No guys, I've been tossed from a horse who ended up rolling....the girth was fine, he tripped in a hole that neither one of us saw.  I've been riding for years and know all about getting the tack on right.  I'm also pretty good at curling up in midair and rolling when I hit the ground.

Unfortunately, RF, I've had friends who have ended up with head and neck injuries from getting tossed, I myself fractured my skull going over the shoulder of a horse.  Worst case scenario is Christopher Reeves.  The only other spill I took I got stepped on after the horse was trying to outrun 3 dogs who ran deer, so turning towards the dogs didn't help drive them off.  The horse turned right, I went off, and then the horse turned back left.....he stepped on my chest, but not with his full weight, hit me in the right cheek with a hoof, and the only saving graces were that I was in a freshly plowed field so it was a fairly soft landing, and I was wearing my helmet so I got kicked on the helmet and not in the head.  I've only had the three spills, but they were good ones!

My man was only quoting the odds of injury in various places.

What he was trying to say, and maybe I didn't make this clear enough, is that the general public think horse riding is "safe" and bike riding is "dangerous", and they couldn't be more wrong.

I know...he was running hell bent for leather right for the road to get home....as it was, he stepped on the reins and ripped the bridle all to hell.  I was afraid he'd fall or get hurt.  Or that he'd get hit by a car....you know how people drive on those country roads.

Oh, did you mean for me?  Nah, like I said, I tucked and rolled, just didn't expect him to zig back.  He saw he was going to step on me and did some sort of little skip step when he put his foot down.  I just came out of it with the bruise on my cheek.....took some flak at work for it....I just otld them the other guy looked worse!

i have seen a few fractured pelvises and crushed legs.

The only time i was thrown was face first onto a red-dog road (lots and lots of gravel).

No hun, I knew what you meant about the injuries.  That's why everyone was so surprised when Christopher ended up paralyzed.  But if you've ever watched the Olympics, watching some of those spills are worse than watching morotcyles spills.  Makes me cringe every time!  At least with the bike racing, you have all that protective gear!  And generally, most bike riders do too.  On a horse, the most you'll wear is the helmet, and not too many people wear them unless they are in the show ring......I've never been dumped showing, just pleasure riding.

As for bareback vs saddle, I prefer the saddle, but I use an English one where I can.  It's smaller and less cumbersome than a western saddle.  The fall I took  when I fractured my skull could have been prevented if I'd been wearing a saddle.....I was bareback and had nothing but the horse's mane to grab onto.  Came out with a handful of hair.....not too effective at slowing my airspeed!  My cousin said I did a perfect one and a half gainer before slamming into the ground and sliding 10 feet on my face!  It was summer time, so we were in shorts, I was in a tank top and barefoot.  Was picking gravel out of my arm for two weeks!

I been thinking.   Why do people who ride horses not wear seat belts?   And bike riders?    Even pogo sticks- should have a strap on device.

Ever seen a person drug to death behind a spooked horse? There you go.

When a bike goes down it usually does on its side. Now a rider being strapped an 800 pound bike while it slides is not likely to be able to free the trapped leg that's under the bike. Results? Leg looks like person drug by horse. Lots of things are the way they are for a reason.

My best was riding a 3 year old, barely green broke mare in an english saddle that I had just bought at auction. As we went up a hill, she spooked at a soft breeze, grabbed the bit,  and was suddenly running hell bent for leather up the trail. As I passed my friend and her horse, doing approximately mach 2, I heard her say, "she'll stop at the gate"....

... GATE???? Yup, a nice big metal cattle gate with a barbed wire top. As we approached it at a full gallop, my right stirrup let go. I had checked it, the metal fitting holding the leather broke. Rocket mare spun on her right hind at the last second, squirting between the gate and a line of t- posts (did I mention that this was an arab?) At that point, clinging to her side, I decided that the pasture was looking pretty inviting and bailed. My friend swears that I called out "chocolate chip?*" as I hit the grass face first, leaving a divot about 4 feet long.

*'chocolate chip' is a reference to the fact that my friends and I had long since decided that anyone who got thrown or bailed had to make cookies for everyone else as soon as the bruises faded.

Why do people who ride horses not wear seat belts?

Because being strapped to a living thing weighing 800-1500lbs that has its own mind and can spook and run into traffic, trip and fall on you, or deliberately roll on you is not a good idea.
quote:

And bike riders?

Because being trapped under a bike in a crash with no way to separate yourself from the machine is a great way to get your leg ripped off or your torso crushed.

Horses and bikes are not cars. There is no metal cage around you.
Seriously Hunk, did you actually stop to think before posting this question?

*shudder*

Of course, if you can't get your girth tight enough to avoid that happening (or have someone who can do it for you if you're a small child or disabled), you shouldn't be riding.

I have an image in my mind of my daughter sliding off her horse and onto the ground, still in the saddle. The cinch broke. Her horse stood there and looked at her with contempt obviously thinking that humans are stupid.

But yeah, if a horse throws you, he could well be angry enough to stomp on you. Pelvis or head. You want to be as far away from him then as possible.

Wrong. Yet again.

Is there any subject on which you're not 100% clueless? Do you ever bother to check a single "fact"?

Is it just the U.S., or all of North America?  If you ride across the border from Canada to the States, will it suddenly go crazy and buck you off?  Are horses just as tough in Hawaii, or does the distance from the continental U.S. weaken them?  Are horses is Puerto Rico half as tough as U.S. horses, or twice as tough as European ones?

All of the Americas.    The horses are tougher then European, Asian, African,  tho possibly tied with OZ types.

I wonder if Hunky is comfusing "horse" with "whores".  I can believe that U.S. whores are wilder and tougher than elsewhere.  I can also believe that Hunky has some experience with whores, but it's clear that he has none with horses.
