I would be curious to find out how others knew about her blog if she never mentioned her name, the school or the students by name.

I am really laughing tazzy.

All we hear is how terrible the school system IS, and teachers are ALWAYS being criticized, but gosh fucking forbid, we dare say anything is wrong with the students.

hahahahahahahahahahahahhaa
weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee

tazzygirl -> RE: Don't criticize the educatonal system or students (2/16/2011 8:18:43 PM)

lol.. i so know how you feel.

But, honestly, if she never mentioned any names, or facts... nor her own name... how did others discover the blog?

luckydawg -> RE: Don't criticize the educatonal system or students (2/16/2011 8:23:11 PM)

tazzy, the article says that it was for her "friends" and family.
There is almost always a rat that finds out about something, maybe one of her friends was not really her friend?

Like Ben Franklin said, 3 people can keep a secret as long as 2 are dead.
I guess as usual, her friends aint dead.

I don't think she should be penalized for exercising her right to speak her mind...the school board is wrong. End of discussion...end of story.

You might have had something intelligent to add, but I have had enough of the bigots on this board, so I couldn't get past your first sentence.

It wouldn't be hard if someone was looking for it. She used her real first name and last initial (gotta say, stupid), and many of her entries were about other parts of her life. She quite possibly mentioned her town in a completely unrelated post, and that was enough. 'Natalie' isn't a very common name, and if you add 'Natalie M', teacher, and the town, a search might take you right to her blog.

It's quite possible that, as an English teacher, she mentioned blogging to her students during a class. People being people, kids or not, maybe one or more of her students got curious. Say what you want about today's kids (my own opinions may be posted later, or on another topic), but one thing they are damned good at is following clues on the 'innerwebz'.

That said, what she posted about the canned responses on report cards reminded me very much of this:

As someone who recently graduated from High school ( in the last 3 years) GOOD FOR HER...Rock on and call those lazy whiny brats What they are.

It sucks to be told the truth, but the point is, even in Well run Well respected classrooms there was still this crap going on, Its sad. The things I had to deal with makes what she said very tame to the things I blogged about as a student.

myotherself -> RE: Don't criticize the educatonal system or students (2/17/2011 12:28:30 AM)

As a high school teacher in the UK, I totally sympathise with the blogger, but I also think she wasn't correct in doing what she did. Certainly blog about what you do without identifying the students, but don't use your own name or your home town. We have an author here in the UK called 'Frank Chalk' who blogs about his time in teaching. He talks about students and schools without identifying them, and very few people have a clue who he is. This teacher should have been aware that what she was doing was not right, and spent more time anonymising her details.

But on a more personal note, I have a bit of a reputation for being honest with my students and their parents. I have been known to say to students that I'm prepared to discuss an issue, but not to be whined at. In fact, some of the kids know that phrase so well they finish the sentence for me, lol

At a recent parent's evening I had one 16 year old student and his parent come to see me. Mum asked why her son was being entered for a lower exam, and not the higher exam. I explained that there was no chance of him passing the higher exam, and that he would probably only do moderately well in the lower exam.

She was not happy, and asked me if I thought her son was stupid. I said he was absolutely not stupid, but sadly he was lazy. He refused to work during the lesson, never did homework, never came to detentions when given, wandered in an hour late to some lessons, left early because he 'couldn't be bothered'.

Quite rightly, she asked why she hadn't been told this. So I showed her my log of phone calls to her home (over a dozen in the space of a fortnight), and the copies of the eight letters I'd sent, requesting she get in touch. Turns out sonny had been erasing phone messages and intercepting the mail. And yet it was still MY fault that I couldn't contact her.

Sometimes you can't win...

Hell as long as she did not name anyone, or make personal comments that would lead you to know who she was talking about, so what??

She needs to learn to be a more anonymous blogger and move on.

People in all professions complain: doctors, nurses, cops, medics, everyone complains about the asswipes they deal with.

The point should be, is what she is saying TRUE????
People should be more appalled if what she is saying is true. Why shoot the messenger?
Its like the kids that are bad, mean, nasty and rude demons, and when the parent is called, the parent wants to blame the school.

Are they really that unmotivated and lazy????

Is it because she called the little precious angels, names?
lol
I am glad she was not fired, and those that are upset, get over yourself.

Power to the teachers!! She bangs!

Of course the parents blame the school. They also blame video games, music videos, Judas Priest, television, books, sports figures...anything they can. And after this post they will come on here and blame me for not understanding. They will lash out at me in unison for daring to hold them accountable for their children when I have none of my own!

But it's very true that the average high school teenagers are exactly what this teacher describes. I hate teenagers. They are products of a society that tells them their whole life what special little treasures they are, that can't be disciplined or have their feelings hurt. They are given the freedoms of an adult, but without any accountability or responsibility.

A high school English teacher in suburban Philadelphia who was suspended for a profanity-laced blog in which she called her young charges "disengaged, lazy whiners" is driving a sensation by daring to ask: Why are today's students unmotivated — and what's wrong with calling them out?

This may be unpopular. i think students are probably unmotivated because of their upbringing.

There's nothing wrong with calling them out- anonymously. Call them a bunch of lazy, disengaged whiners. Just don't give your name, or any information that could be used to identify you or the school. She asked for trouble and she got it.

Maybe i'm clueless. i'm not known for my computer savvy. But how can you "blog" just for you friends? If it's on the internet, then anyone can read it, right? i think "blogging" for your friends and family is called email. And if THAT had happened, if she had written a private email and was getting in trouble for it, i would think differently about the situation.

So it seems that there are few things that we see in common here.

1 - you have the right to speak freely and exercise your first amendment rights as long as it isn't about work because they have the right to determine what you do off duty?

2 - you have the right to speak freely and exercise your first amendment rights as long as it doesn't say anything about parental responsibility

3 - you have the right to speak freely and exercise your first amendment rights as long as it doesn't criticize a student because they have no responsibility in what or how much they learn in school

Well maybe not everyone agrees (myself included) but that seems to me to be the general consensus.   Don't you love it?

I'll go with:

4. You have the right to speak freely and exercise your first amendment rights, namely that Congress won't pass a law to limit your speech. This does not mean you are completely shielded from all repercussions of your speech, including the disapproval of your employer.

Maybe because their teachers are so fucking stupid that they write a blog about their jobs and students and assume that it is not going to be seen....She should be fired for stupidity

That's right. How dare she suggest those lazy little punks are lazy. Better we should boost their little egos, than try and teach them to be responsible adults.

Yeah we should belittle kids at every opportunity. It's not like calling a child stupid. dumb, lazy etc. would have any effect on the child.

10th - 12th graders are hardly in that age group of what I would consider a "child".

And that is part of the problem. People don't think of them as children when they are.....

tazzygirl -> RE: Don't criticize the educatonal system or students (2/17/2011 7:40:05 AM)

we need to prtoect a 17 year old from being told the truth because their egos are that fragile????

They why in the hell are we sending them to college and to war???

DomYngBlk -> RE: Don't criticize the educatonal system or students (2/17/2011 7:52:05 AM)

Well where do you cut it off then tazzy. what age do you think that kids are actually kids

Jeffff -> RE: Don't criticize the educatonal system or students (2/17/2011 7:57:04 AM)

At what age do you expect people to earn their rewards.

At what age do you stop giving everyone a gold star for their self esteem?

If everyone "makes the team" how does anyone learn to persevere.
