There is a line in a great old song that goes "Take what you want and leave the rest".  That is what I do on this site.  Hell, that is what I do in life most days.

Which is a brilliant bit of advice if you stick around long enough.

But if you are a newbie poster or someone considering doing their first post who is watching a so called 'troll' being ran out of town, you sometimes do not even get to that point.

True.  I would say that you are allowing something to affect you that doesn't mean shit in that instance too though.  If you are that sensitive, it is probably best you do not get involved with on-line drama and debate, here or anywhere else.

I have a magnet on my desk at work that says "Put your big girl panties on and deal with it".  That is what folks need to do.

And tazzy.......bite me-lol.

Ah, but then the daily mail would be outta a job[;)], just like all the posters who feel the 'need' to 'show and tell' everyone the emails they got or the previous crappy posts someone made.

Again, and apologies for repeating myself, that's only negative if someone gives a fuck what some "show and tell" loser thinks, or thinks that the majority of CM regulars can't tell when someone's doing it.

27.5 times today? Your slipping.

That should have been "you're" not "your", BTW.

<thinks>

Damn, damn, damn and a side order of damn! Got suckered in! 28.5 :(

@ RapierFugue

"All human interaction is subjective. You can't, indeed won't ever be able to, alter that."
-- EXACTLY.

so if all human interaction is subjective, why do certain people feel the need to bash others and then go rally their friends to join in on the bashing? or to deem a thread as "pointless" (which is another subjective term) and again rally their friends to hijack and derail it? =p
making rules of nicety for an internet forum would be stupid, but assuming that we're all adults and know how to behave as such doesn't seem to be working, either.
we have "common rules of decency," though -- and it seems that people are more likely to blame the victim of events like this by calling them "whiners," than they are to call out the people who engage in this type of silliness. people who speak up are branded as "whiners," and most of them simply leave the forum altogether, leaving the people who hijack, derail, attack, and snark to their own devices.

the forums on CM have gotten worse. there's a reason for that.

Like I say - I can't disagree with you... which is why threads like this rock, because we get to discuss shit like this and people can read it and go 'yeah that's right on -  I shouldn't give a fuck!'

And then there will always be me, who doesn't give a fuck that someone doesn't give a fuck and I just give a fuck anyway.[:D]

Not in my case; I'll cheerfully have a pop at either group, the whiners or the snarkers.

I'm an equal opportunities bastard :)

Hmmmmm. I'm not sure I agree, but I don't actually know if I care enough to argue the point. Apathy is a valid reaction too ;)

In any case, thinking back, I can't recall getting into a punch-up with any newbies, at least not for a very long time, so I'm not sure why I'm bothering to contribute to this thread. Boredom probably :)

I am not so sure that it is a rallying of friends, as much as it is folks who all think the "bashee" is a moron.  I think you will find, if you hang around, that some who rally together against someone one week, will be fighting like hell the next over something else.

Some subjects are thought to be idiotic by many.  Some posters are thought to be idiotic by many.  Same applies to "coolness".  It really just is what it is, and in the long run. it don't mean a thing.

RC&dc,

(thinks about that ..) as being in my clique would probably give you a bad reputation and make you an outcast.  I am only thinking of you when i say no.

LillyBoPeep -> RE: Is CM really good for newcomers? (1/8/2011 7:24:58 AM)

i only say "rallying" because i've seen people do it. =p one person pops into a thread, drops a "snark bomb," then goes to another thread and says "look how silly this is!" and links to it. =p that's a pretty fair description of a rally, i think.
i was active on this forum fairly regularly several years ago, under a different screen name.

some things ARE genuinely silly to a lot of people, yes, but not all bashfests begin by accident. =p

At least you've got an excuse! I'm like Snow White today* but I can't summon the desire to do any of them. So I'm just tapping disinterestedly away at a report that is trying to find a polite way of saying "your idea's shit coz you're a fuckwit", without using either of the words "shit" and "fuckwit", and posting to CM.

*there's lots of little things I'm supposed to be doing
