Weren't most of the 911 bombers educated men from affluent families? Osama himself comes to mind...

I'd wager most of them identify as Americans first, Muslims second.

I have had a personal gestalt in that exact regard.

I have a daughter who weighed some 1#9oz at birth. There are few more strongly anti-abortion than I. When 0bama0- a man who twice voted to require doctors and hospitals to starve to death certain newborn infants, some of whom were born in better shape than my own daughter, I went into a period of reflection that was well-nigh a daze. I literally roamed the country in shock for a couple days; and I finally realized my key mistake. (Note: the subject here is not abortion; in this context it is important only as the cause of my visceral disgust (as opposed to mere disappointment) at the election of 0bama0 and the impetus of my introspection)

I had allowed what many philosophers would choose as the three great loyalties in life- God, family, country- to become intertwined almost to the point of synonymousness (word? should be). But they should be distinct, and hierarchical as listed above.

I cut myself some small amount of slack, ultimately, for my confusion. I decided it was relatively easy for a Christian to intertwine God and country.

I do not imagine for a second that such an error is as easy for Muslims to make, or that many of them make it. I'd wager Muslims in Saudia Arabia identify as Muslims first, much less those that happen to be here... Islam is, after all, designed as the purest of theocracies.

In the end, my deliberations were quite liberating. I had always felt that I owed the country. That burden is lifted.

Selah.

I suppose loyalty is indeed an emotion; so the entire post is rooted in emotion.

Osama was not one the the bombers... He was one of the leaders.

I was actually aware of that, julia [:)]

Perhaps I should have made it clear that the Osama reference was solely as one of the "rich" ones "they" recruited.

Try sprinkling in a little truth and clarity next time.....emotion mixed with your blindly partisan political beliefs add up to a post chock full of inaccuracies and outright lies(such as the spurious claim of Doctors being forced to starve certain new borns).

I don't want to derail this thread into your pet topic of discussion... it has nothing to do with this topic.

Tolerance is your pet topic not mine. Hypocrisy on the other hand is one of my pet topics, I don't like it. When you claim to tolerate all beliefs you can't really expect me not to respond.

You can think I am intolerant all you want because I don't like it when I see people denigrated for their faith. I just have a different idea of what tolerance is and what it isn't

I agree that we have different ideas of what tolerance is, the issue isn't that you don't live up to my standard. The issue is that I don't think you live up to your definition of tolerance.

When I've had these discussions with you, at times you've had trouble distinguishing between criticizing a theistic belief and ridiculing a theist.

You do realize there are many good religious people in this world...and the vast vast vast vast majority have no desire to convert you or preach to you...sooo why do you insist on insulting them by telling them their religion is bullshit?

Does it make you feel big?... Make you think you have power over them? Do you just like to insult people out of hand for kicks? Maybe you think you’re cool. Nope....You are like a little kid at the front of a movie theater spouting cuss words and giggling...Hopefully as you get older you will gain some manners.

Butch

Where did I say I get in peoples faces with that sentiment?

quote:

So Julia what do you think of my supposition that ALL RELIGION IS BULLSHIT.  I attack no one for their belief, I do not deprive them of their right to worship, I just remind them I BELIEVE all religion is bullshit.  Then I usually have to remind them that the "free exercise" clause also implies the the converse, FREEDOM FROM religion.

Now reading the highlighted part it is pretty fucking clear to me I did not imply I stood in front of houses of worship and say this, it appears to me the following is meant:   I reserve the right to call bullshit on the motherfuckers that come up to me in the god damned mall and handing me "tracts".   I reserve the right to tell you to your face I believe you're full of bullshit the moment you ask if I am "saved".  I usually counter that question, with one of my own, "Am I drowning"?

I frankly do not care if you believe in the "Flying Spaghetti Monster Fable", as long as you do not hassle me.  The minute you express to me that I need saving, guess the fuck what. You don't want to hear I believe it is as much bullshit as the Norse, or Roman, or Greek, or Sumerian, or any other mythology, too fucking bad, so fucking sad, maybe next time you'll think before you proselytize.

GotSteel,

I get that you do not think much of what I have to say about religious tolerance... well I don't think much of your opinion on the topic either. This is called a difference of opinion...notice I did not call you ignorant, stupid, etc etc etc...

I often don't agree with you, but you hit the nail on the head.
You have the RIGHT to have your opinion, and if I feel the need to rant on and on, and literally attempt to berate or beat you over the head
trying to make you accept MY opinion, I am not being "tolerant" at all!

But of course, I am RIGHT!! I tell you I am right!!!!

People have a RIGHT to disagree, period.

Most of the most intolerant people in the world, would never see that they are often far from "BEING TOLERANT" when people don't see things their way.

IRONY??

Because Julia it too is a bullshit fable, MAN makes religion and gods, and why does MAN do this?  Simple answer is to explain the shit we do not understand, and our fear of death.  Religion offers a comfortable view of how we got here, and it offers us the hope of "eternal salvation"  (well most religions do) If maybe we all got to the point of figuring well I am "worm food when I die", and got off the religion, we all might be better off.

You have a problem with people telling you that you need to be saved.

Yet you have no problem telling people they need to consider themselves to be worm food and nothing more.

What makes you more right?

I wonder at people who need to belittle others beliefs in comparison to their own. It says to me that they are not firm enough in their own ideas so they have to negate the way other people think...

Just an opinion

I put up with slogging through 15 pages of religious bickering, but I am the fucking bad guy here because I have the temerity to state I BELIEVE ALL RELIGION IS BULLSHIT??

Yeah sure what the fuck ever.  I am very content to believe when my ass shuffles off this mortal coil that, that is the end, there is no afterlife for me, in my view, no heaven, no hell.

In the long run in 100,000 years when the sun has gone nova and fried off all the life, and earth is just an empty frozen ice ball hurtling through space, will anyone's including my belief have mattered????

Philosophically,

And others are content to believe they will go to heaven, preferably, or to hell. Until one belief or the other is validated with fact, who has the right to tell the other what to believe or not to believe?
