ORIGINAL: tazzygirl IF one is illegal, but paying into the system, they are using someone elses SS number. Identity theft. Hmm...if I am putting money into your bank account, that is identity theft? Please, someone perpetrate this form of theft on me immediately. You know better than this, tazzy. No, she is correct.....because trust me, they may be paying into social security, however, they are the same ones that are out using YOUR ssn to get credit, rent houses, get utilities, car loans, etc. Then they bail on the payments, destroy those rented houses, get the utilities turned off.....see where I'm going with this? Use your brain.....it IS identity theft. And as a victim of it, trust me, you don't want to have to try and get it fixed! I've been trying for over 10 years, and for every one fraudulent account I get rid of, two more pop up. Ironically, it's Social Security that often alerts (inadvertantly) someone to ID theft. You need to actually READ the statement they send out to you every year showing what you've paid into it. It's when folks find a discrepancy with the money put in that often brings the crime to their attention. When I worked for the Phoenix PD, we'd get calls from people all the time questioning what to do when they found it. Also, run your credit report at least once a year...you get a free on from each of the big 3 credit bureaus a year. It was only after I'd been denied a loan that I discovered that someone had my info. And I have no idea how they tracked down a ssn, I have my original social security card in my possession still.
