The bogus drug war is certainly not helping either side of the border. But lets pretend thats not a problem and sweep it under the rug.Thats what the USA does best.

Apologies. I thought you were taking a pop at me. As it happens, I agree with you. I don't associate my views with Liberalism either.

Don't. You'll regret it.

Have you ever crossed the USA/Mex border lately? I have. An AK, or 7, in the boot WILL get noticed.

Sure. That's why the drug cartels dig tunnels from Mexico into the US. So they can smuggle drugs, guns, and human traffic back and forth across the border without having to deal with border security.

The way I see it we need to do the following, in the following order:

1. Make legal immigration less draconian / Kafkaesque so that more people who just want to come here to work can do so. This will greatly reduce the number of illegal immigrants. At that point, the only people coming in illegally will be the ones who are doing illegal business.

2. Legalize drugs. All drugs. Once there are legitimate sources of drugs for people to buy, no one will be buying from the cartels anymore. Drug laws are making these criminals rich, and they are finding all sorts of ways to move those drugs through the border. Cut off their source of revenue and watch them crumble. The tax revenue from drug sales could be pumped into Social Security and Medicare, saving them from bankruptcy.

3. Tighten Border security. Once no more people are crossing the border to look for work or run drugs, there aren't many reasons left to cross the border illegally. Once border agents are no longer spending time chasing either of those groups, they will be able to focus all of their attention on the last major group of people who may want to slip in illegally. Terrorists.

Yeah, I'm pretty much of the same mind. (Though I'm sure the drug cartels will continue in some vein of criminal activity even once their drug money is cut off. IIRC, I heard on the BBC World Service that some of them have taken to stealing oil and selling it illegaly to US companies in Texas to make up for the income they've lost to decriminalized medical marijuana cultivation in the US).

I'm also always confused with the notion that illegals are stealing our jobs, last I checked, there's nothing stopping any able bodied red blooded American from standing in front of a homedepot for day labor(I do day labor all the time)or following the migrant farmer route for close to minimum wage. Angered at illegal immigrants being employed, stop buying from those who hire them.

That's a good point. The UFW actually set up a program to help Americans get jobs as migrant farm workers. If you saw Stephen Colbert's talk to Congress he mentioned it and said that up to that date, they'd had two Americans sign up for the program. Two. Out of millions of unemployed people.

The thing is, most Americans don't want to work 80 hours a week doing hard labor in bad conditions for $6/hour and no benefits and no way for their kids to go to school. They'd rather be on welfare than that.

Stop extending unemployment benefits and see how many sign up.
