to let them try to fly (so to speak). As a mom I dont expect her to not to ever fall or fail, its my job to give her the skills she needs to succeed and to be there when and if she falls to help her back up.

Aimed at nobody... I think my response to this would likely have been very different had I not read Maiden Voyage.

It is true that Tania Aebi was older than Abby but as mentioned before Tania had almost no sailing/navigation experience, which is what made her accomplishment all the more remarkable.

I have read the basic news story in which the experts claim this recent group of young sailors and such are being pushed by their parents, and though that might be the case, it is still educated opinion and not fact as the experts can not know what is in the minds and hearts of the parents.

Are we supposed to live our lifes in fear of the "What if" the reality is my kids could slip in the shower or get run over by a car in our parking lot. Or my daughter could fall skateboarding and break her neck. When do we go to far with the negative possibilities? When do we let ourselves and our children live?

Abby Sunderland's route was carefully planned to keep her away from pirate zones.
Her brother Zac had a possible pirate encounter on his warmer route.

Fear no.Caution yes.

Could she have waited til she was older or not had her adventure all alone?

She was looking for a record which sometimes drives folks to do things far beyond their capabilities and limits. The youngest, the youngest solo ,the youngest solo gone the farthest/fastest and on.

Being alone on the open sea nowadays is more dangerous then it used to be,IMO.

But I`m glad she made it ok and had a blast apparently

I appriciate where you are coming from, Inky...but I see a huge difference between a child home alone for a weekend and a child alone on a boat as this 16 yr old was

Holly the risk is still there, different but still very much the same IMO. I know many parents who would NEVER leave their teens home alone over night yet alone for a weekend. I know some adults who shouldn't be left to their devices so at what age do we let go? At what age do we let them experience life? I think for parents that is a very individual thing and one that only we can decide for OUR children. No offense but its easy to sit on the side lines and judge after the fact.

Holly, no one is saying she didn't need HELP.  The damn mast broke of course she needed help.  But that's a BIG DIFFERENCE between her boat not being able to continue on and her NEARLY dying.  She had safety precautions in place and well when trouble happened they did what they were supposed to and she was found in damn good shape.

She wasn't in ANY immediate danger of DYING because the mast broke, she didn't just BARELY survived.  She had 2 weeks worth of food, a damn good boat with i believe made up of 5 airtight containers which would have kept her afloat probably in even worse conditions, she had a heater and she had enough common sense to say okay i need to turn on my beacons.  The plane found her in pretty good shape outside of her mast, and she was picked up about a day later in good spirits and not injured.

So yeah crying out she nearly died is being dramatic and is clearly not accurate.  Then trying to say she need to be rescued due to her equipment breaking was akin to nearly dying is simply wrong.

You are sitting there judging her and her parents decision and insinuating false concepts that aren't accurate or true to the sitution to support your judgment.  SHE would have been irresponsible and stupid and not ready to me, if she hadn't made the call to start up the beacons admitting she needed help.  THAT had nothing to do with her age, but instead with her sound reasoning and accurate assessment of her situation -- something a CAPTAIN does when things get fucked up on their boats.

I have stated I have mixed feelings about this.

In this case "trouble" was that her boat had been caught by a wave and dismasted.
If an adult's boat had been dismasted, the adult sailor would have likewise been in trouble.

Her age had nothing to do with it, a point Abby herself is quick to make: "Since when does age create gigantic waves and storms?"

there are many expierences in life that 16 is simply too young to have. My opinion is this was one of them.

If it had been say a 35 yr old would you be screaming, "they shouldn't have put themselves in danger?"

What a bunch of horribly protective parents. No great adventurers coming from your offspring. Fuck Natalie Holloway. Fuck the missing kids.

You raise children to learn that they are incapable of being self reliant and you get weak adults. You raise children to fear the unknown and that the boogeyman lurks around every corner and you have done your children a grave disservice as they substitute courage for fear, self reliance for dependency and a sense of adventure for safety.

Hide your children away, keep them safe from all of the dangers of the world and don't blame yourself when they fail to live up to any type of expectations and just blend in with all of the greys that surround them.

Maybe her folks could run out and buy a Hummer top protect her. What a wise decision that would have been.

Knee jerk reactions to situations.

This kid is going to grow up to do great things. That is a sure thing.
