Maybe because their teachers are so fucking stupid that they write a blog about their jobs and students and assume that it is not going to be seen....She should be fired for stupidity

That's right. How dare she suggest those lazy little punks are lazy. Better we should boost their little egos, than try and teach them to be responsible adults.

Yeah we should belittle kids at every opportunity. It's not like calling a child stupid. dumb, lazy etc. would have any effect on the child.

Ah the traditional liberal lack of reading comprehension on display. I do see why the left is adamant that the status quo remains in our failing schools.

dk, exactly which child did she call dumb stupid or lazy? answer...none. That was made clear in the article.

So teachers have no right to post freely on blogs.....

Seriously, all you guys agree that online postings (no names, no identifying the school or district) are reasons to be punished??

Really?

Hows about we put a majority of the blame where it belongs, lets start with the PARENTS.  Parents don't do their job, and expect the schools to do it for them.  The teacher has your kid seven or eight hours a day five days a week, 35 to 40 hours total.  There are 168 hours in a 7 day week, who is failing to do their job for those extra 128 to 133 hours a week?  Sure lets blame the teachers, and the schools.  Give me a fucking break.

Parentally,
Some Knucklehead in NJ

Hows about we realize this is not the 1950's.

You have parents who both have to work to make ends meet.

I'm sure most would like to devote more time to their children but are unable to.

Realistically,
Some knucklehead not in NJ.

If people who are potential parents arent able to raise their kids, then dont fucking HAVE them in the first place.

No, let them breed like rabbits and depend on someone else to raise them.

Then, when the government employees dont raise your kids to your specifications, SUE the bastards.

Also - prioritize. What's more important, raising your children or two expensive cars, big screen TVs, expensive vacations, etc?

KenDckey -> RE: Don't criticize the educatonal system or students (2/16/2011 12:10:35 PM)

So it seems that there are few things that we see in common here.

1 - you have the right to speak freely and exercise your first amendment rights as long as it isn't about work because they have the right to determine what you do off duty?

2 - you have the right to speak freely and exercise your first amendment rights as long as it doesn't say anything about parental responsibility

3 - you have the right to speak freely and exercise your first amendment rights as long as it doesn't criticize a student because they have no responsibility in what or how much they learn in school

Well maybe not everyone agrees (myself included) but that seems to me to be the general consensus.   Don't you love it?

While she may not have singled out a child, this is completely unprofessional:

"My students are out of control," Munroe, who has taught 10th, 11th and 12th grades, wrote in one post. "They are rude, disengaged, lazy whiners. They curse, discuss drugs, talk back, argue for grades, complain about everything, fancy themselves entitled to whatever they desire, and are just generally annoying."

And in another post, Munroe — who is more than eight months pregnant — quotes from the musical "Bye Bye Birdie": "Kids! They are disobedient, disrespectful oafs. Noisy, crazy, sloppy, lazy LOAFERS."

She also listed some comments she wished she could post on student evaluations, including: "I hear the trash company is hiring"; "I called out sick a couple of days just to avoid your son"; and "Just as bad as his sibling. Don't you know how to raise kids?"

luckydawg -> RE: Don't criticize the educatonal system or students (2/16/2011 12:16:03 PM)

Kendcky.

The article clearly says the teacher did not crticize a student. Only generally criticized students.

If the teacher called out a specific student with insults, the teacher should be not only fired, but sued and fined. It would be very serious.

But it didn't happen.

And actually a lot of employers have policies that you can not bad mouth your company off time, but she did not name the school or district. Or use her full name.

What she said seems to coincide with conservative memes, so a bunch of leftists want her punished.

luckydawg -> RE: Don't criticize the educatonal system or students (2/16/2011 12:19:05 PM)

kalikama, is what you post on here professional?

Should your postings be judged by your employer?

There is nothing wrong at all with a teacher commenting on the state of education.

Didn't give her name.
Didn't identify the district or school.
Didn't identify any students.

What is the problem?

My postings are unrelated to my profession.

She must have used some identifier, as she was outed.

http://www.phillyburbs.com/news/news_details/article/28/2011/february/10/blog-puts-teacher-in-hot-water.html

The Pennsylvania State Education Association advises teachers to “be careful and thoughtful about the information (they) share (online), and with whom (they) share it.”

“Each time you post a photograph or information on the web, make sure you would gladly show it to the following people: Your mother. Your students. Your superintendent. The editor of The New York Times,” the PSEA tells teachers on its web site. “Even though the First Amendment protects your speech as a private citizen on matters of public concern, that speech may fall outside of First Amendment protection if it ‘impedes your employer’s effectiveness or efficiency, or otherwise disrupts the workplace.’ Avoid posting anything on your profile page about your colleagues, administrators, or students, as well as using inappropriate or profane messages or graphics, or anything that would reflect negatively on your workplace.”

Fellow -> RE: Don't criticize the educatonal system or students (2/16/2011 12:57:45 PM)

I think the teacher should quit or be laid off. She is frustrated, blames the job conditions for her shortcomings. Everybody who has attended high school remembers that in some classes there was order, students working, and in others, students were "lazy and whining".  The phenomenon was directly caused by a respect/disrespect towards a teacher. The only way to help the teacher would be to give her some time to think about her profession.

joether -> RE: Don't criticize the educatonal system or students (2/16/2011 2:09:44 PM)

The human brain, medically speaking, does not fully develop until the individual is at the age of 30 (female) to 32 (male). By what is typically the 'high school ages', anyone of those pre-adult's brains have not even begone to be fully developed. What we call 'wisdom', is really the brain's ability to harness 'good' and 'bad' judgements. Going down path A, while quicker is dangerous but path B is safer but will take longer. The individual person will not stop and think of that arguement at that age; rather they will base their decision on whether they are more adventuresome or not. Impulsive attitudes are more pronounced at this age, then in later ages.

Most people just dont understand that.

That is something you learn when pursuing a degree in education (or childhood psychology); understanding how to communicate with today's young people. The idea, is to give them challenges at their level that gives their minds a foundation of what is 'acceptable' and 'unacceptable' behavior. For the most part it is to prepare them for many of life's challenges, but is by no means, expected to train for specific challenges. If the young adult is seeking college, give them a taste of what is expected. If its the USMC, put them through some real physical stress. And if they are unsure, point them in a few directions and see which one fits. It really is tough to educate young adults. Most educators simply give what is published in their school's ideas for each grade level. Exceptional teachers will go beyond that point.

With regards to the article, there really isn't enough information to properly decide who is at fault. People are blaming their 'pet peeves' for the situtation, irrelevent of the facts known. We do not have any idea what the true attitudes, behaviors and demeanors of this teacher's charges are really like (or of the teacher herself). Not one of us on these forums can state "I know each and every one of her charges personally and....". Likewise, maybe her charges really are unholy terrors and she's just being 'nice' compared to how she really feels about the young adults. The question within this article is: Does she have a point or a decent arguement?

luckydawg -> RE: Don't criticize the educatonal system or students (2/16/2011 2:10:17 PM)

kali, to me the General State of students and the educational process falls under “Even though the First Amendment protects your speech as a private citizen on matters of public concern"

and I don't think that the Teachers Union (PSEA) makes the law, though I do get that Leftists would think so.

And they want people punished for blogs...

luckydawg -> RE: Don't criticize the educatonal system or students (2/16/2011 2:14:08 PM)

I disagree Joether.

"The question within this article is: Does she have a point or a decent arguement? "

The question is whether she has the freedom to make the argument she chooses (without identifying the school, district, any students or herself) without fear of punishment.

Liberals used to say they were in favor of free speech.....

10th - 12th graders are hardly in that age group of what I would consider a "child".

Child can refer to intellectual development too, in which case "child" can certainly apply to .....how old are you and Lucy?

Thats just fucking creepy coming from someone calling themselves **** daddy*

I'll bet there's more than meets the eye here.   Snarking generally about students online doesn't seem that a reason to fire anybody - not even if their precious self-esteem takes a hit.   By high school, they should be able to know if the shoe fits.

Liberals and thier fake quotes....rather sad.

Without lying they seem to have nothing to say.....

Lucylastic -> RE: Don't criticize the educatonal system or students (2/16/2011 5:56:47 PM)

Mine  was a question not a statement,  did you notice that? at the end?
No matter how you call it its not a lie
coming from a liar like you tho, who cant remember one lie to another its an expected  response .

luckydawg -> RE: Don't criticize the educatonal system or students (2/16/2011 6:02:07 PM)

Perhaps you were not lying and are just too stupid to know what Quotation Marks mean.

I could accept that.

I expressed an opinion that her posts were unprofessional. I have not entered the free speech debate or taken a stand on consequences.

I quoted what the PSEA advises, and did not express an opinion about it. I am very interested to see how this shakes out - if the school fires her, if she sues, and the result of that lawsuit. I have no dog in this fight.

I don't understand why you're going on about liberals.

luckydawg -> RE: Don't criticize the educatonal system or students (2/16/2011 7:22:25 PM)

To me it seems declaring others have the right to judge the professionalism of her web postings(not full name, no identifying district or school or any Students), is a statement that its not free speech (it can be judged).

I didn't realise that your posting of Teacher's Union policy had no relevance at all.

Sorry you don't understand why politics is a subject in Politics and Religion. 5 partisans came out one one side of this.

Marini -> RE: Don't criticize the educatonal system or students (2/16/2011 8:03:53 PM)

Hell as long as she did not name anyone, or make personal comments that would lead you to know who she was talking about, so what??

She needs to learn to be a more anonymous blogger and move on.

People in all professions complain: doctors, nurses, cops, medics, everyone complains about the asswipes they deal with.

The point should be, is what she is saying TRUE????
People should be more appalled if what she is saying is true. Why shoot the messenger?
Its like the kids that are bad, mean, nasty and rude demons, and when the parent is called, the parent wants to blame the school.

Are they really that unmotivated and lazy????

Is it because she called the little precious angels, names?
lol
I am glad she was not fired, and those that are upset, get over yourself.

Power to the teachers!! She bangs!
