ORIGINAL: jlf1961 Actually, I think they just want the poor, old and disabled to die. My point is simple, NONE of the Republican cuts involve defense spending, in fact they want to INCREASE it. Instead, republicans want to gut education spending, we have fallen from number one in the 70's to number 14 in 2010. So yeah, lets cut education. Sanity you have implied that we need to fear China, well the Chinese education system has been steadily improving while ours is declining, so I guess it makes sense to cut Education. Okay, the Federal Government has stuck approximately 2.2 TRILLION dollars in the social Security fund as IOU's for money it has used elsewhere. The government borrows surpluses from the Social Security trust fund and replaces that with treasury bonds. While interest is being paid on those "LOANS" the interest hardly meets the total needed for people paying into the system for their retirement and those already on Social Security, which means the trust fund is going to end up going broke, simply because the government cannot afford to pay back the 2.2 trillion it has borrowed. As it was originally designed, social security would have been self supporting if it had not been raided like some fucking piggy bank. Thus, the actual move would be not to cut social security spending, but not pay back the money into the system the government has already borrowed. By the way, China owns a large portion of the US debt carried internationally. That was do to a REPUBLICAN administration going to them for loans, after cutting taxes to stimulate job growth, which the cuts DID NOT DO. Now, what should those who depend on Medicaid and Medicare do? By the way, some people on Medicare are also on a medicaid supplement plan. I cant get that because my social security pay is too high. But then it is not high enough to pay my monthly expenses AND pay for a supplemental medicare plan, so I am thoroughly fucked. I could give up the house I have been paying on for a number of years and default on the mortgage, but then that is what other "deadbeats" did causing the bank crisis. Besides, I am past the break even point, I actually owe less than the house and property is worth, but I cant sell it for what it is worth because the housing market sucks, so I guess I could sell it at a loss, let some other poor fool get in over their head. By the way Sanity, as you grow older, your immune system weakens, pretty soon you will be in the same boat as some of the people who are going to suffer because of the cuts proposed, maybe you have good insurance, but you know, if the Health Care Reform bill is repealed, should you get old and sick, your insurance carrier will be legally allowed to drop you as "TOO EXPENSIVE." That will leave you the choice of MEDICARE. Funny thing is that people don't ever think it could happen to them. But one catastrophic illness can wipe out everything you have set aside to avoid being dependent on Social Security, and the only thing that keeps you from being dropped by your insurance carrier is the provisions in "Obamacare." Are you going to be singing the same tune if that happens to you?
