If it had been say a 35 yr old would you be screaming, "they shouldn't have put themselves in danger?"

I would be screaming that.

If they want to do these risky little adventures then let them be responsible for the costs when things go wrong, as they often do.

If you want to take on the risk then be prepared to pay for the costs when you need to be rescued.

So anyone who ever NEEDS rescue efforts weather on land or water should foot the bill? So if someone gets lost hiking and has to have a rescue dog, ect they should foot the bill? So the men and women who make their living on the water should fit the bill if they need rescue services? How humanitarian of you.

ETA: So every time a child is lost and cops go searching and an amber alert goes out the parents should fit the bill?

At what age do we let them experience life?
there are many expierences in life that 16 is simply too young to have. My opinion is this was one of them.

no.....35 is an adult. 16 is not.

You have a point Inked, but there is still a valid question here. Should people be financially responsible for their own decisions ?

For their decisions yes, but the reality is even a mere 16 yr old girl doesn't have control of mother nature. So is she really responsible for needing rescue services?

Holly what the heck are you talking about.  Her life was not in iniment (sp) death danger.  Yeah she had some rough and probably scary moments but she wasn't a stupid kid who set out thinking it would always be smooth sailing.  She had food and heat and she had the smarts that got her to the indian ocean, she had her experience of sailing all her life and her safety nets worked.

Talk about reaching for the drama switch.

angel

And she was being battered by thirty foot waves.

I take it you have never been on the ocean.

In that size craft with those size waves her life was most definitely in danger.

I also have to wonder if the people supporting this would be saying the same things if she didn't survive.

I wonder if she had not run into any storms or needed rescue if those against this would still be against it.

BTW.. if she had died I would have still supported her parents original decision, mourned her death yes. However, I would have hoped her family would have celebrated her life as well.

ETA: Life is about taking risks some are just greater than others but without risks we really don't live.

she is a child...if anyone is to be held accountable it should be her parents.

So her parents are responsible for controling mother nature now? Damn I didn't get that memo that I had that power as a mom! So again are we holding EVEVERYONE who needs rescue finaciallly responsible regardless of the situation?

Actually Rule, i have been in the ocean probably more than most people.  I didn't say her life wasn't in danger -- the whole voyage was a DANGEROUS voyage where at any given moment due to the completely unstable condition of the ocean and unpredictibleness of same her life could have been in danger.  Yes, i know what she was battling however, she was NOT to the point where she BARELY survived or she was in iniment danger of dying (i.e, the boat capsized adn she was stuck under it or she was thrown into the water with no access to getting back on the boat, or being caught without water or heat or she was hurt wherein she almost died).  Just because she was in the storm and her boat was getting battered doesn't mean she nearly died or was ever even close to dying.

Again this situation doesn't need drama to make it an exciting story or adventure.

Not everyone, but some people invite danger. Last winter, here in the UK, we had people twho were told by guides that it was unsafe to go up into the mountains. They still went, and needed rescuing, surely they should pay the costs involved.

And who decides if their was a "calculated risk" or if the risk was "unforseen." I think that is going to vary person to person so I dont see their being a conscensious there. Which seems obvious even from this thread.

her parents are responsible for her because she is a minor. If there is to be reimbursement for the costs of the rescue then they should be held accountable.

What utter bullshit.

You're talking about a small watercraft with a 16-year old alone, starting out at the wrong time of the year when she and and her parents should have known would put her in the heart of the storm season on the Indian Ocean.

This was an accident waiting to happen and she is lucky she survived.

People who make their living on the water do not take unnecessary risks and I have no sympathy for people that do.

If that decision is made in the face of all evidence to the contrary then yes, they should foot the bill.

Go ahead and acuse me of playing a drama card again if it makes you feel better Angel, but her life was in danger when 30 ft waves were pounding a craft that size.

As a Brit ive got to respond to the, she was a minor, point.

In this country although not allowed to drink, smoke or drive a car, someone is deemed responsible enough to get married and have children at 16.

Yes the law is crazy, but if you can be responsible for children, you can make the choice as to if you want to take a boat onto the ocean.

One word..

Pirates.

Are we supposed to live our lifes in fear of the "What if" the reality is my kids could slip in the shower or get run over by a car in our parking lot. Or my daughter could fall skateboarding and break her neck. When do we go to far with the negative possibilities? When do we let ourselves and our children live?

The "what ifs" are calculating the risks against the merits. Yes, you left your kids home alone for the weekend. I'm sure you have neighbors though, and certainly a phone in your house that they could use in case of emergency.

Your kids are mature, but would you let them walk through a gang infested area alone at night? Of course not. Because as a PARENT you calculate the risk of that event to be too high for your minor child.

A 35 year old, as Holly has stated is an adult. Right or wrong, they are responsible for their own decisions. A minor, their parents are held accountable for their kids decisions.

As others have mentioned, if this girl died, then most people would be disagreeing with the parents allowing her to go, not just a select few. If she had succeeded in completing the entire voyage, the girl would be applauded for her success without any mention of the parents allowing her to go.

As things actually did turn out, there is a media storm and everyone is going to take sides. Would I have let my 16 year old son make such a trip? Hell no. Do I believe that a 16 year old can be responsible enough to make such a trip. Yes. But that isn't the problem. Responsibility and maturity are not the same. Regardless of how long she had been sailing, and how knowledgeable she was about sailing, at 16, one always thinks they are able to handle themselves in an emergency situation, but in reality, when an emergency strikes, they don't have enough experience to know they can react as quickly or as appropriately as needed.

The parents are milking this for as much attention and money as they can. I just hope one day the kid realises that her Mum and Dad don't give a fuck about her.
coming back a live hero, or not coming back at all she will have served her purpose of lining thier pockets, the news media will give them a car full of money for sending her off to die like that.
They are not blithe about the dangers involved, they just want the money more than their child.
