LP. If the site is revoking ALL mailing privileges because people who don't like a message and report it as spam. That IS misuse. The block feature is what helps eliminate random messages from people. You STILL will have to read and report messages wherein u don't like HOW the contacted u and report them as spam. So it's not eliminating random messages it's stopping people like the op who feel "good morning" is appropriate and it's not against the TOS to do. Yet the are going to get penalized cause u don't like their style. What's next grammar mistakes will be sent to spam cause someone doesn't LIKE that in a message?

Angel

There's a misconception there.  It doesn't happen just from a single report.  For email privileges to be effected, it has to be a number of reports.  From My understanding, then it goes to a temporary loss of initiating email.  Very much like if someone violates TOS on the forums.  For a period of time, they go under moderation and their posts are [waiting approval] until their time out is over.  It's not permanent.

My "target"? I don't understand what you intend me to accomplish. My hat is a much bigger concern.

OP,  I never had that trouble.

I have gone back and forth with a few forum posters.

:-)

The lady you are emailing.

NoirUMC -> RE: Annoyed! (10/8/2010 8:00:54 AM)

I have two problems with the system as it stands now: First, there is no way to know what, exactly, you did wrong. Second, the penalty is no linked to the crime in any meaningful way, making it easy to misunderstand what the heck is going on.

The fact that the penalty might be applied capriciously is another matter, but one most seem resolved to.

pahunkboy -> RE: Annoyed! (10/8/2010 8:04:44 AM)

Maybe you could make a 2nd profile- and that email would get thru.

crappy software?   It is everywhere.   I have no idea why this happened to you.

PS-   finding the hat will be easy- finding a lady- well that is a big task.   HA!

NoirUMC -> RE: Annoyed! (10/8/2010 8:06:24 AM)

Wouldn't I have to (publically) provide alternative contact information? I think I'll pass. Gmail's spamkiller is better than CM's, but still imperfect. :)

Lockit -> RE: Annoyed! (10/8/2010 8:09:00 AM)

NoirUMC, How many emails are you sending out?

I found what Alpha said. Here it is: Our new spam filter has been effectively stopping a large amount of anonymous mass mailing and we have not observed users who are not bulk mailing being affected.

That's not exactly true.  While your mail system won't tell you which of your emails were reported, there's a pretty good chance that you can figure out what you are doing in your patterns.  For example, if you're sending one line messages to multiple people, that's probably the issue.

It's kind of funny that you titled your thread "annoyed".  If you weren't annoying somebody, they wouldn't have reported you.

pahunkboy -> RE: Annoyed! (10/8/2010 8:10:16 AM)

I think I went up to 12 a day on some days.

NoirUMC -> RE: Annoyed! (10/8/2010 8:15:04 AM)

There is no such thing as anonymous mail here.

The definition of mass mailing seems variable here, but I have not done anything fitting any definition of it that I've seen advanced here.

"Sending mail causes the problem" is not a meaningful answer to my concern that users impacted by this are unable to know why; if sending mail is a problem, it should not be a site feature.

I'm guessing that some of those I have blocked used this feature to get some kind of revenge. The fact that blocking them was annoying seems to me to be a lousy reason for sanctions.

Lockit -> RE: Annoyed! (10/8/2010 8:18:30 AM)

Wait a minute... I remember getting email from people that had a message in red that they had been flagged as sending out spam. The mail went through. So if you can't email people, it seems like that is a second stage of things. Like you continued after the red warning to others using the site and then you were stopped because you continued to mail in mass.

pahunkboy -> RE: Annoyed! (10/8/2010 8:19:25 AM)

No.

I have 2 people blocked.   It had no effect on my email.

barelynangel -> RE: Annoyed! (10/8/2010 8:20:28 AM)

But LP they aren't violating the TOS by sending these types of messages. They are being penalized because the people rec'ing the messages don't LIKE to receive those types if messages. Preference is not TOS. So the shouldn't be penalizing people based on other members preferences. Blocking them from contacting u sure that is a applicable response because some people out there may not mind or may preference such an initiating message even though others may not. I am not saying don't block them what I am saying is since it isn't against TOS to send such a message they shouldn't be penalized because of SOME users preference not to receive that TYPE of message.

pahunkboy -> RE: Annoyed! (10/8/2010 8:20:53 AM)

Lets recap.

CM stole his bride.

NoirUMC -> RE: Annoyed! (10/8/2010 8:25:48 AM)

Again, I don't send mail "en mass." Furthermore, that message appears for the recipient--not the sender. Or, at least, I certainly never saw it. (How would I? I don't mail myself.) Perhaps there is another warning I missed? I'm using a phone, after all; the site doesn't work the same way for me.

Furthermore, consider that the reporting feature effectively allows the sanction to occur without any statute of limitations. There is no way to know how long ago you sent the offending message; if I annoyed three people last month and they logged in today, I could be penalized for it.

NoirUMC -> RE: Annoyed! (10/8/2010 8:27:17 AM)

I understand that you want to find the humor in any situation, Pahunk, but I wish you would not be disruptive while you were at it.

barelynangel -> RE: Annoyed! (10/8/2010 8:37:28 AM)

Stupid question but how do people bulk mail on the site? I never knew you could send mass emails or any emails to more than one profile at a time. If this is correct don't people actually have to have some connection with a persons profile to send a message and the y can only send to one profile at a time?

LadyPact -> RE: Annoyed! (10/8/2010 8:40:01 AM)

I think I put this up yesterday on another thread.  This is what is found on the reporting page under the spam category:  [color="#222222" size="3"]This message appears to be a solicitation mailed randomly to numerous users

My interpretation of that is that one-liners qualify.  Form letters qualify.  Messages that make it blatantly obvious that the person who wrote the email didn't read the profile qualify.  What has probably happened, OP, is that you are sending messages to multiple people who see the random "good morning" messages the same way that I do.

Lockit is also correct.  The red banner will appear that the person sending a message has been reported for spam.  This only shows up once the filter has been activated, but before email privileges have been suspended.  If that was triggered, OP, and the people you were contacting really wanted to receive the messages that you were sending, don't you think they would have mentioned it to you?

The chance that you got reported for emails that you sent over the last month and three random people all reporting them at once is pretty slim.  You could go to your "sent mail" folder to see if three people read your email all within the same hour that you sent over the last month to see if that is the case.  If that's how it happened, take a look at the content of those three mails you sent and you'll be able to determine why you got reported.

It is only possible to do one email at a time.  What a lot of people do is set the parameters on their home page (say, sub women, age 25-35, within a certain radius) and start emailing from the top of the list to the bottom.  They don't necessarily read the profiles of the twenty-five people that pop up on the list.  They just write some quick message, such as "good morning" to everybody that appears on the page.  It really doesn't take that long.  Less than a minute per profile.  If they are using copy/paste (form letter) it takes about the same amount of time as a one line message.
