I been thinking.   Why do people who ride horses not wear seat belts?   And bike riders?    Even pogo sticks- should have a strap on device.

If you need a seat belt to stay on a horse, you have no business riding one.

Because depending on what you're doing, you are frequently standing up in your stirrups and a seat belt would prevent that. Watch the show jumping next Summer Olympics and you'll see what I mean.

However handicapped riders doing therapeutic riding are frequently strapped in.

Maybe some heavy duty velcro would work.

Because, in an accident on either, you're much, much better off away from the object, rather than sticking with it.
A car offers cage-derived protection, a horse or bike just offers more entertaining ways to get yourself crushed.

All of the above.

As someone who has taken my fair share of spills involving horses, you don't want to be on it when they roll.
How you think of these things is way beyond me......maybe you need to get out more?

My anaesthetist for my last major op, post-bike crash, (a biker himself) surprised me when I asked why he wasn't giving the usual "bikes are bad" speech.

His response? "I'm a biker. I get to not hassle bikers. I could hassle horse riders, coz they have fewer upper limb fractures than bikers, but do much worse on lower limb and pelvic fractures. It's great - my wife rides horses, and she has to stay quiet whenever I go out on my bike. And I know it nearly kills her to do so" :)

*shudder*

Of course, if you can't get your girth tight enough to avoid that happening (or have someone who can do it for you if you're a small child or disabled), you shouldn't be riding.

I really prefer bareback too.  It's a lot more comfortable, and I find I have better balance without so much leather under me.  Saddles give a false sense of security - if you can't balance you can't balance, and you're just as likely to fall out of a saddle as off a bare back.
