Vandals destroy Holy Thorn tree in Glastonbury

Vandals have destroyed a historic tree whose roots can be linked back to the origins of Christianity nearly 2,000 years ago.

The Holy Thorn tree on Wearyall Hill in Glastonbury, Somerset, is regarded as one of Britain's most important symbols of Christendom, and is said to be derived from the original planted by Joseph of Arimathea.

True.  Or benefit scroungers.  They're all backed by the Communists, anyway.

You Tories wouldn't know a democrat if they hit you in the ass, commies indeed.

LOL.

(I know you guys are over the pond, but you need a little american flavour in here to make it truely global and therefore inciteful (yes I used the right word) politics).

Glastonbury, isn't that where Arthur took the sword from the stone?

It's supposed to be wrapped in various Arthurian stuff, yes.  Avalon was reputedly supposed to be somewhere nearby.  But it's all legend.  I'll be going there tomorrow to meet some friends.  Pubs are good, anyway.  And the Tor's worth a visit.

The Tor?  It must be in the Danelaw, no?  I never went to that part of England while there, I would like to have seen more than I did, though.

'Glastonbury is a small town in the US state of England...'

How's that?

No. The Arthurian connection is over it being Joseph of Arimathea's first stop in the UK, so the Grail's meant to be there.
(Though what some monks insisted were his bones were exhibited there in the twelfth century.)

Glastonbury is a town in Hartford County, Connecticut, United States. The
population was 31876 at the 2000 census.

Not unless there was a part of Danelaw in the SW of England.  I thought Danelaw applied mostly to the north-east.  But this is reaching the limits of my knowledge of that period in history, I'm afraid.

I lived in Glastonbury once. I hated it. It's full of hippies, and the shops only sell quartz crystals and various takes on ornamental Arthurian swords (Arthur and his harlot spouse are apparently buried in the Abbey).

Plus, it's on a Ley-line, and the energies gave me a permanent head ache.

The monks at the abbey claimed that a couple of skeletons they had on display in eleven ninety something were Arthur and Gwenyfar, but that remains open to doubt.

On the other hand, Joseph of Arimathea's thorn tree was destroyed by the puritans after the civil war: the thing that's just got trashed is a cutting. There's supposed to be quite a few scions of the original dotted about the county, but that was the one that gets all the press.

There's another thorn tree in the Church grounds in the town. A can of petrol would be more biblical. And it would seriously freak the hippies out.

Maybe I'm wrong, but I have this suspicion that if it was one of the pagan sites that was struck by vandals, this thread would be taking a much different course.

It's interesting to note that Glastonbury is a hot-bed of Paganism. Interesting too that the symbols of Christianity in the town are often shared by the Goddess worshippers and the rest of them. An attack on the holy thorn might be viewed as an attack on spirituality.
