That said, you're comparing apples to oranges. The FDA creates guidelines, while the UL verifies that products meet guidelines. I consider the UL to be a compliance agency - they're not concerned about consumer protection as much as whether products meet set guidelines, and consider the guidelines themselves to protect the consumer. Huh? They both create guidelines and they both test compliance with them. However, nitpicking over specific roles just avoids the main point...a private company that fulfills the exact same functions as the FDA would be far better than having them do it. and it isnt "outside the box" in the least. Privatization of functions the Feds have proven they are incapable of handling should BE the box.
