there are programs where you can get them for free. and there are also pre-paid ones, refurbished ones....cell phones can cost next to nothing to have, that's a bad source of justification.

eta: when i was homeless at 16, i had a cell phone that was refurbished and pre-paid. 10 bucks a month.

Walk through any public school in a rich or poor district. These kids all have cells. In Milwaukee they use them to get reinforcements when there is a fight in the school.

Maybe they should spend 'their' money feeding their kids. We all have priorities. This should be number one, but all so often it isn't. It's to easy to rely on others.

What if the parents are useless ne'er do wells who only don't kick their kids out into the street because the cops might bust them? Should those kids go hungry?

slvemike4u -> RE: Chicago Scools Banning Lunches from Home (4/11/2011 3:24:49 PM)

Well damm Ken,if the parents don't have their priorities right.........

ChatteParfaitt -> RE: Chicago Scools Banning Lunches from Home (4/11/2011 3:34:20 PM)

The huge majority of kids in the Chgo public school system do not pay full price for lunch. Most pay nothing. Many get both breakfast and lunch for free. The whys and wherefores of this opens up a whole societal can of worms, and is (perhaps) fodder for another thread.

IMO there is not way to legislate good parenting. There is only education, which if it is aggressive enough, will lead to institutionalizing the idea that good parenting should be a priority.

Now we have crack babies with cell phones and a fricked up lunch.

servantforuse -> RE: Chicago Scools Banning Lunches from Home (4/11/2011 3:36:38 PM)

Are there some kids that need a school lunch, certainly. Are there just as many just feeding off the taxpayer trough, literally, yes there are. Most of these parents are just to damn lazy to fix the kids a lunch.

ChatteParfaitt -> RE: Chicago Scools Banning Lunches from Home (4/11/2011 3:41:29 PM)

By the age of ten both my kids knew how to make their own lunch.

You are correct, all kinds of people feed off the government teat, this isn't news. Mandating what my kids should have for lunch is, especially when I know from experience how unhealthy and just downright nasty a chgo school lunch can be.

I wonder what could possibly make someone so callous.

servantforuse -> RE: Chicago Scools Banning Lunches from Home (4/11/2011 5:08:13 PM)

What is callous about wanting the kids that need it get it, but leave the rest of them off the 'free' program. Schools scramble to sign kids up. They make a profit on every lunch they serve.

~fast reply~

I am a food services manager at an elementary school. While I disagree with the "banning" of meals from home, I would imagine it is a response to many children who come in with a bag of chips and a coke. I would imagine this won't last, or if it does, they will lose all government reimbursements.

It is frustrating. Many of the ones who bring such lunches are already approved for free or reduced lunch.

We have a helluva good lunch program. Fresh fruits and veggies available, all "desserts" are fruit based.

We do get a few bucks from the federal and state for every meal served to a student. I can assure you it aint much. It is a challenge to manage to offer healthy foods that the kids will actually eat, but we do a good job of it.

What was the topic again?

The only ones I scramble to get signed up are the ones who come to school hungry and pityful. Hunger is a lot more common in the good old USA than most realize.

i will continue to scramble to do it too. And I am thankful the school lunch program is there for kids who can't help it they are poor.

So now,in addition to the welfare mother driving the pink Cadillac convertible, the woman who get pregnant just to take advantage of "free abortions"...you have added the vision of parasitic children, enriching themselves at the "taxpayer trough"one free lunch at a time ?
I can not help but ask....how do you stomach being in the same room with yourself ?

I am sure you folks "do a good job of it".Not only is it necessary work, but in some cases it is downright imperative.
You should be good and proud of the work you do and the service you provide,it must be rewarding to go to sleep at night knowing that there are, thanks to the efforts of programs like yours, fewer children going to sleep while suffering from debilitating hunger.
Thank you.[:)]

How much do your taxes have to go up before you start to question where some of this money is going. Not everyone getting a school lunch needs one.

JstAnotherSub -> RE: Chicago Scools Banning Lunches from Home (4/11/2011 5:41:15 PM)

Thanks. I really do love my job. At least in the area that I work in, it really makes a difference in many kids lives.

I've been doing it long enough to have one of my "babies" be my waitress at a bar. Ugh.

But she told me that some days the smile I gave her was the only one she got. I cried. I fukn hate my sensitive side!

Lucylastic -> RE: Chicago Scools Banning Lunches from Home (4/11/2011 5:42:48 PM)

and you are qualified to say that because what????
lets have some proof

Indeed, no point helping kids eat some decent food, when we can spend more on nuclear missiles and stuff.

Fucking right. Better to let a hundred hungry kids starve than spend my tax money feeding some lazy little cunt whose parents own a television set.

Start to question? Have you been paying attention....a lot of us are ,and have been ,questioning...we are wondering why the fuck the defense budget is so damm far and gone.We are wondering why executives at defense industries need multiple private jets.
See servant we are not that different you and I ,we both have questions about the budget and where the money is going....of course you are concerned that some runny nose kid might be eating too good.....and I am a little curious as to why my elected officials are eating fancy meals with the Defense Contractor.
