Send me a hundred fifty dollars and I'll be happy to Google it for you, else why should I educate you for no charge when you have Google at your own fingertips. Why would it any skin off of my ass if youre ignorant or in denial about something that most individuals of average intelligence should be fully aware of.

Why not provide a link? Why should we do your work for you, if you want to assert something, back it up or stfu... pretty simple

One example taz, there are so-called Liberals advocating in these threads the very same  sort of laws they have in Canada that effectively bars many forms of speech

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canadian_Human_Rights_Commission_free_speech_controversies

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hate_speech_laws_in_Canada

So-called Liberals (aka Leftists) in Europe have enacted similar anti speech legislation, and the gist of all the acrimony towards FOX NEWS and Coulter and Beck and Palin and Limbaugh (and so on) is a movement towards legislating away their right to speak or even killing them and harming their families.

Look up the Fairness Doctrine as well, and pay attention to the way so many so-called Liberals on these boards and elsewhere want that or other similar anti free speech laws reenacted.

Im confused... and im not being snarky. How do you see liberals breaking down free speech rights?

Typical, san... you are unwilling to do the work that is expected of people debating. As I said, you can't back up what you claim....

Cure your own ignorance julia, its not my job.

"Should" they burn the koran is the wrong question, imho.

What someone else should or shouldn't do isn't really any of my business. If the question is, "should they be allowed to burn the koran," the answer is "of course." People can burn whatever they want (unless it's someone else's property, a person, etc...).

Is it a good idea...? That's a different question.

In my opinion, the Pastor is ignorant boob who is likely enjoying his moment of fame. There are about 1.5 billion Muslims on the planet, the vast majority of whom are peaceful and not affiliated with al queda or any other violent, extremist sect. Burning the koran serves as perfect al-queda propaganda, showing the US as intolerant and Muslim-hating. An American religious leader burning the Muslim holy book is the kind of display of hatred and ignorance that has AQ leaders slapping each other on the backs and congratulating each other.

BTW, Jesus said "Love thine enemy." He never said insult, torture or kill your enemy.

juliaoceania -> RE: should they burn the quarun? (9/7/2010 12:34:04 PM)

I agree with you.... They should be allowed to burn whatever they like, but then again I think people should be able to burn the flag, too. We should have the right to exercise our free speech...

At the same time, our leaders should disavow such people as the lunatic fringe, and the rest of us should come out and say that we do not agree with their "speech". This is how a free society operates...

I cannot stand it when people burn any art or literature. I think only assholes do such things... like those fucktards that destroyed the Dixie Chicks CDs... I thought they were extremist assholes too

He has nothing left but shitbreathing drool, he is incapable of original or informed thought.

You knew that.  If there is a lie, or a catcall, he's gonna go off at the top, it isn't as if he contributes to society. He hasn't the capacity for logical thought or reason, toiletswill has more redeeming quality.

Precisely which European legislation are you thinking of there? Can you provide an example of a European law that specifically removes a right to free speech, or are you just making stuff up again?
I'd be interested to know whose talking about legislating away Beck, Palin and Limbaugh's right to talk shit on air as well. If you've got that from a single White House statement that Fox isn't really a credible news source, then that's a level of reaching that not even Reed Richards could aspire to...

FitExpDomwPic -> RE: should they burn the quarun? (9/7/2010 12:47:05 PM)

I agree, Julia.

Military leaders including Gen. Petraeus have already come out against it, and I think it would be a nice gesture for political leaders to do the same. Not try and prevent it, but just say clearly that insulting people's religious beliefs is blatantly un-American and does not reflect the sentiments of anyone except the asshole doing it.

Freedom of religion, of course, is one of the founding principles that our country was founded on.

If this guy is pissed off about 9/11, perhaps he should consider burning a Saudi flag--but he should do it in his front yard, not at his church.

Out of my own intellectual curiousity, I googled "Muslim bible burning" and only came up with one example of two 13 year old Muslims who did this, and they apologized for their behavior after saying what they did was "wrong"...

I find this completely different than a church hosting burning the Koran...

Like you said, he couldn't back what he spews so he attacks instead... silly lil San

Then try "Muslims burn bible" and "Muslims burn church". Your search abilities are lacking and finding one example of two 13 year olds should have told you to search more.

juliaoceania -> RE: should they burn the quarun? (9/7/2010 1:39:33 PM)

Um, this conversation is about book burning. If we want to look for instances of religious intolerance and buildings being burned, there is enough of that through out history on both sides. How far back did you want to go?

mnottertail -> RE: should they burn the quarun? (9/7/2010 1:43:06 PM)

muslims burn church brings me up the koran burning for the first two pages (with the exception of 1 PAKISTNI MUSLIMS burning a church.......oh, who has been on about pakistan besides me?) soooooooooo.................nothing near anything that would put more than one story together. And certainly not enough to frame an argument that THEY........

juliaoceania -> RE: should they burn the quarun? (9/7/2010 1:49:50 PM)

I found instances of churches and mosques being burned in several countries...

The question on the title of this thread is "Should they burn the Quaran". Obviously it is wrong from most points of view to burn religious books. So the next question that follows is "what should we do about it" and my answer is that people should be allowed to burn books, but that we should collectively disavow this behavior.

Burning a church or a mosque is not a freedom of speech issue, it is a crime.

I referenced the last article, which is about two 13 year old boys. I do think one should make sure they put such stories in context

from the first link

Near Faisalabad, Muslim extremists desecrated a church and burnt a Bible. Local Muslims come out in support of the devastated Christians.

From second link

He told the AP that crosses were broken, damage was done to a statue of Jesus, and at the Rosary Sister School and nearby convent, prayer books were burned.

A prayer book is not a bible... just saying.

Now I am not supportive of any of these behaviors. These are serious because they are crimes against property. These actions would be illegal in the United States...

The fact of the matter is, religious violence happens everywhere. We should denounce it, not engage in the same behavior ourselves.

This conversation reminds me of what my mom always said "If your friend jumped off a building, would you?"
