Were forgetting about the OP here. Some responsible parents who want to send their kids to school with a lunch are being told they can no longer do that. It is now up to the government to feed these kids lunch. This is a huge waste of money. This is the job of parents, not the federal government.

Let me be honest here,I know nothing of this school district, nothing of this Principals school...but I can read between the lines, and I can assume that perhaps, maybe, possibly this principal has identified a need of the children in her care....and decided to do her dammdest best in fulfilling that need.
Now that is admittably my knee jerk reaction to the story....your knee jerk reaction is that there are some kids unnecessarily feeding at the public trough.
All I can say is thank god I'm not you....how very sad it must be to be you.

Thanks. I really do love my job. At least in the area that I work in, it really makes a difference in many kids lives.

I've been doing it long enough to have one of my "babies" be my waitress at a bar. Ugh.

But she told me that some days the smile I gave her was the only one she got. I cried. I fukn hate my sensitive side!
Funny thing is I loved hearing about your sensitive side....aint that a bitch [:)]

My take on this story is this. I don't want the Federal government telling me what I have to feed my kids for lunch everyday.

From what the article said, that is exactly what is happening. So not only do the parents have to pay for the lunch, but their kid isn't getting anything. So the kids comes home from school starving and fills up on junk so he isn't hungry when dinner is ready. I guess knowing anything about kids isn't a requirement to work at that school.

Oh, don't back-peddle.

Has the Federal Gov't told you any such thing?Nah,I didn't think so....I'll make a deal with you servant, were the parents of the children that attend that principals school...to voice complaints, were they to demonstrably show that they are being responsible parents and that this functionary is trampling on their rights and responsibilities as caring parents....I will join you in screaming bloody murder.
Failing that, this is just one more opportunity for you to point a finger at over reaching gov't intrusion in to citizens lives....irrespective of the fact that this is,in all probability, simply an educator who is trying her/his dammdest to do what is best for the children in her charge.
The fact that you need run a few children over to score another point here is just so much collateral damage heh servant?

There is a school of thought that if you send your children to the village(government run school), thereby abdicating your right and responsibility to educate your children, you abdicate your right to decide how the village feeds them while there.

It is all about choice. Every parent has the choice of how and where their children are educated. If you turn that responsibility over to the government, you get exactly what you asked for.

servantforuse -> RE: Chicago Scools Banning Lunches from Home (4/11/2011 6:38:00 PM)

I'm not back peddling at all. I'm just going back to the OP. If kids need a lunch at school (as I've said before) they should get one. Those that can pay for lunch, or just plain don't want it, should not have the federal government standing in their way.

Yeah. Being honest enough to face up to the fact that some parents are too lazy to make a lunch for the young'uns, or would rather buy drugs than food.

How dare he! Only the politically correct ugly realities should have any place in an emotion based discussion of vital government services!

You mean like this guy "Some of the kids don't like the food they give at our school for lunch or breakfast," said Little Village parent Erica Martinez. "So it would be a good idea if they could bring their lunch so they could at least eat something."

or this one "(My grandson) is really picky about what he eats," said Anna Torrez, who was picking up the boy from school. "I think they should be able to bring their lunch. Other schools let them. But at this school, they don't."

outhere69 -> RE: Chicago Scools Banning Lunches from Home (4/11/2011 6:50:06 PM)

Did any of you guys notice that the following from the article?

"Carmona said she created the policy six years ago after watching students bring "bottles of soda and flaming hot chips" on field trips for their lunch. Although she would not name any other schools that employ such practices, she said it was fairly common."

Notice how there's no mention of the federal government.

The school meals we had when I was a kid were just terrible.  The food came from cans for the most part.  Especially the spinach that looked like some mutated seaweed.

BTW, FDD, Kindles are nothing like iPads.  Trust me, I have a Kindle.

And in 90% of the cases, that is exactly what is happening, b/c Dad works, Mom works, everyone is so busy.....who is responsible for making sure kids eat right? It's easy to blame the mother, but a mother who has to work has way too many responsibilities, too little time, and is pulled in all directions. The more kids you have the worse that is and being a single mother -- worse again.

I suspect those decrying the cost of a lunch, if you were that single mother with 4 kids, you would so much less likely to be willing to play the blame game.

servantforuse -> RE: Chicago Scools Banning Lunches from Home (4/11/2011 6:58:48 PM)

Dad works, Mom works, but they are way to busy to pack a lunch for their kids in the morning. That is the problem. Now it is the taxpayers problem and the federal government will feed our kids.

Funny thing is I just read the same story...I'm thinking if I had clipped some quotes out of it they would have been different ones.
So the Principal has not been able to line up 100 % agreement on her plan....does that surprise you....does that in any way excuse servant for trying to raise the specter of children unnecessarily feeding at the public trough....yes his words,I didn't bother to do the whole quotey thing because what the fuck they are on page 2 of this thread.
Let the parents and the principal in conjunction with the school district trash this out...servant tried to use this story to indict free lunches in their entirety....going so far as to complain that one district in his area was now....*gasp* also serving the children breakfast, servant voiced his fear that dinner was next.
So if you found some of my responses to him a little harsh.....sorry he has only himself to blame. His idiocy turned this into a larger debate involving budgets and deficits...and children stealing his tax money.

How much do your taxes have to go up before you start to question where some of this money is going. Not everyone getting a school lunch needs one.

Yeah, they do.  Do you want to know why?  It's because they are children who aren't responsible for whether or not their parents lack of effort is at the base of it.  Since when should kids suffer for whatever the situation is at home?

As to the OP, I can't see lunches from home being banned entirely.  That's a pretty tall order unless things like kosher food and several selections that don't include common food allergies  (peanut, strawberry, fish, etc.) are served every day.  Trying to keep tabs on everything and everyone when it comes to food choices is going to make it hard to stay within the parameters.

SpiritedRadiance -> RE: Chicago Scools Banning Lunches from Home (4/11/2011 7:03:00 PM)

The question is, Do you know what the serve for lunch?

They dont adjust for kids allergies (nuts, onions, lactose intolerance)

They Are dripping with more grease and fat then that terrible bag of chips the kids brought. One Pizza lunch from our school had over 1000 calories, 370 of them from fat.

And a School lunch in our area is almost 5 dollars a meal. So for lunch and breakfast thats 10 dollars a day X180 days of school is 1800 for meals that are worse then what they would pack for lunch.
