http://news.yahoo.com/video/miamicbs4-15750840/teacher-criticized-for-how-she-sent-a-note-home-24445195

Good grief, this mother is mad and angry and demands an apology because she claims her 2nd grader was humiliated because the teacher stapled a note to his shirt explaining to his mother he was talking in class.

I seriously ask you -- how did most of us survive being a kid?  THIS is what a mother gets mad about and goes TO THE NEWS about nowadays?  Hell, while my mom may have been irritated at the stapling the shirt (which this teacher offered to replace), the teacher would not have been in trouble,  I WOULD HAVE BEEN for talking so much in class the teacher felt it necessary to send a note home to my parents.  I don't care if its second grade or not.  I don't care what it was, there was no way in hell i wanted ANY notes going home from school.

Sorry but to me this bid for attention from this mother is ridiculous and i don't blame the school board for its response.  Hell, i remember when we were "humiliated" or openly "punished" in school that the other kids saw and yes sometimes laughed at you for getting in trouble.  What is this world coming too when a mother goes to the NEWS to bitch because her kid had a NOTE stapled to his shirt because she hasn't taught him that he needs to be quiet and LISTEN to the authority of the TEACHER in school rather than talking so much a note to her gets sent home.

Again, good grief.

To be honest, stapling a note to a kids shirt is stupid.

barelynangel -> RE: OMG -- How did we ever survive being a kid (3/8/2011 5:42:53 PM)

The stapling isn't an issue with this parent so other than the staple, why?  Kids got notes pinned to their shirts all the time when i was a kid, especially in 1st and 2nd grade or if the teacher didn't think the kid was giving the notes to the parents.

Outside of the shirt may be ruined -- again which the teacher offered to replace -- its stupid why?  Hell even that would have had me in trouble because if i hadn't been running my mouth so much that the teacher had to send a note home, my shirt wouldn't have been ruined.

Perhaps you and this mother are a different breed of parents.

The worst I ever got in school as a kid was a firm yelling or they would talk to my parents about my inability to leave the girls alone.

I am pretty sure if a teacher who teaches such an early grade with young kids is heard that they grabbed a kid and stapled a note to their shirt it is grounds for very nasty legal action.

You're right, I would be a different breed of a parent.  If you touch my kid, I'll make your life a living Hell.  I would hope any parent would do that for their child, especially in this context.

maybemaybenot -> RE: OMG -- How did we ever survive being a kid (3/8/2011 5:52:10 PM)

LOL !

My first grade teacher had a blue baby bottle with a yellow ribbon tied around it. If we misbehaved, we had to wear the baby bottle around our necks for the day. To lunch, to recess, to music class whereever the day took you.

My second grade teacher had a sign we had to wear if we spoke out of turn or without raising our hand in class. It said " I was a naughty boy/girl today and spoke in class.

I can only imagine if those tactics were used today, the outcry of the emotional damage to the child.

But.... i can only recall one or two kids that had to wear the bottle or sign, and only once. It was a very effective deterant and kept class orderly. NO ONE wanted to have to deal with either of those things. I also remember my own parents and my friends parents supporting the teacher, when we came home and told them about it.

That isn't everyone, thank God.

My teachers and mentors all know that they have my parents' permission to beat the snot out of me if its ever necessary, and they always have.

But thats not as bad as what happened at my high school.... One of the teachers actually THREW a stapler at a kid.... missed, and hit the one behind him. There was no news. There was no lawsuit. The teacher quietly retired (it was her time anyways).

barelynangel -> RE: OMG -- How did we ever survive being a kid (3/8/2011 6:03:44 PM)

Umm what legal grounds would that be?  There are no legal grounds, you are dramaticizing by using words like GRAB -- no where does it state the teacher GRABBED the kid. I would imagine she probably didn't even touch the kid other than to pull the shirt so she could staple it.  So sorry but no, you have no legal action here other than bitching to the news and dramatic outcry because a teacher had to discipline your child because the child acted out in class.

Maybemaybenot lol no kidding.  I was thinking that - i bet this kid will now be quiet when told too.  And the emotional issue of this whole thing is the BIG TADO mom is making of it.  My second grade teacher made us stand at a blackboard and reach a line drawn on it IN FRONT OF THE WHOLE CLASS lol.  My 4th grade teacher had a sign of whatever you did you had to wear until the end of the day even outside and on recess and you had to have your parents sign it and return it.

I hate to say it but with attitudes like this mother, no wonder the schools have the discipline problems they do.  Oh yeah, and parents supported the teachers back then.

You have given me a headache, you should feel guilty.

frazzle -> RE: OMG -- How did we ever survive being a kid (3/8/2011 6:05:51 PM)

I'm so glad i didnt go to schools you did.

Do you realy think humiliating/embarrassing children is effective????

I didnt read the link, i dont need too.

As a parent, i'd have been livid.

rick1283 -> RE: OMG -- How did we ever survive being a kid (3/8/2011 6:12:48 PM)

As a second grader, I wouldn't have cared either way. I would have given the note to my parents and been scolded. Big whoop. In fact, I remember doing that plenty of times. It did work, though.

frazzle -> RE: OMG -- How did we ever survive being a kid (3/8/2011 6:16:01 PM)

Given a note to give to parents is totally diferent to having one stapled to clothing.

NocturnalStalker -> RE: OMG -- How did we ever survive being a kid (3/8/2011 6:18:58 PM)

If you ask me, that teacher shouldn't even be a teacher if they go to that extreme.

maybemaybenot -> RE: OMG -- How did we ever survive being a kid (3/8/2011 6:19:20 PM)

Listening to the video link: Mommy says the child was embarassed and humiliated, yet the child says he was angry and mad.

So which was it.... humiliated or angry ? I'll take the kids word... angry... kids that age tend to be truthful about these types of things. And it's OK for a kid to be angry, good parenting involves teaching the child how to handle their anger.. not feed it.

No, they were stapled to my shirt half the time. I still could have taken it off before they saw it, but I didn't

pyroaquatic -> RE: OMG -- How did we ever survive being a kid (3/8/2011 6:31:03 PM)

A note certainly triumphs having to kneel on rice or a raised piece of wood.

Odd, I would have simply called the parents.

barelynangel -> RE: OMG -- How did we ever survive being a kid (3/8/2011 6:31:20 PM)

Frazzle, Yeah be livid because your kid had a note stapled to his shirt, nevermind that he was sooo disruptive in class that the teacher felt it necessary to do this and nevermind the what 30-40 other kids in the class whose ability to learn was disrupted by your kid.  I guess that doesn't matter, what matters is YOUR kid and his discipline rather than his actions that caused it in the first place and the lack of respect he had for the teacher and the students in the class.

Perhaps the teacher should have gone to the news instead of simply sending a note home on his shirt and been angry and upset at how the child disrupted the class and how the parents are failing at discipining their kids.  Bet you would have thought that was silly of the teacher.

Perhaps the mother shouldn't be teaching her kid to have a meltdown over a little embarrassment.

peachgirl -> RE: OMG -- How did we ever survive being a kid (3/8/2011 6:33:40 PM)

I don't think you can really get a good idea of how you'd react unless you are actually a parent. I would have loved to staple some mouths shut in my UMs 2nd grade class. they were disobedient, disrespectful, made terrible "threats" ("I'm going to break into your house and kill your baby sister") and of course their parents all thought they were angels.

frazzle -> RE: OMG -- How did we ever survive being a kid (3/8/2011 6:38:31 PM)

As it happens, my child wouldnt have disrupted a class. he actually left more than 1 to fetch me due to the teacher allowing others to spit on him, throw things at him etc.

teachers arent perfect, neither are parents.

i did find that talking to a child and asking why, works better than humiliating them.

Lockit -> RE: OMG -- How did we ever survive being a kid (3/8/2011 6:41:13 PM)

This is why I stopped working with children. Stupid parents that get more mad at how someone must deal with their child and what they might be forced to do rather than what is best for the child in learning how they are to act in public, in school and how to grow up responsible.

Most kids... hell, for that matter, most people will get mad when faced with someone calling them on their action, no matter how that is done and will be mad until that mad passes. Any parent that cannot see the behavior of their child is more important, as well as the interrupted education process for said child and others around them... isn't a very good parent. The child was not harmed and if angry... even embarrassed... he might actually make sure that never happens again. I would have given the teacher kudos, for actually helping my child and me as parent to that child. If that is all it takes to wig a child out... there was something already much bigger, wrong. Most likely mommy.

barelynangel -> RE: OMG -- How did we ever survive being a kid (3/8/2011 6:45:02 PM)

Well you know what, on many levels a teacher is responsible for being a babysitter, a social worker, a nursemaid, a disciplinarian, a cop and many times a third parent.   I would have thought that this kid continuous talking wouldn't need a teacher stopping the class all the time to ask why why why.  It should be enough that the teacher tell the kid to settle down and be quiet.   Somehow i don't think this kid was being spit on or throw things at him or the mother would have been bitching about THAT on the news.  And the WHY's usually many times are what the PARENTS should be asking, because in a course of the day, i don't believe the teachers always have time to ask why.  You know they are there to do a job they don't have a lot of time to do and they have a lot of kids to deal with.

The fact of the matter is  sometimes a little embarrassment is not this BIG TADO that people make it out to be and parents can teach their children how to deal with it instead of teaching them to have a meltdown.  I am sure in the course of his life THIS will be the LEAST of the ackward, embarrassing situations he deals with and because his mom is teaching him to have a MELTDOWN and go to the news and tell even more people about it, he will be well equipped to deal with future issues of embarrassment and such.
