I wanted to address this seperately.

Illegal? nope. what you decide to do with your body should be your decision, with the exception of death. Assisted suicide is another discussion and not for this thread.

If a drunk stays at home and polutes his/her body with as much booze as they can get their hands on, affecting no one but themselves... no skin off my nose. Its when the children they have, the pets they possess, the society that is at risk when they drive.... then it becomes my business and that "skin on my nose"

Do you know how remote and vast some of California's lands are? It takes equipment on the level of what the military uses in Afghanistan to penetrate them, and we have law enforcement die every year doing so. I would suggest you learn something about it before being so flippant. We have a literal occupation happening in California of land that was so wondrously wild and clean it would make anyone awe struck. It is being deforested and degraded so that people who want to smoke cigarettes and drink booze can have their vices while keeping others from theirs... oh happiness and joy!

To be honest, I find it rather ironic that a smoker would "worry" about the health impacts of pot... seriously ironic

What kind of perimeter control do they use at Area 51? I know they don't have guards every 500 or 1000 feet, yet they seem to know exactly when and where someone has crossed the line. Whatever they use, wouldn't the same thing be effective along the border? I really don't know, but it is just a thought.

Igor, and they're probably using some of that same technology along S. Korea's border. *Noone* gets accross that border!'I've seen that on t.v., people trying to get close to "area 51" and when they get to about a half mile away (not even to the warning signs), soldiers or police or security or whatever come out of nowhere and confront them and tell them that if they tresspass beyond the signs they can be shot on sight.
That technology and Troops along the border would stop this mess real quick.
But, "Bush 3" doesn't seem to even care! There has to be penalties for elected (and appointed) public officials who either can't or won't do their jobs.
We could effectively have that border closed within 48 hours with 30,000 Troops just like in S. Korea. If Obama won't do it then the congress should do it.
A LOT of them are going to lose their jobs in November because of this issue and they should.

You may consider it ironic all you wish. Its my life and my health, affecting no one but myself. It doesnt affect my decision making process or motor coordination.

If you wish to be naive enough to believe this cant be stopped at the federal level, then please, by all means, be so. The "war on drugs" has been unsuccessful because its profitable for it to be so... when it stops being profitable to look the other way, then it will end.

Okay,it appears you are serious.....Area 51 lies within Nellis Air force Base....Air Force Base's have security.....secure and secret area's within a secure air  force base have uber security.
Do you really think this can be replicated along our vast common border with Mexico....besides were they to tell you what sort of security is in place at Area 51....they would simply have to kill you....or as servant suggests....just shoot you [:D]

Pot caling kettle black. Just because someone doesnt agree with your every position doesnt make someone have a complete lack of disreagrd for your points. Sadly, you cant seem to practice what you preach.

Mike, I saw a program about that on the History Channel, "area 51" *does* exist!
They fly the scientists and technicians in and out each day from Las Vegas in two planes that are unmarked. And they showed one of the signs that said you can be shot on sight!
And that's a large area there, 100-200 miles in circumferance. Whatever they're using to detect intruders I don't think "distance" is a hindrance!

Julia, if what you're saying is true why doesn't the state of Ca. send the national guard in there and gun them down?

domiguy -> RE: What would it take to actually secure the border with Mexico? (7/26/2010 10:20:08 PM)

popeye wants to tie up 30,000 troops to protect 1969 miles of border, much of which uninhabitable terrain.

Lord knows what the cost might be to build roads, the fence, the barricades, the housing and then to pay the "30,000 troops necessary"

He is fiscally conservative ya know!!!

He compared the 1969 miles of the US/Mexico border to the 160 mile border shared by North and South Korea. Interesting analogy.

Poor pops, now that Lou Dobbs is no longer ranting about illegals he is left to his own devices and can only muster up the comparison of equating our border problems with those plaguing North and South Korea. Wow!!

I don't think Lou Dobbs or Howie Carr would approve.

Better yet why don't we just legalize marijuana as it is obvious that anyone who wants it can get it and it has been proven to be not really any more harmful than alcohol.

Then we can spend the cash from the taxation and profits of the pot industry to build the fence and support the 30,000 troops.

The irony of course is that as long as the "war" continues...it will continue to be wildly profitable.
Tazz, the war is a complete failure and a waste of resources.People will do what they like...always have and always will....this little war on drugs has done nothing but create narco kingpins, criminal cartels, swollen jail populations and occasional headlines for Law enforcement agencys which make occasional splashy seizures thereby justifying their over inflated budgets for the next fiscal year.....and to what end,we are still the worlds foremost consumer of receational drugs...and with no end in sight.

Are you fucking kidding me here?
I could think of several ways off the top of my head.
#1 We have advanced technology and can send people to the moon but we can't secure our own borders?
How can we help other countries if we can't defend this one?

Anyway, use the prisoners in the prisons and county jails to build the fence, they can work different shifts day and night, and have contractors working with them.

There is no way that very many Americans would be willing to build a fence in a totally inhospitable condition.

Treating prisoners in such a manner would probably be considered to be inhumane treatment.

we really need illegals to build the fence.

To what end ?...In the context of this discussion let us limit the scope to marihauna. In truth I am aware of no efforts at the current time to either decriminalize nor legalize any other substance.

dovie -> RE: What would it take to actually secure the border with Mexico? (7/26/2010 10:42:21 PM)

I need to offer a disclaimer first please.

Disclaimer:  I'm a little cranky this evening, it's been hot, forensic accountants suck pino and would benefit greatly from some haldol shot through a blow gun by a nameless person behind the curtain.

I'm in mind-meld lust with a few of the posters here...vincent and aphotic, are in my opinion spiking the right vein.
(forgive me if I left some of the others out. These two came to mind)

Give it up!  We are not going to contain the border and stop dem dere "illegals" from coming over to America, "the land of the free and the brave!"

America will have a Hispanic president within the next 100 years.

Hispanics will outnumber "others" in how long??? You do the friggin math.

Spanish will officially be a 2nd/1st language.

"They" can stop a fruit fly from entering America, "the land of the free and the brave," and "they" can't stop the cocaine train. Uh-huh!  Americans love drugs!

The situation is one of economics....baseword-- "money!"

"The world is flat!"  Get over it!...Ain't no clicking your heels Dorothy and chanting "there's no place like home." Aunty Em is in Cancun.

Population-Economics-Brain drain ( How many physicists, chemists, etc., are coming out of America's educational system?"

Smoke and mirrors..."Distract, delay, detain"

Fuggeddaboudit.. Accept, Adjust, Adapt, Migrate or Die.

I love this country, born in it, fought for it and appreciate it.
We are some lucky folks, comparatively.

The "illegals" won't kill us.  Like the frightening scene under Christmas past...IGNORANCE is my bet.

2nd Disclaimer: The above opinions are mine.

Want to help America...go feed a hungry somebody, help a homeless vet.

dovie---*deep breath* Okay, that's my vent in this thread for the month- going back to random stupidity; clicking heels.

Legalization is desirable for all drugs, not just marijuana. The health risks of marijuana are lower than those of many other drugs, but that is not the crucial issue. Much of the traffic from Mexico or Colombia is for cocaine, heroin and other drugs, while marijuana production is increasingly domestic. Legalizing only marijuana would therefore fail to achieve many benefits of broader legalization.

I think its going beyond just the pot issue.
